WORLD OF HURTThe Thrill-Seekers – Episode 12: “…No One Can Touch Us!”

I’m still waiting for the boycott over that “Black preachers” line.  Ned Belmont’s hubris really got under my skin, and I really wanted the guy to pay for it.

Two additional bits of business that I was able to address in this strip were a) answering any lingering questions over whether “Pastor” was Isaiah Hurt’s nickname or an honorific, and b) I introduced the name for the inner city neighborhood of Pointe Blanc from which Pastor operates.  The D’Urville District was named for Blaxploitation film stalwart, D’Urville Martin.

WORLD OF HURTThe Thrill-Seekers – Episode 11: “A Minor Inconvenience”

This is another one of those rare strips where everything just seemed to come together.  Most of the time, I find myself agonizing over every detail, but this one flowed together well.  I thought the characterization came through strong, plot elements were addressed, and I even laid the foundation for future story elements that will be introduced soon in the arc. Even the wardrobe choices really worked for me.  Even though it’s in black and white, every time I look at Tuck’s tux, I see powder blue.

WORLD OF HURTThe Thrill-Seekers – Episode 10: “The Beautiful People”

Here’s our introduction to the villains of the piece: Charles Bouchier IV, Ned Belmont, and Alan “Tuck” Sherwood.

I had fun designing the three characters, although each was created on the fly.  Tuck is something of a cross between the Skipper from Gilligan’s Island and a young Ed McMahon.  Also, one of the characters seen in this strip will play a pivotal role in the next WORLD OF HURT story arc coming up in early 2010, which will be entitled The Black Fist.

WORLD OF HURTThe Thrill-Seekers – Episode 9: “The Cover Up”

I have no real insights to add to this week’s edition, except to say that it was a bear to cram everything I wanted, and needed, to say into this edition.  I also think I did a fairly solid job in establishing who Det. Haworth is, and where he’s coming from.

WORLD OF HURTThe Thrill-Seekers – Episode 8: “…And Make Mine Black!”

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Welcome to the eighth installment of WORLD OF HURT – The Internet’s #1 Blaxploitation Webcomic!

Sometimes things seem too good to be true.  In this case, I thought Pastor’s last line, and this strip’s punchline, was wholly original, but in the back of my mind it seemed somewhat familiar.  Later, my suspicions were confirmed when I watched Shaft’s Big Score again, and realized Richard Roundtree delivers a similar line.  Ah well, let’s just call it homage.

Hundreds of webcomics make their bones with humor,  but oddly enough, I was really nervous about inserting humor into the series.  As the series progressed, we would see more of Pastor’s brand of wise-ass humor, but at this stage, I was just getting comfortable with him.

I know it’s a big holiday, so get back to your family, friends and football.  Personally, I’m thankful that you dropped by, and I’ll see you next week.

WORLD OF HURT – “The Thrill-Seekers” Episode 7

WORLD OF HURTThe Thrill-Seekers – Episode 7: “Mourning”

This strip was an important one for me in the development of WORLD OF HURT.  My first inclination was to continue with more action, but I felt it was important to humanize Alicia Patterson, and tell a little something about her background.  My fiancee commented that it was this episode that really caused her to to start caring about the story on its own right, not just because it was something I had written.

I am proud of how Alicia’s mother came across.  She has a voice that feels genuine to me, because it is a voice I heard often in my youth in southwest Georgia.  However, to maintain the fidelity to the era, this was one of the few times I altered dialogue in a strip after it was posted.  In the first panel, Mrs. Patterson originally made a statement about “smart, Black girls,” but I later decided that a middle-aged Black woman from the South in the 1970s may not have been completely used to the term “Black,” so I changed it to “colored.”

Detective Andy Haworth, physically and in temperament, is based on WORLD OF HURT’s resident tech guru of the same name.  Andy was instrumental in getting my site going.  He did it out of love for the genre, and didn’t ask for compensation.  However, in his honor, I said I would include Andy as a character in WORLD OF HURT.  Appropriately, he’s about the only person that Pastor can trust.

I hope to see you again on Thursday, but remember that new episodes of WORLD OF HURT – The Internet’s #1 Blaxploitation Webcomic are posted every Wednesday at www.worldofhurtonline.com.

WORLD OF HURT – “The Thrill-Seekers” Episode 6

(Click the image above for a larger version of the strip.)

WORLD OF HURTThe Thrill-Seekers – Episode 6: “Calling One In”

For the longest time, this was my favorite strip.  I even put it on the back of my business card, with re-worked dialogue.

Here we get to see one way in which Pastor cashes in the favors that are owed him.  Also, this is my first opportunity to really expand on the world in which Pastor operates.  I had the idea that Pastor may have a connection inside a Nation of Islam-esque organization.  Detoxing junkies was one of the community services the Nation Of Islam engaged in during the 1960s and 1970s.  (They may still do it.  I’m not sure.)  I wanted Pastor to come across as familiar with them by use of the traditional Islamic greeting, but his use of Brother Omar’s birth name suggests a certain casual dismissiveness, too.  If space had allowed, he was going to be a lot MORE harsh, because I wanted to include dialogue to the effect of “Keep him under wraps.  I don’t wanna find him on the corner sellin’ bean pies!”  See, now I’m really gonna get in trouble…

Incidentally, I completed this strip faster than any other, because I was heading to Houston to celebrate my brother’s birthday, and I was determined not to miss my deadline.

WORLD OF HURT – “The Thrill-Seekers” Episode 5

(Click the image above for a larger version of the strip.)

WORLD OF HURTThe Thrill-Seekers – Episode 5: “Confession Is Good For The Soul, Bad For The Jaw”

In this strip, I think I finally started to gain my footing.  It’s a poor artist who blames his tools, but it’s an even poorer artist who keeps using cheap tools.  I started using a real Red Sable Kolinsky #2 brush, instead of brushes with cheaper synthetic fibers, so I think the lines came out much smoother and more controlled.  I wasn’t super happy with the car, but I was pleased with the flame effects.  If I had the chance, I would re-draw that last panel.  Pastor’s nose drives me crazy in that one.

As far as the writing and art goes, early on I realized I had to trust the audience to make the closure with what is occurring.  As to the fate of Alicia Patterson, I believe what is implied is much more powerful than what is stated, or drawn, because I rely on the imagination, and dare I say, complicity of the reader to generate that closure of events.

A new Buffy motion comic on the horizon?

November 16th, 2009
Author David Pepose

For those of you still smarting over the news of Dollhouse’s cancellation, this may be a (slight) silver lining for you.

Sci Fi Wire has posted a casting call for what seems to be an online Buffy the Vampire Slayer Motion Comic, produced by MAXX INITIATIVE, and based on the Season Eight comic by Dark Horse. Here’s just a snippet:

[ FAITH (V.O.) ]
Co-Star / Female / Caucasian / 20 – 25 years
Description: MAXX INITIATIVE is now casting voice over talent for the Buffy the Vampire Motion Comic, upcoming web series. Seeking the role of FAITH – female, early 20′s, a slayer, displays a much darker, dangerously, fun-seeking, approach to both slaying and murder, she is the dark side of a slayer’s personality. Voice to match Eliza Dushku. Send voiceover links/ reels (if possible). Pay provided. Nonunion.

There’s no sign of Buffy anywhere in this casting call — although that may mean she’s already been cast. Interesting note, however, is there is a call for someone to match the voice of actor Daniel Craig. I don’t know what kind of role he might have, but that’s kinda cool.

AMC releases motion comic for The Prisoner

November 12th, 2009
Author David Pepose

You excited for this weekend’s premiere of the AMC remake of the Prisoner, with James Caviezel and Sir Ian McKellen?

Well, if you’re truly jonesing to jump back to the Village, AMC has something for you — a motion comic preceding the series, written by M. Scott Veach, and art by Mitch Breitweiser.

In a lot of ways, it looks like a ton of work — but boy does it pay off. Using different drawings on a static background as opposed to moving one stationary image, this may very well be one of the better motion comics I’ve seen, and that’s without music and voiceovers.

The first chapter — totally free, mind you — is up on AMC’s web site.

UPDATE: Whew, a little hasty with my trigger finger there — Warren Ellis rightly notes the credits, which I somehow missed. Thanks for the heads-up!

WORLD OF HURTThe Thrill-Seekers – Episode 4: “See, What Had Happened Was…”

Welcome back, Blog@teers!

I enjoy posting these strips and seeing how my work has (hopefully) evolved since the first time I drew these strips.  I absolutely hated this strip the first time around, and it almost caused me to hang up my hat only a month into the series.  Whatever I was trying to achieve, I didn’t feel like I was reaching it.  Looking back, I think this episode was fairly solid, and it is one of the most pivotal moments in The Thrill-Seekers (Although there is one bit of dialogue that I would change).

In this episode, I establish early in the story arc’s run, what Alicia Patterson’s ultimate, tragic fate is.  It is this knowledge, and desire for revenge on her behalf, that drives all of Pastor’s actions for the rest of this storyline.

Thanks again for checking in, and I invite you to visit www.WorldOfHurtOnline.com every Wednesday for the latest episodes of The Internet’s #1 Blaxploitation Webcomic!

Also, feel free to weigh in.  I’m eager to hear your opinions, critiques, or suggestions.

Thanks!

WORLD OF HURTThe Thrill-Seekers Episode 3: “Never Volunteer Information”

This was the first time the readers got a good look at Pastor, so I wanted to make it big and memorable.  The great Al Williamson (“Secret Agent Corrigan”) excelled at creating evocative close-ups in his strips.  I was really trying to ape Al Williamson’s approach to rendering here, but I’ll leave it up to you to determine if that was successful.  Also, I was unhappy with the way I initially drew and inked the face.  I don’t know if you can tell from the scan, but, in the first panel, the area between the bridge of Pastor’s nose to his bottom lip is a paste-up job of cut-out Bristol board over the original inks on vellum.  Hopefully, my fellow process junkies out there find that kinda interesting.

SUGGESTED FOR MATURE READERS

Welcome back, Blog@teers!

When I started WORLD OF HURT, I wrestled with the issue of how much fidelity I would have to the Blaxploitation films that inspired it.  In general, they were rather lurid and profane.  I wanted to stay true to my “creative muse,” but I also wanted my Mom to be comfortable reading it.  This may make me a terrible son, but in the end, the muse won out.  However, I did warn my mother beforehand that the language was somewhat salty.  (The first strip ran in April, but by July she had worked up the nerve to stop by the site.)

Nonetheless, I did work out a compromise with myself.  The only word that is off limits is the N-word.  I want to bury it forever, so even in the name of artistic license, I refused to give it validity or currency in my webcomic.

Hello Blog@teers!

Welcome to the lastest webcomic addition to Blog@Newsarama, WORLD OF HURT – The Internet’s #1 Blaxploitation Webcomic! This is the first episode of The Thrill-Seekers, WORLD OF HURT‘s first story arc.  WORLD OF HURT is updated weekly, and the most recent adventures may be found at my website, www.WorldOfHurtOnline.com.

What is WORLD OF HURT? It is a black and white serial adventure webcomic inspired by the Black action movies of the 1970s and the classic newspaper adventure strips.  WORLD OF HURT focuses more on Blaxploitation’s potential for raw, urban crime stories and drama than the campier aspects of the film movement.  It follows the exploits of a Black trouble-shooter named Isaiah “Pastor” Hurt as he dispenses street justice in the city of Pointe Blanc.  The Thrill-Seekers involves Pastor’s investigation into the disappearance of a young co-ed named Alicia Patterson.

It is a distinct honor to be join the Blog@Newsarama family.  I will be posting strips every Tuesday and Thursday.  I hope you return, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Introducing… WORLD OF HURT

October 29th, 2009
Author David Pepose

Greetings, Blog@teers — have we got some news for you!

For the past six months, a webcomic has been featured by Ain’t It Cool News and CNN, celebrated for its action, characterization, and respect for the blaxploitation films that inspired it. As its creator notes, it’s Super Fly meets The Equalizer, the step-child of Shaft and Rip Kirby, a love letter to the Black action films of the 1970s. For some, it’s street justice like you’ve never seen — and for those on the run, well, all that’s coming their way is a WORLD OF HURT.

And in keeping with our mission to deliver the best and the brightest to you, our readers, we are proud to announce that WORLD OF HURT will be making its second home at Blog@Newsarama, as the latest in our weekly webcomics series. We sat down with writer/artists Jay Potts about the comic, his blaxploitation inspirations, and what the future holds for Isaiah “Pastor” Hurt.

Newsarama: Jay, just to start out with, can you tell new readers a little bit about what World of Hurt is about?

Jay Potts: WORLD OF HURT is a weekly, black & white serial adventure webcomic that is my personal love letter to the Black action films of the 1970s and the Golden Age of newspaper adventure strips.  It is set in the early1970s in the city of Pointe Blanc, a fictional version of San Francisco and Oakland, and follows the exploits of a Black troubleshooter named Isaiah “Pastor” Hurt.

Nrama: In terms of getting to know you a little bit — what’s your background been in terms of comics? Is World of Hurt your first one, or have you been building up this?

Potts: I’ve been drawing since the age of four and have been a comic book fan for just as long.  However, it wasn’t until I entered the graduate program in Sequential Art at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA in 1997, that I received any formal instruction.  What I learned there about storytelling and composition, and the exposure to an incredible range of talent, was truly eye-opening.

Review: Achewood Vol. 2: Worst Song, Played on Ugliest Guitar

September 6th, 2009
Author J. Caleb Mozzocco

As a comics critic, I hate Chris Onstad’s Achewood. As a comics reader, I love it—it’s by far my favorite web comic, and one of my favorite comic strips or comics of any kind…hell, maybe one of my favorite pieces of current fiction of any medium.

The reason part of me hates it and part of me loves it is the same. It’s such a unique strip, there’s nothing really even remotely like it, which, obviously, can make it really hard to explain to others, or talk about at all.

There are a lot of conceptual hurdles that can make entry into the world of Achewood kind of hard, hurdles I struggled with the first few times I tried reading it, until someone eventually advised to just pick a story arc from the archives and start reading—within a dozen or so strips, you should start to not only get it, but dig it. And Onstad is so accomplished at world building that the longer the strip goes on, the more you read of it, the more you get to know the surprisingly dynamic and versatile characters, the better it gets.

Those hurdles? Who are all these crazy anthropomorphic animals, and what species are they exactly? Are they anthropomorphic animals living in an animal-scaled world, or a human-scaled world? Why don’t squirrels have pupils? How is it that four such divergent characters as Mr. Cornelius Bear, Lyle, Teodor and Phillipe are roommates?

Achewood Vol. 2: Worst Song, Played on Ugliest Guitar (Dark Horse Comics) is the book that the Caleb who once struggled with such things could have used to answer such questions.

On the Zuda Comic Viewer

September 2nd, 2009
Author Sarah Jaffe

Via Comics Worth Reading, I found this post by Sean Kleefeld on the technological setup of Zuda comics. Being a bit of a media nerd, I read with interest and have some comments of my own.

Kleefeld starts off with a critique of browser compatibility, which hasn’t been a problem for me with Zuda (I use Flock, a Firefox-based browser) but his thoughts on Flash and “push” vs. “pull” models I think have some relevance on a wider scale.

He says:

See, there’s a larger problem with using Flash to deliver web comics, beyond iPhone users not being able to partake of the content. The model Zuda is using is what you would call a “pull” — Zuda is actively trying to pull readers to their site on a regular, recurring basis to read their comics. They have to reach out to users, get their attention, and convince them to click over to their site.

Many (I daresay “most”) webcomics these days instead opt for a “push” model. That is, they push their content out to the user via some form of syndication (RSS, XML, etc.) and the reader can view the content on a device and format of their choosing. Maybe it’s through a feed reader, maybe it’s through a customized iPhone app, maybe it’s part of a portal set-up someone created, maybe something else altogether. The point is that people can move the content around quickly and easily.

This seems to me to be symptomatic of the comics industry at large and its attitude toward new readers. Comic shops are wonderful things, but they are often not welcoming to the casual viewer (I know plenty of notable exceptions) and more importantly, many people never set foot in a comic shop–because why would they? They don’t read comics.

With the Web, and with “push” models like Kleefeld describes, comics have an excellent opportunity to reach out to people who wouldn’t set foot in a comic shop–and wouldn’t go looking for Zuda comics. If you could embed, move, link to individual pages, and other features that he mentions in the post, there would be many more opportunities to attract new eyeballs to the comics.

The problem is that viewers on one site are easy to calculate and easy therefore to charge advertisers for or to monetize. Embeddable video is not easy to monetize. Yet the media environment we are in, as many, many theorists have noted, is increasingly one where the price point is “free” and whether we like it or not, we have to think about different ways to support art and artists than the advertising-and-paid-content models we’re used to. (For some interesting thoughts on monetizing new media, check this post out.)

Thursday Linkblogging

August 13th, 2009
Author Sarah Jaffe

It’s Thursday. I have had too much caffeine and haven’t bought my comics for the week yet. Have some links.

Boondock Saints comics? Hell yes.

Becky Cloonan‘s ongoing webcomic-saga of her “feud” with Amy Reeder Hadley just keeps getting funnier.

Warren Ellis thinks you should buy this print from Laurenn McCubbin. I think you should buy it for me.

One of my favorite political bloggers, Spencer Ackerman, is now the star of a comic book. Where the heck is MY comic book, people?

Jonathan Lethem on the “Squandered promise of science fiction.”
