The CW Producing Zombie Show Called “THE AWAKENING” But…

January 28th, 2011
Author Lucas Siegel

Entertainment Weekly reports that teen-themed network The CW is pursuing a new zombie show to ride the success of AMC’s “The Walking Dead.” The show will feature “two sisters who face off…right as the zombie apocalypse” begins.

The interesting thing to us comic book fans, though, is the title of this zombie story, “The Awakening.”

That’s interesting, as “The Awakening” is already the title of a zombie story, the two-volume comic book from Archaia [read the first issue here]. There is no mention of the comic in EW’s news blurb, and the two don’t appear to share any story similarities aside from the presence of zombies, but this still seems odd; you’d think the first thing a studio would do before announcing the name of a new show would be a simple google search of “The Awakening zombies”.

So, will Archaia be pursuing a name-change from The CW? We’ve asked, and we’ll fill you in as soon as we get any response.

Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome casts its Adama

January 27th, 2011
Author Jill Pantozzi

We’ve seen old William Adama and young William Adama, now it’s time to unveil twenty-something Adama! Syfy has announced the casting of 22-year-old Luke Pasqualino for their next Battlestar Galatica prequel series, Blood & Chrome.

Here’s his character bio as revealed on Entertainment Weekly’s website:

Pasqualino will star as the young, talented fighter pilot William Adama, a recent Academy graduate who finds himself assigned to the newest Battlestar in the Colonial fleet: the Galactica. Full of ambition and in pursuit of the intense action that the Cylon war promises, Adama quickly finds himself at odds with Coker (Cotton), the battle-weary officer to whom he reports. With 45 days left in his tour of duty, Coker desires an end to battle just as much as Adama craves the start of it. Though they clash at first, the two men forge an unlikely bond when a routine mission turns dangerous and becomes a pivotal one for the desperate fleet.

As you can see, EW also announced the casting of Ben Cotton (Stargate: Atlantis) as Adama’s commanding officer. Cotton previously held the role of Atreus in Syfy’s short-lived BSG prequel series Capria and an even smaller role in the TV movie, Battlestar Galactica: RazorPasqualino has had a short career thus far but is best known for his role as Freddie on BBC’s Skins.

Executive produced and written by longtime BSG companions David Eick and Glen A. Larson respectively, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome will premiere as a tw0-hour pilot on Syfy.

McG ‘Odds-On Favorite’ to Direct WONDER WOMAN Pilot

January 25th, 2011
Author Albert Ching

In a move surely to inspire decidedly mixed reaction, McG, the director of Charlie’s Angels and Terminator Salvation, is the “odds-on favorite” to direct the pilot of David E. Kelley’s Wonder Woman series, says Michael Ausiello.

Let’s look at this reasonably. Yeah, a lot of people didn’t like his Terminator movie (though surely someone liked it… right?), but as far as his work in TV goes, he directed the pilot of Chuck as well, and that turned out pretty well. He’s a producer on another series adaptation of a DC comic — Human Target — and clearly has experience with female characters and independent women. McG — born Joseph McGinty Nichol — also co-wrote the song “Fly” by Sugar Ray, and though I’m not sure if that translates positively or negatively to potential ability to direct a Wonder Woman pilot, it’s at least worth noting, right?

Smallville about to get a “boost”: Eric Martsolf to guest star as Booster Gold.

January 23rd, 2011
Author Lan Pitts

Get ready for gold…Booster Gold.

Earlier this week, both KryptonSite and popular soap site Soaps.com reported and confirmed that soap star Eric Martsolf (Days Of Our Lives) will take up the role of everybody’s futuristic hero/showboat, Booster Gold. The episode, appropriately called “Booster”, is written by DC’s CCO, Geoff Johns, and directed by Tom Welling.

It’s also been confirmed that Jaime Reyes, the current Blue Beetle, will appear in the episode as well, played by actor Jaren Brandt Bartlett. As for what else there is to expect from the episode, Johns says we’ll see Blue Beetle’s origin, Booster’s first meeting with Clark and Lois, and “maybe a cameo by someone from Kord Industries.” After that tease, it was revealed that Ted Kord (Blue Beetle II) will be in the episode in some way, played by Sebastian Spence

Please and thank you.

NBC Picks Up David E. Kelley’s WONDER WOMAN After All

January 21st, 2011
Author Albert Ching

Freaky Friday? After widespread reports earlier this month that NBC passed on David E. Kelley’s Wonder Woman adaptation, Deadline reported late Friday that the network has indeed ordered a pilot. It’s among several pick ups made today by Bob Greenblatt, the network’s new head of entertainment. (more…)

In the vein of comic creators Art Spiegleman, Alan Moore, and Daniel Clowes, comic writer and contemporary literary legend, Neil Gaiman, will voice himself on The Simpsons in an upcoming episode.

Wonder Woman tv show put on hold…for now

January 8th, 2011
Author Lan Pitts

Looks like the David E. Kelley planned Wonder Woman tv series is “not moving forward”, reports Entertainment Weekly. Apparently, their sources told them that all the major broadcasters have passed on the project. NBC was the final network that declined to bring back the super heroine. Of course, Warner Bros. TV has said they are not giving up on this, but it is definitely on hold.

Outside of her appearing on DC animated’s Justice League franchise, Wonder Woman has not appeared in live action since the 1976-1979 series starring Lynda Carter and Lyle Waggoner as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince and Steve Trevor, respectively.

I just don’t get this. Smallville ends in a few months and this would have been the perfect heir. With Batman: The Brave and the Bold on the air, with a Green Lantern animated series coming soon as well, I’d gladly settle for a Wondy animated series at this point.

December 17th, 2010
Author Albert Ching

In case you missed it among the other big Brian Michael Bendis-centric news of the day, Variety reported early Friday morning that Melissa Rosenberg, the screenwriter who adapted all of the Twilight movies for film, is developing a TV series version of Alias for ABC — titled “AKA Jessica Jones” — with an aim towards getting in on the schedule for fall 2011.

Candace Bailey Is the New Permanent Co-Host of ATTACK OF THE SHOW

December 6th, 2010
Author Albert Ching

Way back in July, we wondered when G4 was finally going to announce what was obvious to everyone else: that Olivia Munn was done with Attack of the Show, as the show kept the newly minuted Daily Show correspondent in the intro, on-set graphics and website long after she had last appeared on the show.

Well, it looks like that day is today! Not only has Munn been dropped from all that jazz, the show has announced a new co-host, starting January 11, 2011: Candace Bailey.

Frank Darabont Cuts WALKING DEAD Writing Staff

December 1st, 2010
Author Albert Ching

Well, this is surprising to read: Deadline.com reports that Frank Darabont, writer/director/executive producer of AMC’s The Walking Dead adaptation, has let go of the season one writing staff, and is considering going all-freelance writers for the show’s 13-episode second season.

Given that the show has been a commercial and critical success at this point — breaking ratings records for AMC and being dubbed “the best new show on TV” on the cover of last week’s Entertainment Weekly — the news seems unexpected. As the Deadline article points out, writing staff changes between seasons is common, but total overhaul is rare, and foregoing a writing staff entirely is nearly unheard of in American TV (and, as Deadline points out, is something the Writer’s Guild may dispute).

Darabont wrote two episodes of The Walking Dead‘s six-episode season one and had a hand in re-writes with the other four, with comic book series creator Robert Kirkman writing one, and fellow freelancer Glen Mazarra responsible for another.

Sarah Wayne Callies talks about Lori Grimes

November 15th, 2010
Author Lan Pitts

AMC’s The Walking Dead, based on the renowned comic series of the same name, is getting a ton of press and rave reviews from all around. Recently, over at The Walking Dead blog, an interview was posted with Sarah Wayne Callies, the actress who portrays Lori Grimes. It gives a bit of insight into how she play Lori and how they get that oh-not-so-fresh look just right.

Q: When it was announced that you were playing Lori, did any fans of The Walking Dead comic approach you?

A: Actually, I was in a comic book store in Vancouver and I was looking through for the latest issue that had just come out and the owner of the comic book store came up to me and said, “I see you’re checking out The Walking Dead. It’s amazing.” I said, “Yeah, I’m a huge fan.” And he said, “You know they’re making a television show for AMC. It’s supposed to be really good.” I kind of looked at him and I froze. I just went, “I’ll keep an eye out for it.” And I ran out of the store. I mean, what kind of jerk goes, “Yeah, I’m playing Lori.”

Q: Do you do a lot of camping in your real life?

A: Yeah. The rite of passage of learning to build a fire that will burn all night with one match is not an insignificant one in my husband’s family, and I grew up camping and backpacking. I love to camp. I think I’m probably much better at the boots and pocket knife thing than I am at the high heels and martini thing. And thankfully, Lori is so comfortable with it. For all the parts of her that were work, that felt like home.

Q: How much time do you have to spend in make-up to–

A: To look that bad! I’ve had so many journalists who see this thing and go, “Don’t take this the wrong way but you look like s—.” It’s dirty out there. It’s hot. Most of the make-up revolves around sunscreen. They paint dark circles under my eyes. This is not a show that is particularly amenable to vanity.

Q: Lori took her family photo albums when she had to leave town. What would you take if walkers were invading?

A: I’ve got a go bag. It’s a backpack that’s ready in the closet at all times for whatever. So that’s all packed.

Tony Millionaire Illustrates Elvis Costello’s New Album, Gets on LATE NIGHT

November 8th, 2010
Author Albert Ching

Maakies cartoonist Tony Millionaire has illustrated another Elvis Costello album cover, for the music industry legend’s latest record, National Ransom, which hit stores last week. His art got some network TV exposure this past Friday night on NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, when the LP cover was shown off several times during the Costello interview segment.

Millionaire also provided art for Costello’s previous album, 2009′s Secret, Profane and Sugarcane. His latest Maakies collection, Little Maakies on the Prairie, is out imminently through Fantagraphics. Indie comic books got some pretty good exposure on Fallon a couple of months ago, when Rashida Jones talked up Frenemy of the State on the chat show.

Take a closer look at the National Ransom cover after the jump.

WALKING DEAD Debuts With Huge Ratings For AMC

November 1st, 2010
Author Albert Ching

Well, looks like that massive marketing campaign for the Frank Darabont-helmed adapatation of Image’s The Walking Dead paid off pretty well: Deadline.com is reporting that last night’s series premiere, shrewdly broadcast on Halloween night, attracted 5.3 million viewers, “the largest audience for an original series on AMC.”

That number also includes 3.6 million in the always desirable 18-49 demographic. So though rumors that the series had already been greenlit for a second season were dashed a couple of months ago, it seems sorta totally likely at this point.

For all of Newsarama coverage on The Walking Dead, both the comic and the TV series (and including a two-part interview with creator Robert Kirkman), amble over here.

LEGENDS OF THE SUPERHEROES Gets Legitimate DVD Release — What’s Next?

October 22nd, 2010

After 31 years, Legends of the Superheroes is now legally, commercially available on DVD (Newsarama even has an exclusive clip right here)— just two months after we detailed the very odd pair of farcical TV specials right here on this very blog.

Coincidence? Well, yes.

Are “Lost” producers working on Fables for ABC?

October 13th, 2010
Author Lan Pitts

Over at Entertainment Weekly, the Ausiello Files have uncovered a “super secret” project that sounds all too familiar:

“former Lost executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are developing a fairy-tale-themed drama series. Oh, and they’re getting a little help from—stop me if you’ve heard of this guy—Damon Freakin’ Lindelof!”

Because in December of 2008, it was mentioned that Vertigo’s Fables would be adapted for television at ABC (after an initial fly-by at NBC). Now, we haven’t heard much come from the project, until possibly now. The only question is, is this the proposed Fables adaption, or something in the same vein of the beloved comic series?

I’d like to think it is (perusing the message boards of the story, I’m not the only one). Especially with the notion that he will have a female lead. So is this Fables? Magic 8-ball says “all signs point to yes”. While Ausiello instantly calls for Sarah Michelle Gellar, I don’t simply see her as Snow White…Rose Red, on the other hand…

So, readers, who would you like to see in the cast of TV’s Fables? And do you think it could have a shot at massive popularity?

Laura Vandervoort returns as Supergirl to “Smallville”

October 1st, 2010
Author Lan Pitts

Something’s missing. Can’t put my finger on it…

Laura Vandervoort as Kara this season and she’s bringing a somewhat familiar look in the properly-titled episode: Supergirl. Kara brings Clark some not-so-welcomed news.

You know, I wasn’t too keen on the idea of Supergirl coming on board, but Vandervoort really makes the outfit work. I’ve always thought she carried the role quite well and I’m so ready for the rest of this season.

Wonder Woman headed to small screen once again

October 1st, 2010
Author Lan Pitts

Well it’s about time.

David E. Kelley (creator of such hits as Ally McBeal and several other TV favorites) is writing and producing a new show centering around DC’s Wonder Woman, Deadline reports. This project is presumed to fill the void once Smallville ends this season, so it’s up in the air as of now if this is a show about Wonder Woman, or Diana, the Amazonian Princess.

With the live-action movie constantly in developmental hell, and the animated movie being quite the success (even outselling Green Lantern: First Flight) a TV show would be the perfect fit for fans of the character to get that fix.

I think Kelley has the creative know-how that could bring this show to a broad audience. We haven’t seen live-action Wondy since the 70′s with the famous Lynda Carter TV show that a lot of us grew up on.

So, readers, what do you think of a Wonder Woman show? Could this be another Smallville, or another Mercy Reef?

We have lift off on Smallville

September 23rd, 2010
Author Lan Pitts

For years they’ve teased it. He once did it unknowingly. He was once scared and confused when he floated in the early seasons. In the premiere episode “Lazarus”, we see Clark Kent realize his potential and, well, just take a look.

So, who else is even more excited for tomorrow night’s season premiere?
