Can’t Wait for Wednesday

May 22nd, 2007
Author Kevin Melrose

If it’s Tuesday, that must mean Chris Mautner and I are back for another look at the titles scheduled to appear this week at a comics store near you.

With Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer just a few weeks away, Marvel boosts the profile of the herald of Galactus with the Silver Surfer Omnibus, Vol. 1, hardcover, Marvel Spotlight: Fantastic Four, and a guest appearance in Fantastic Four #546.

At Image, Casanova and Fell get the hardcover treatment, while at DC the big story’s still Countdown, which ticks down to Issue 49.

As always, let us know your choices in the comments below.

Is it Tuesday again already? If so, that means Chris Mautner and I return for another crack at the titles set to appear this week in a comics store near you.

The “big” releases this week aren’t the kickoff of the next big event. Instead, they’re the long-awaited — and I mean long-awaited – continuation of Frank Miller and Jim Lee’s All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder and the conclusion of Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s The Ultimates 2. There’s a little more on those titles after the jump.

Also at DC, the Minx line of graphic novels for teen girls launches with Cecil Castellucci and Jim Rugg’s The Plain Janes, while Marvel marches on with its Civil War tie-in collections.

Meanwhile, the KISS Nation braces for the release of the KISS 4K Destroyer Edition #1, which at 2 1/2 feet tall by 1 1/2 wide, apparently is the largest comic book ever published. Evarrrrr. So says Guinness.

Me, I just want to see the KISS Nation take on the Naruto Nation. That would be the fight of the century!

It’s Tuesday afternoon, which means Chris Mautner and I return for another crack at the titles set to appear this week in a comics store near you.

For superhero fans, the big comic this week again likely comes from DC, which kicks off Countdown, its year-long weekly series that spins out of the events of 52. At Marvel, it’s a week for collections and Gaiman and Romita Jr.’s Eternals gets the hardcover treatment, and we see trades for two Civil War tie-ins, Criminal, Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man and more.

Meanwhile, Dark Horse issues a new edition of Rod Espinosa’s The Courageous Princess, Pocket Books releases a new volume of Degrassi: Extra Credit, and at Image, Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie’s six-issue Phonogram comes to a close.

It’s Tuesday afternoon, which means Chris Mautner and I return for another crack at the titles set to appear this week in a comics store near you.

For fans of superhero stories, the big releases are likely 52 Week Fifty-Two, which brings to an end DC’s year-long maxiseries — do we still call them that? — and World War Hulk Prologue: World Breaker #1, which starts the windup to Marvel’s big summer event.

But there’s a little something for everyone, as Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo team up for Hellboy: Darkness Calls #1, Del Rey Manga releases the much-publicized Avril Lavigne’s Make 5 Wishes, and Top Shelf rolls out Christian Slade’s adorable-looking Korgi, Vol. 1.

Can’t Wait for Wednesday

April 24th, 2007
Author Kevin Melrose

After more than a year in its current form — it dates back to the days of The Great Curve — “Can’t Wait for Wednesday” undergoes a format change beginning with this week. Instead of the entire Blog@ crew making their picks of the week, Chris Mautner and I will wade through the Diamond shipping lists, singling out the titles we think are worth considering during your Wednesday pilgrimage.

And, as always, let us know your choices in the comments below.

It’s a solid week for us to take the reins as DC ends Firestorm the Nuclear Man and kicks off Amazons Attack, Marvel releases two more Civil War-related trades and collects the final Vaughan-Alphona issues of Runaways, AdHouse Books unleashes Johnny Hiro on Tokyo and the world, and Chris can finally get his hands on Micrographica from Top Shelf.

For our rundown of the books scheduled to appear this week in finer stores everywhere, just click “more.”

The weather is warming up where I am, but they say it won’t last. I’m going to sip on some iced tea and my comics outside while I can.

Speaking of comics, what does everyone hyped about this week?

JK Parkin’s Pick of the Week

My pick is the surreal Last Sane Cowboy & Other Stories, coming out from AiT/Planet Lar this week, which looks to be unlike anything else coming out this week … or next, and probably for many weeks to come.  Check out Daniel Merlin Goodbrey’s website for previews and other fun stuff

Happy Wednesday, everyone! I hope the Easter bunny was kind to you. That’s actually something I never really knew. Why does the Easter bunny hide candy? Does it matter if you’re naughty or nice? Do you have to put something under your pillow? I’m probably over-thinking this.

I had an anime-filled Easter holiday. When I went home for Easter, I raided my brother’s massive anime DVD collection and we had a four day anime-athon at my mom’s house. Azumanga Daioh was pretty hilarious, so I’m going to look for the Manga of that. And I forgot how good Strawberry Marshmallow is.

But enough reminiscing about the holidays, what are we getting our hands on this week?

Chris Mautner’s Pick of the Week

Definitely All-Star Superman is high up on my list, but there’s so many great stuff coming out this week that’s it’s tough to pick just one. New Death Note! New Dragon Head! Oh man, and I’m so jonsin’ for that Complete Universe of Dupuy & Bebarian book. I may blow my entire April comics budget this week.

Happy Wednesday! I hope you had a good week and weren’t a sucker to any April Fool’s gags. I fell for a couple myself. Friend of mine said it was his birthday. and then I was told that Chris Bachalo was fired from Marvel. I guess I’m just too trusting sometimes.

Well it’s time to see what everyone is excited about today!

Wayne Beamer’s Pick of the Week

Madman Atomic Comics #1: One of my favorite comics auteurs — Mike Allred — returns to his signature creation in a brand new Image series.

Spring is finally here! I got to enjoy some of great weather and read my comics outdoors this weekend. Sadly, my area has a winter storm warning. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. I just hope the storm doesn’t delay the comic shipment.

Stephanie Chan’s Pick of the Week

I want some fun reading to sit by the warm fire and drink hot chocolate with. It’s more of a graphic novel week for me this time around, so I’m picking up Tank Girl vol. 2 and 3. You know, I recently attended a comic jam (where you draw a panel of a comic for 15 minutes and then pass it to the next person) and I was surprised some of the guys there didn’t know who Tank Girl was! *shock and sadness*

I’m experiencing a bit of a late winter storm here. I hope that means the comics won’t be late for me. But through rain, snow, or shine, our bloggers are lining up to the shops for this week’s grabs.

Wayne Beamer’s Pick of the Week
This one didn’t appear on this week’s list because Diamond shipped it late, but I definitely believe it’s worth a mention here:

Cat Getting Out of a Bag and Other Observations by Jeffrey Brown (Chronicle Books $12.95)

I can’t think of a better way to explain and describe the charm of cats, especially to those who have merely subsisted in a “cat-free world,” than to hand them a copy of Jeffrey Brown’s latest wonderful book. My only disappointment about Brown’s great book: My wife and I thought our cats were the only ones who did those crazy and, surprisingly, very human things…

Good news! I don’t think any of the major news outlets are going to ruin any plots in this week’s comics. Judging from the entries submitted, looks like Dark Horse rules our picks this week. You’ll see what I mean.

Graeme McMillan’s Pick of the Week

Buffy! I’m happy enough to admit that I’m a massive fan of Joss Whedon’s writing, as well as of the series that made his name – Knowing that Joss will be followed on the title by Brian K. Vaughan and then Drew Goddard makes it much easier for me to jump on this bandwagon with glee.

If you haven’t checked out the major news outlests today, DON’T! Unless you don’t mind some little Marvel spoilers. If you want to spoil your brains out before hitting the shops, then Kevin has the links for you!

Carla Hewitt’s Pick of the Week
Civil War Inititive brings us the new status quo of the Marvel Universe and a brand new era for our heroes. Like it or not, you’re still anticipating it like the tik-tik-tik of the start of a really high rollercoaster. Also, when your title character is in jail, you know you have Brubaker on your hands! Captain America #25 is going to thrill and chill, without a doubt.

Well, Carla seems pretty excited about Cap. What about the rest of us?

Can’t Wait for Wednesday

February 28th, 2007
Author Stephanie Chan

I hope everyone that went out to the New York Comic Con had a lot of fun and got a lot of loot. I spent my weekend working overtime *mumble grumble*. At least it’s new comic day, so it’s time to sit back, relax, and enjoy our month’s end offerings!

Tom Bondurant’s Pick of the Week

Good to see new issues of Hero Squared, Green Lantern, and Action Comics, but my pick this week is Firestorm #33, the apparent beginning of the end of the cancelled series, barring a Manhunter-like reprieve. It gets what looks like a decent sendoff from writer Dwayne McDuffie, layout artist Dan Jurgens, penciller Ken Lashley, and inker Rob Stull, as Stormy meets Seven Soldiers’ Mister Miracle and the rest of the New Gods. Previous writers Dan Jolley and Stuart Moore (with artists Chriscross and Jamal Igle) made this version of Firestorm a fairly straightforward, enjoyable exercise in superheroics, so I wouldn’t expect anything less from McDuffie. DC has a preview here, and if you like what you read also offers a paperback reprinting the One Year Later issues (#s 23-27)

Is it just me, or is it an incredible comic week? I am not just referring to the release of Civil War #7 and The Brave and the Bold #1, but several publishers seemed to release many of their cool titles all at once. I’m having a pretty tough time picking just one. I wonder if the rest of the Blog@ crew feels the same way.

JK Parkin’s Pick of the Week
In one week, we’ve got Criminal Macabre, Birds of Prey, DMZ, Brave & the Bold, Civil War, Nightly News, Noble Causes, Iron Fist, Local, She Hulk, Punisher War Journal and Wasteland

It would be easier for me to tell you what I’m not excited about.

Nothing screams “Valentine’s Day” like a romatic trip with your loved ones to the comic store, then buying them that special something. Can you imagine it?

“Oh honey! This is the greatest Valentines Day ever! I never want flowers or chocolates ever again! No, don’t bother taking me to that fancy romantic French restaurant. Let’s just stay here at the comic shop. Yes, I know we have a room booked in that five-star hotel. We can
just bring our comics there and read them, right? But not in the jacuzzi! The steam might make the pages wrinkle. I love you!”

I tell no lie. This is what will happen. Here is what everyone at Blog@Newsarama is planning this Wednesday…

Graeme McMillan’s Pick of the Week

Only fitting that this week, when comics ship on Valentine’s Day, that I find myself choosing something that I already know that I love: Matt Fraction and Gabriel Ba’s Casanova #7 ships this week, ending the first run of the book on a high note – For those of you who’ve not been picking this up so far, the trade’s out in a couple of months and is highly, highly recommended.

Meanwhile, DC provides an unusual valentine to my lovely wife Kate who, ever since his appearance on Smallville last year, has been madly in love with Aquaman. Showcase Presents Aquaman Volume 1 may not be everyone’s cupidgift, but on this side of San Francisco, it’ll do the job.

This week is huge, as it brings not only the Dark Tower midnight madness event, but also the very long-awaited premiere of Jeff Smith’s Shazam! book and much, much more …

Kevin Melrose’s Pick of the Week

I’m really torn this week: One one hand, there’s the debut of Jeff Smith’s long-anticipated Shazam: The Monster Society of Evil mini-series. On the other, there’s the second volume of Eiji Otsuka and Housui Yamazaki’s wonderfully quirky horror manga, The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service. And if I were some sort of mutant and had a third hand, I’d also point to the second volume of Yamazaki’s Mail (I’m just now reading the first volume). I … I can’t choose. Everybody wins!

The theme this week seems to be those amazing animals, as the ronin rabbit Usagi Yojimbo reaches its 100th issue at Dark Horse, Fantagraphics debuts the high-end and killer-looking Beasts hardcover, and Marvel brings us the triumphant return of Spider-Ham!

Yes, that’s right … Spider-Ham! I don’t know what else I can say beyond that. Let’s hear from the rest of the Blog@ crew … or from Tom, anyway …

It’s Wednesday again, and that means NEW COMICS! Of course if you’re out in the western United States, it might mean LOTS OF NEW COMICS! That is, if everything finally shipped from two weeks in a row of massively allocated comics. If anyone from the affected areas can post if they got their comics, that would be swell.
