The Hits and The Misses

I missed Paul O’Brien’s latest look at Marvel’s chart placings in Diamond’s sales rankings earlier this week, unfortunately. It’s particularly interesting in the wake of the various Marvel NOW! launches, because you can clearly see the relaunches that have worked – Superior Spider-Man and the Avengers books by Hickman – and those that, for whatever reason are struggling. To see Iron Man, X-Men Legacy and Avengers Assemble all at or below the order level they had pre-relaunch is surprising, and also depressing, as those are books I enjoy. One day, someone will work out a formula for what the audience does and doesn’t want…

But that’s the definition of formulaic! (Anti-Life Equation) Do we give people what they want or something new, that they may not yet know the like?

I’m surprised how quickly Fantastic Four and FF dropped back to pre-Now numbers. Fantastic Four as a franchise seems to be Marvel’s equivalent to Legion of Superheroes. Lots of different visions and creators and ideas, but never seeming to connect with a wide spectrum of readers.

It’s not surprising at all to see X-Men Legacy struggling – the absolute majority of X-fans (myself included) have no love for Legion, whereas almost the same number of people love Rogue. I don’t, but at least when Rogue was the focus of that series other X-characters were also relevant to the story, instead of simply an excuse to show how much of an a** Legion is.

Ellie, either you are not really reading “X-Men: Legacy” or we have very different tastes. I think it’s a fantastic book with a unique flavor and some of the best writing and artwork to come out of Marvel NOW. And I didn’t know a thing about Legion before I started reading it, other than him being Xavier’s son and having really weird hair.
