Vertigo’s OGN Plans: A Glimpse Into A Possible Future?

February 22nd, 2013
Author Graeme McMillan

So, what to make of the new Vertigo plans announced yesterday for OGNs for both Fairest and The Unwritten, in addition to their ongoing series? It was something that was both surprising – Neither series has seemed a success the size of Fables or Sandman, say – and unsurprising (Both Fables and Sandman have gone the “additional OGNs in parallel with the regular series” route before for the imprint) at once. It was, if nothing else, a sign of movement and life for the imprint in a week where the final issue of Hellblazer shipped and sounded something similar to a death knell – A really bad cough, perhaps, or an unfortunate operation – for many. I wonder whether it also was a sign of things to come. Given the relative lack of success of Vertigo’s single issues in the Direct Market, could the imprint move to a direct-to-OGN format overall and still succeed with its target audience…?

For some reason, I think that Vertigo – for limited series at least – is going to move to a digital-first to collection model, skipping the DM singles entirely.

And, yes, I know that probably wouldn’t save much money initially. But the model would give DC the ability to be more patient with slower sales. (Especially if they only do print collections once the digital issues meet a certain sales threshold. Whether that’s dollar amount or number sold, I don’t know.)

At some point in the near future, I expect most DC titles to skip the pamphlet entirely. They’ll go from digital serializations to GN in print. They offer enough titles between their imprints to keep the direct market supplied with a new GN or two every week.

If DC goes with the direct digital and skips the single issues, or does the OGN format with a $9.99 to $10.99 price format, they will lose a lot more readers. It’s bad enough with Marvel books at $3.99 and people struggling to pay those prices, it would be tougher for people to afford the OGN format.

I think there will be a lot of people saying that would be the final dagger and walk away from buying books from the direct market and look to the back issue market at conventions. I see the ditigal or the OGN as the downfall of the industry.

    I don’t agree at all.

DC’s digital first offerings have been very successful.

Produce Vertigo for weekly digital release at $.99 ea, then release as collected print collections around that $9.99 or so price point.

Cheers. I am interested in this data. Excellent details I’ll come back for virtually every data about the Several Day time Diet.
