Countdown to … publisher crisis?

August 24th, 2007
Author Kevin Melrose

After being felled last week by some sort of alien virus, I’m back for another installment of “Meanwhile,” our weekly tour of the comics blogosphere.

This week sees discussion of the current state of DC Comics, a new home for refugees of The Engine, the return of one of my favorite comics bloggers … and Batman’s opinion of punk music.

For all of that and more, read on.

They punish Supergirl fans, don’t they?

August 10th, 2007
Author Kevin Melrose

I had big plans for my first edition of “Meanwhile,” our weekly tour of the comics blogosphere. Big plans. New mini-features (featurettes?). New graphics. The works.

But then my Internet service provider struck, leaving me with an intermittent connection for the past three days. So, all of the bells and whistles will have to wait until next week.

Enough of my excuses, though. Let’s just dive into what’s making the rounds in the blogosphere, from the “new” Supergirl to a new arrival. (Congratulations, Dr. Scott!)

So long and thanks for all the fish

August 3rd, 2007
Author Stephanie Chan

“So sad that it should come to this. We tried to warn you all but oh dear?”

Sorry, I couldn’t stop singing…where’s that title paragraph…here we go…

The comic blogosphere seems to grow larger every day and just like comics, sometimes it’s pretty easy to get a little lost. “Meanwhile …” will act as your map, pointing out what interesting discussions are happening out there while you’re reading Blog@Newsarama.

Have you been paying attention to the last couple of Meanwhile titles?

“I’m moving through some changes, I’ll never be the same.”

“Regrets, I’ve had a few. But then again, too few to mention.”

and now “So long and thanks for all the fish.” I’ve left clues, but now it’s time to be frank.

I’m sad to say that I’m leaving Meanwhile. I know, I know. You’re saying, “Again?”. Yep, I’m leaving again, but this time I’m getting paid to do so. I’m leaving to help start a new site that’s set to pop up pretty soon. I’ll mainly be writing reviews, but I may have another column in me. I can’t let you know the name of the site yet, but I can give you a little hint. They also cover video games. Yeah, I know… that really narrows it down.

Anyway, on with the column. I’m sure JK will be by with some news about what’s going to happen to Meanwhile in the next few days.

Big and very cool changes are afoot here at Meanwhile (more on that next week), but not much is going on around the blogosphere. It seems everyone is reading some book that came out this week.

Couldn’t Wait For Something New and Yesterday I Thought of You

Some of these aren’t so new, but they’re worth a look anyway.

Also, a quick note to new blogs. It helps new readers to have a quick synopsis of what your blog is about somewhere on the main page. I notice a lot of blogs don’t have that. It doesn’t have to be long, just a sentence or two. Trust me, it helps.

Observing the process will change it.

June 26th, 2007
Author Shane Bailey

A few words about the process I use for writing “Meanwhile…” before we start. A behind the scenes look, if you will.

I start off with a list of blogs, now numbering close to 250, that you can find on my sidebar at Near-Mint Heroes. I then open each one up in the browser and go through each and every blog listed to see if there is anything interesting going on. For this version of “Meanwhile…” I came up with 84 links. That’s a little too many so I have to narrow it down further. Then I set down to write the little verbage around the links, find a lyric for the title, and put everything in some kind of order that probably only I understand anyway. After that I go to sleep, wake up in the morning, look the column over one more time (usually fix a few links that I forgot to close) and it’s finished.

Anyway, this is all leading up to the making this two-part “Meanwhile…” column and also asking for some audience participation. If you, the readers of Meanwhile, see any new blogs that might not be on my list, or any interesting posts during the week, please send them to shane at nearmintheroes dot org. I’ll be sure to mention you when I link to the blog or post. Thanks in advance and I’m looking forward to seeing what I’m missing each week.

Now on with the links.

I’ve really been enjoying blogging lately both here and on my own blog. There’s a lot of good stuff out there in the midst of all the controversy and arguing. All this yelling and screaming is just the same old thing all over again, both from the companies and the fans. Time heals all wounds, or they kill ya, either way you don’t have to worry about them for very long.

Did you notice the old blurb above? Yep we’re going back into the past since it’s Meanwhile’s one year anniversary here at B@N. To celebrate we’re taking a look back to the very first Meanwhile here at our spiffy Newsarama digs. We’ll examine what was big in the blogosphere last year as well as taking a look at what those blogs are up to now. Enjoy!

You paint a funny face like a chick.

I’m going to start this off with a post that really hit home as I’m getting ready for my wedding. See, Those Wednesday’s Benhatt is getting married too. He needs some help with his wedding gift to his wife and I thought it was worth giving him the top spot here at Meanwhile to see if anyone could help him. Don’t worry. He’s not asking for any kind of monetary donation. Take it away Benhatt.

She’s the best, she’s my center. And just saying this everyday doesn’t feel like enough. That does not mean, however, that I can afford a pair of diamond earrings.

And this is where you come in people out there in Internetland. See her last name is Chick (I shit you not) so guess what she collects? We have adorable yellow birds doing adorable things (like singing) and not so adorable things (like flipping the finger). So I had this idea: get as many drawings of a chick wearing a hat (just go with it) as possible. Print it out of nice paper, have it bound nicely and bam thoughtful present.

Here’s the problem: I can’t draw. Not worth a penny. So if you can draw— hell even if you can’t— and you feel like helping a guy out with a present send it to Thosewednesdays@gmail.com. I can’t pay you, but someday you can call on me for a favor…I don’t know.

I don’t care what else is going on in the picture if you feel inclined to make it elaborate. I mean it could be a monster chick in a hat destroying Tokyo. Just remember that I will be giving it to her on our wedding day so have some level of respect. Thanks to everyone who helps out in advance.”

So help the guy out will ya? I’ll try to finish drawing mine this weekend.

Now, on with the rest of the links.

Well, I got good news and bad news.

The good news is that I just got engaged to the woman I love this weekend.

The bad news is that because of that I didn’t really have that much time to work on Meanwhile. I still have the links, but the commentary had to be cut a little short. I’ll be back to normal next week (Maybe…I am planning a wedding after all.).
