His rival it seems had broken his dreams, by stealing the blog of his fancy.

There have been so many shocks and surprises and the internet just can’t be broken anymore. It’s become tougher, like when you tear a phone book into pieces and eventually it just won’t rip anymore. How do you tell who’s who and what’s what in this new world out there? Don’t worry. I’m here to comfort and guide. Welcome to the world outside B@N. Welcome to Meanwhile….

Note: It helps to think of this as the “Assistant Editors Month” of Meanwhile.

Dr. Doom and Reed Richards, Superman and Lex Luthor, Sleepwalker and that other dream guy, Dave Campbell and Chris Sims. There are certain rivalries that bring out the best in each other. They make each participant become more than they otherwise would have been. What if these rivalries sat down and decided to ask each other some questions? What amazing insights would be gained? Today we find out.

Only moron and genius would fight a losing battle.

So, It’s been a while. It looks as things have gotten a little wilder while I was gone. Marvel decided to publish books where they turned characters like Slapstick into Flagello, the Flagellation Man. Superman won’t stop crying over at DC. There have been so many shocks and surprises and the internet just can’t be broken anymore. It’s become tougher, like when you tear a phone book into pieces and eventually it just won’t rip anymore. It’s just too hard to find good content out there. How do you tell who’s who and what’s what in this new world out there? Don’t worry, people. I’m back to comfort and guide. Welcome to the world outside B@N. Welcome to Meanwhile….

Meanwhile…

July 25th, 2006
Author Shane Bailey

The comic blogosphere seems to grow larger every day and just like comics, sometimes it’s pretty easy to get a little lost. “Meanwhile…” will act as your map pointing out what interesting discussions are happening out there while you’re reading Blog@Newsarama.

This is my last Meanwhile column here at Blog@Newsarama.

I’ve enjoyed the time with everyone on the team, all of you reading the column week after week, and all the bloggers out there, but the real world calls and I don’t want Meanwhile to suffer because of it. Don’t worry. Meanwhile won’t be ending. There will always be someone here telling you what’s what and who’s who in the blogosphere. JK and the rest of the crew here at B@N have some surprises in store for you over the next couple of weeks with some guests taking over for a while before the new Meanwhile columnist is announced.

Anyway, for this last column I’ve decided to list some of my favorite blogs/sites and why I enjoy them so much. Do you think the new columnist might be in my list? I guess we’ll have to keep reading to find out.

And we’re back. We’re a little late, but we’re back. This week we have some reactions to Joe Quesada’s remarks, A Brief History on Arisia, Harvey Pekar, Marvel Models, The 1980′s X-men movie, Wonder Woman’s catchphrase, a couple of Doctors, the fourth wall, Audio comics, and The Second Carnival of Feminist Science Fiction and Fantasy Fans.

Everyone seemed to love all the controversy last week, but sadly there wasn’t much in the way of arguments, backstabbing, and in-fighting this week. I apologize to all of you. I guess most bloggers took out their frustrations during the holiday by making things go explodey and drinking heavily instead of attacking each other over petty arguments and rivalries. Stupid holiday screwing everything up. On with the links!

I ♥ imaginary stories

July 5th, 2006
Author Shane Bailey

Everyone thinks it: What if? What if I didn’t make the same decisions? How would my life have changed? What would happen if I had actually gone up and talked to that girl/guy? Would I be happy now if I did something differently? Would my life be worse?

It’s so common that there are whole sections in bookstores on alternate histories, and the majority of sci-fi stories are based on trying to decide that same question. Although there are so many varied alternate histories and scenarios, we keep getting sucked in again and again because there’s something magical about those stories. We’re all interested in how things could have turned out, and comic fans are no exception.

Having a story become “imaginary” or out of continuity sets the character free. These stories are allowed to “break the rules that kept their characters in the limbo known as the status quo. Superman doesn’t have to be good; he can now be a villain. Hell, Luke Cage can now be a woman. The character doesn’t even have to be human any longer if the writer doesn’t want him to be. The stories can be about anything. They can change something fundamental in the character and it doesn’t change who the original character is because it “doesn’t really count.” Ben Parker could still be alive, Peter could become a greedy celebrity who couldn’t care less about his family, let alone saving the world, and we would still want to read about it.

Wow, almost everything on the web is either some type of controversy or a review of Superman Returns this week. I guess people don’t like talking about happy things right before long holiday weekends. Lets get all the reviews and arguments out of the way and then we can get to the other topics that stood out this week.

Well, this is the tour of the blogosphere from our swanky new digs at Newsarama. I’m glad to be here and I just want to take the time to thank everyone who helped make it happen. Big ups to everyone! Now lets see what we can find out there floating in the ether this past week. Oh! Here we go, if you’ll just take a look to your left you’ll see…
