AlloCine TV has a short interview with Heath Ledger about playing The Joker. He says that he had fun with the role and that playing a psychopathic clown lets you go as an actor. You can check out the interview here, it is about two minutes into the video.

I was one of the people that was kind of iffy about Ledger playing the Joker, but the more I hear and see about him playing the character, the better I feel about it.
