Just a funny bit that’s making the rounds on facebook (hat tip to Walt Simonson and Phil Jimenez), here fan page Comic Book Movies takes a look at Superman’s costume from Man of Steel and gives a suggestion of what a good sponsored cleaning could do for it.
The image originally comes from Deviant Art user “thedreaded1″.
What do you think, does the costume need a scrubbing to go from A to B?
March 18th, 2013 at 9:29 am
I agree with the colour sentiment but for gods sake get over the lack of trunks!
March 18th, 2013 at 9:35 am
red trunks break up all that blue. if anything, at least give him a big red belt.
March 18th, 2013 at 9:46 am
Absolutely!! Give him a RED belt or something that is reminiscent of the Superman we all know and have come to love! The suit is ok, nothing to write home about, but…it just looks….drab.
March 18th, 2013 at 10:01 am
I definitely like the traditional look. The costume for the new movie is almost as bad as it was for Superman Returns. Put the yellow S back on the cape, as well.
March 18th, 2013 at 10:30 am
Ugh. Lead Sharp is right. The panties are a joke for the modern world. Would ANYONE ever really fly around trying to look majestic and be taken seriously wearing his bloomers OVER his pants? Of course, there are no real superheroes…..ahem….I will agree that the suit is a little dark, but that’s the real world approach. It’s most likely, in the movie, supposed to be a Kryptonian outfit, not a superhero costume. It’s fine the way it is. Maybe we should actually see the movie and take it from there?
March 18th, 2013 at 10:38 am
stick to what is supposed to be.. there’s enough gray in this world already!..don’t mess with success!

Wished they would have asked me first before using my image.

Just like the ASM sequel will have to wait and see if everyone loves this rendition of the Metropolis wonder to get the costume we all want to see.
March 18th, 2013 at 11:01 am
I like the new suit it’s modern and less cartoony. A suit that can be taken serious. Although dark red trunks would break up the blue.
March 18th, 2013 at 11:37 am
Well, if you like your superheroes grim, depressing, colorless, and realistic, why are you reading comics in the first place? I read them back in the stone age for fantasy, hope, belief in a better day, among other reasons. If that’s what’s needed today, I get it, but I wouldn’t get it from comics, not with so many other grim, depressing, colorless, and realistic outlets today.
March 18th, 2013 at 11:38 am
Good God, this looks terrible on the right. It looks like he ran through a pre-school coloring hours discovery of the color red and also had someone crap on his forehead. Get rid of that garbage and quit trying to TRAP Superman into your nilly willy silly neurotically nostalgic view! Let him be free of it! BE FREE SUPERMAN BE FREE!
March 18th, 2013 at 11:51 am
DC characters have traditionally been more malleable than Marvels and have the ability to be adapted to many different settings whether ultra realistic or ultra campy.
MAN OF STEEL is just one version of the character just as the Christopher Reeve movies were and just as the George Reeves TV series was.
I don’t mind seeing someone’s take on the character as long as the results are good. The real/correct Superman is the one in your imagination, anyway.
March 18th, 2013 at 1:15 pm
Lol…I guezz tide kan get anything klean
March 18th, 2013 at 1:34 pm
Nothing should ever change! Everything should remain the same as when I first developed a connection to it!
March 18th, 2013 at 2:26 pm
There’s nothing wrong with change. However, changes need to improve something in order to be effective. This ( taking away the trunks) isn’t an improvement. It’s a step back.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:09 pm
Taking the trunks away won’t stop trolls from trolling.
March 18th, 2013 at 3:28 pm
The new costume is not as bad as people are complaining about. I say make the blue a little more saturated and like someone else suggested, break-up the blue with a red belt (that actually serves a function. To hell withh the red trunks, that was always a stupid idea.
March 18th, 2013 at 4:08 pm
Didn’t really care about the red trunks and costume color but that AFTER deserves a WOW!!
March 18th, 2013 at 5:03 pm
That’s right the short are totally stupid! It’s not like he’s wearing some alien costume that doesn’t conform modern American fashion sense- oh what.
Personally, I just don’t like the funky Spalding designed fabric they are using, but then I guess it wouldn’t be an alien costume that doesn’t conform modern American fashion sense.
March 18th, 2013 at 5:12 pm
Love the look after the Tide! It looks like SUPERMAN!
The trunks are part of the costume. Always have been, always should be.
If you don’t think modern people would wear trunks, then surely you know that modern people wouldn’t wear capes. Capes are much sillier than trunks. So if you get rid of the trunks, it’s a very slippery slope to ditching the cape. Afterall, “The Incredibles” showed us how stupid capes were and how cool trunks look!
March 18th, 2013 at 5:42 pm
They’re arguably recalling the Max Fleischer animation a bit with the more muted coloring: http://content.internetvideoarchive.com/content/photos/6079/25532343_.jpg
March 18th, 2013 at 6:11 pm
Instead of those little red panties, Superman should just have a little red S-shield over his crotch, like Supergirl has.
March 18th, 2013 at 6:28 pm
I gotta question, how does Supes take a super wizzzzzz in the Man of Steel costume?
March 18th, 2013 at 7:46 pm
People who call the trunks “panties” are being sexist, insinuating it makes Superman girly, and therefore inferior or worthy of derision.
March 18th, 2013 at 9:35 pm
I don’t mind the new take on the costume, but the blue does have a bit too much “faded blue jeans” to it.
March 18th, 2013 at 9:37 pm
My guess would be that they (and DC) got rid of the trunks mostly ‘cuz they’re sick of people making fun of them. They were a common feature on the circus outfits that inspired Superman’s outfit, because they helped…um…tone down certain things that leotards kind of emphasize in men and might have shocked the delicate sensibilities of a family audience.
March 19th, 2013 at 12:14 am
How much longer are you people going to complain about the new costume? Why don’t you wait and see what it looks like in the movie? I like the new costume it’s more modern. The old one is outdated and cartoonish.
March 19th, 2013 at 7:30 am
The trunks are an archaic throw back to when they based the costume on strongmen in the circus, who then promptly realised how stupid the look was leaving it with suffering superheroes for years to come.
The only reason it was kept was because of brand recognisability and that’s all. They are never coming back, the new (comic) costume is a VAST improvement and the movie one needs work but NOT trunks.
March 19th, 2013 at 8:15 am
Phil: there have been 22 attempts at costume changes for Superman, and they’ve all failed for a reason. Superman doesn’t need to be “modern”. His design was perfect as it was. Superman should be a bit of an anachronism, both in look and attitude, that’s what makes him work as a character.
Lead Sharp: No Superman was never a “throwback to circus strong men”, because circus strong me of the era never wore shorts like that. most of them either wore a loincloth or ballet leotard. A lot of them wore tights as well. So if your going to slam “the shorts” for being archaic, so is every other superhero costume as well. Take em all away then. No logo’s no tights, no identifiable symbolism of anytpe, just jeans an leather jackets/trenchcoats for the lot of them.
March 19th, 2013 at 8:29 am
I’m ok….with the red trunks being gone. I’m also ok with the faded blue. However….the red and yellow on the new costume need to be closer to brightness as the original costume. I don’t mind the darker blue but the brighter colors need to stand out.
March 19th, 2013 at 8:50 am
First they took the trunks, because they looked “stupid”.
Then they took the cape, because capes are “stupid”.
Then they took the symbol, because symbols are “stupid”.
Then they took the colors, because colors are “stupid”.
Then we got Superman wearing black leather, because that is cool.
March 19th, 2013 at 10:12 am
LOL – the old “oh no! the studio execs are gonna make superman wear black leather and mow down bad guys punisher-style” straw man.
I think the problem with the brighter colors is that they don’t look like they’ve ever actually been worn in a fight before. The guy on the right looks like he just took his outfit out of its original plastic wrapping and put it on 5 minutes ago.
March 19th, 2013 at 10:31 am
Benwahbob your point of these 22 costume changes is moot because most of those “costume changes” were minor color changes and size changes to the S on his chest (Except for the Red/Blue Energy Supermen that was attrocious IMO). Its failed cause the overall design never changed with the times. To prove the point his Nu52 and more modern look has lasted the test of time for close to 2 years now. Also something that should be noted that no one has touched upon that I have seen yet is his Nu52 look is not clothes nor is it tights. Its a Kryptonian Ceremonial full body armor that actually has properties specific to kryptonians and enhances and singles out kryptonian blood in beings that share blood types (as seen on Superboy in H’el on Earth). So if you want to be technical you wont see red undies on any armor (earth originated or not) that would make no sense. As far as Man of Steel’s costume goes the blue is way too dark and needs a yellow belt to break it up. It needs to look more like the Nu52. Futuristic and much more scientific which would certainly solidify what any superman fan knows of krypton being the most technologically/scientifically embraced planet in the DC Universe whether it be “Pre52″ or “Nu52″
March 19th, 2013 at 11:52 am
I remember when Nu52 was launching. they said that the line on Superman’s costume would be explained. that they weren’t just something thrown in there. and they did explain it as armor.. so how come EVERYONE has those lines?
honestly that’s my only real complaint about the new costuming in nu52.
March 19th, 2013 at 4:45 pm
Do trunks make sense? Probably not. Neither do men that fly and pick up mountains. People have had a iconic Superman for decades, asking people to just forget it, or get over it is just provoking an group of people that will never agree with you. The new Superman costume is great idea, and if it was invented for a character that was branded the “one and only Superman” it would have been more accepted. Most Superman fans are traditionalists that enjoy the stability of the character and his rich history. Some people love the changes and some don’t. Calling everyone that disagrees with you point of view as a troll is just childish. If you don’t like the changes don’t buy anymore. I tried DC for a year before I made that choice. I will try the new Superman movie when it comes out on DVD, other than that I’ve had my fill of DC for the forseeable future. If you love it, support it, buy it, good for you. I hope you’re as level headed when DC changes everything on you again.
March 20th, 2013 at 12:11 am
If you’re going to take the red trunks away, at least replace them with a belt or something to break up the blue. Which was the reason for the trunks in the first place. They broke up the blue. It’s called design. The sad thing is they added the Krytonian bits on the sides….but didn’t color the red. You think they would have taken the complaints of the muted colors for the Superman Returns costume to heart.
Look at the Marvel films. The first Iron Man film had him in somewhat muted colors. They made him brighter in the sequel and in The Avengers. Bright costumes are certainly being accepted by modern audiences. Hollywood tends to overthink everything, hence all the radical redesigning. I suppose we should be thankful that Superman isn’t just in jeans and wearing an athletic fit t-shirt with the S shield on it.
March 20th, 2013 at 12:45 am
LOL – the old “oh no! the studio execs are gonna make superman wear black leather and mow down bad guys punisher-style” straw man.
March 20th, 2013 at 7:26 pm
18 months running does not constitute “standing the test of time.” The only real measure of the redesign’s (all of them) success will be found in the sales figures. Disallowing the initial surge based on the hype/new #1s syndrome…have sales figures drastically and steadily increased? If not, then you’ve failed to bring in a new audience which was the stated purpose of the exercise.
March 20th, 2013 at 8:41 pm
Love it!

A darker superman. I don’t think that is what they are goin to do. Supes needs an update. I think they are going to pull it off. love the tide ad though. btw this is dark and violent..rated R Man Of Steel is far from this.

Actually M2c2 that DOES mean it has lasted the test of time. With the comics medium and the paper medium in general “fading” the whole reason for the costume change is to reach a broader audience and to appeal to a newer generation to sell and make money. The fact that its still going strong after 18 months and his redesign running in 3 different ongoing titles and the sales are still rising..yes it has lasted the test of time especially when you want to keep the attention span of a newer generation that has more avenues of entertainment to go to….
March 23rd, 2013 at 3:00 pm
18 months does not mean it has withstood the test of time. The t shirt was cool, the costume not so much. I think people expect further change. Artists will eventually play with the belt, which is clumsy looking. I do believe the red shorts are gone for good. The comment about DC characters being more malleable is ridiculous, by the way.
