How much for that Gundam in the window?

January 18th, 2008
Author Stephanie Chan

Ever think about building your very own giant mech?

At least $725 million for the parts and materials, according to an estimate published on the SciencePortal.jpSciencePortal website run by the Japan Science and Technology Agency. The price tag for this giant humanoid, which would stand 18 meters (60 feet) tall and weigh 43.4 metric tons (nearly 100,000 lbs), does not include the cost of labor (this is where an extensive pool of robot slave labor comes in handy), nor does it include the cost of the infrastructure needed to support the machine once you are ready to climb aboard and take it for a walk.

Freaky Joker-esque child tortures dolls in Japanese commercial

December 21st, 2007
Author Stephanie Chan

When I saw this commercial for Kewpie cellphone charms, it really reminded me of the Joker. I almost want to say that Christopher Nolan was inspired by this ad. The charms themselves, which some look like tortured babies, rank as one of the strangest things I’ve ever seen come out of Japan, and I’ve seen a lot of strange things. The land of Hello Kitty isn’t always fluffy and cute.

Forbes released their in-depth Forbes Fictional 15 with Scrooge McDuck taking top spot at a value of $28.8 billion. Bruce Wayne made 8th place valued at $7.0 billion with Tony Stark following closely behind at $6.0 billion giving him 10th place.

The link also lists the top 25 largest fictional companies. It’s pretty fun and worth reading individual entries if you have the time.

Ghostbusters 3 – for Real?

November 15th, 2007
Author Stephanie Chan

Game Informer announced their December cover story will be about an upcoming sequel to the Ghostbusters movies, in video game form.

Harold Ramis, Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd are getting back together and revisiting their roles to make a sequel to Ghostbusters 1 and 2 – in video-game form, and we’ve got the first details. Both Aykroyd and Ramis are teaming up for scriptwriting duties and are going far beyond just the typical licensed add-your-voice-to-the-game-you-had-nothing-to-do-with formula. And no, this has nothing to do with the Ghostbusters Zootfly video demonstration that floated around the internet in January.

Since 1989, after the release of Ghostbusters 2, there has been almost non-stop talk about a third movie. Going to video game is an interesting move, and looks like a brilliant way to reunite the cast without limiting themselves to the effects of aging.

Marie Severin in hospital

October 16th, 2007
Author Stephanie Chan

Fantagraphic’s blog reported comic legend Marie Severin is recovering from a stroke which struck her on October 11th.

My pal Greg Sadowski just passed on news that legendary EC and Marvel Comics’ cartoonist/colorist/designer Marie Severin suffered a stroke last Thursday. Direct your get-well cards to her at:

Marie Severin, patient
c/o Huntington Hospital
270 Park Ave.
Huntington, NY 11743

Severin began her career at EC Comics in the 1950s as one of the great colouring pioneers, followed by a lengthly three decade stint with Marvel which included penciling, inking and colouring numerous titles. And for me personally, she is one of my inspirations to get into this industry.

All of us at Newsarama wish her a speedy recovery.

Kym Barret joins Wolverine

October 15th, 2007
Author Stephanie Chan

A lot of people might not appreciate this, but Kym Barret is joining Wolverine as the costume designer.

Born in Brisbane, Australia, Barrett has enjoyed a long and creative collaboration with the Wachowski brothers. Together they’ve worked on the blockbuster ‘Matrix’ series and the upcoming Speed Racer. Her other costume design credits cover a wide range of feature films for some of the industry’s most acclaimed filmakers, including Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, Three Kings, Eragon, and Gothika starring Halle Berry.

Awesome background, right? Costume design makes or breaks a series; The Matrix wouldn’t have been The Matrix without the look. This movie just sounds better and better.

Spielberg talks Tintin movie

October 10th, 2007
Author Stephanie Chan

On the set of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Steven Spielberg reportedly gave a tour group a few details on the upcoming Tintin movie.

• Just in case you thought they were joking, these films will be entirely mo-cap.

• Spielberg will shoot the first film (he didn’t reveal the title) in thirty days. Peter Jackson will join him on the soundstage for some of this, thus indicating that the film will be a highly collaborative venture. In fact, they duo might co-direct the third feature rather than track down another helmer for the final entry.

• Spielberg stressed that he and Jackson will be on the “same soundstage”. I don’t know if this means Spielberg will be heading down to New Zealand, or if Jackson will spending more time than usual in the States.

• The f/x will be done exclusively by WETA. In other words, this will be Spielberg’s first film to not use ILM for visual f/x since… Raiders of the Lost Ark?

• Spielberg and Jackson have a dedicated line through which they can share production art, storyboards and all that stuff whenever they like.

Story scooped by Jeremy Smith for Chud.com who also noted that Crystal Skull will be shot using film instead of on digital.

According to Spielberg, he will never go digital. Which means Tintin is being done on film? Now I’m confused.

The most ‘incredible’ PC ever built

October 9th, 2007
Author Stephanie Chan

Tech blog Engadget found this astonishing custom PC modifications which uses the 13″ Incredible Hulk action figure. The creator of this monstrosity, ‘deathstarchris’, talks about his 14-month creation and his inspiration.

I bought the action figure and put it on my desk and the more I stared at it, I thought “I bet I have enough distance to fir a MB inside his grasp. Did a lot of searching, and found an older intel board that did the trick. Micro ATX format. 8 & three quarter inches. Soon into the project I realized I would need more figures for parts. Ended up buying three.

A good chunk of my inspiration came from Dale Keown and the amazing way he transformed the way I saw The Hulk. The New Incredible Hulk #377′s cover is present in all the imagery I used. Keown took the raw imagery and made it clean and filed with presence. Dale changed my thinking of ‘traditional’ and all I can hope for is I can do some justice in the same arena.

More about this computer modification can be found in a flash presentation on FusionMod. Click the image in the top post to start the show. Slow computers beware! The presentation is pretty resource heavy.

Batgirl rappels 27-story building in Edmonton, Canada today

September 10th, 2007
Author Stephanie Chan

If you are in the Edmonton downtown area today, look up, way up, to see a hero above.

19-year old Taylor Cumming will be donning the cape and cowl and rappelling off a 27 story building. The stunt is a part of The Drop Zone which raises money for Easter Seals. Ordinary people become extraordinary heroes to help kids with disabilities. The Edmonton Journal talked to the university student.

“My 21-year-old brother, Garrett, has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and has used a wheelchair since he was 12,” says Cumming.

“His wheelchair is funded. But many are not fortunate enough to have full funding. “So I plan to help Easter Seals by rappelling. Hopefully our campaign will help needy kids and adults get equipment. The rappel also will help fund a residence and a summer camp for kids.” Garrett, who needs help with living fundamentals, was diagnosed when he was three. The siblings have always been close.

“I’m pretty proud of my sister,” he says.

Taylor is the most successful fundraiser in the Edmonton area so far, with nearly $4,000 raised.

The Batgirl outfit? “I was in a singing recital a couple of years ago,” she says. “I made it for a skit and knew it would come in handy.” Garrett, borrowing her psychologist’s hat, says it’s good for people to push themselves outside their comfort zone.

The drop takes place at Sutton Hotel, 10235 – 101 Street.

Cumming’s sponsorship page can be found here.

Future drop dates for other local heroes are scheduled across Canada. They include:

Over one million Japanese men obsessed with Rei Ayanami

September 7th, 2007
Author Stephanie Chan

ComiPress linked to and translated an article published by financial newspaper, the Japan Economic Times.

I believe there are at least one million men in Japan who love Rei Ayanami. She is an icy, quiet, unemotional 14 years old girl. This bandaged Goddess is an icon of Japanese anime. She has a decisive mind inside her fragile appearance.

Today is the premier of the new Evangelion movie. The Evangelion series started in 1995 as an anime. The popularity of this sub-main character (Rei) still has not gone down despite the anime’s age. I walked down the streets of Akihabara seeking Ayanami, yet all Ayanami figurines were sold out, and some of the premium ones were being traded several hundred thousand yen on auction websites.

In the real world, vigorous people become popular and attract other people, so why are our minds caught by such a dark and obsessed character?

The rest can be read here.
