The Flash: The Longest Comic Book Panel Alive(ish)

January 3rd, 2013
Author Graeme McMillan

Why, yes, Francis Manapul really is continuing to quietly make The Flash one of the most interesting books of the New 52 on a formal level:

Flash 15 should be in stores today. This book has continued to allow me to experiment and play around with my storytelling. In this issue, Barry has a “flash forward” in his unconscious state. Three potential outcomes streams out of his mind, so I decided to try and keep each stream continuous. The last half of the book is made up of all double page spreads which if you’re crazy enough to buy multiple copies can actually be viewed as one long image. As the streams go on, each one come to an end until there is only one stream, and then we’re brought back to the “real” world.

Seriously, holy moley.

Is the story about Wally West? Then still not interested. Also, Captain Cold should have a gun, otherwise he’s just Icicle, and that’s lame.

It isn’t the longest panel ever done, that honor goes to Scott McCloud.

Saying this book is one of the most interesting books of the New 52 is damning with faint praise, as most of the New 52 are terrible and uninteresting. It doesn’t do the book justice. You should say Manapul is doing one of the most interesting comics out today, period, even when compared to actual good comics. He’s really knocking it out the park.

I really want a full size savable picture of this for my computer monitors. Dang that’s some gorgeous art!

That’s very interesting from an experimental-of-view, but how readable and user-friendly is it?

  7. Simon DelMonte Says:

Amazing art, but I dropped this series as the story, script and characterization never matched the pictures. I appreciate that DC wants its better artists to push the envelope. But someone who knows how to write a script is sorely needed here.

Even on Comixology, it really isn’t that difficult. Just follow the colors and everything works out. The “Choose your own adventure” issue of Adventure Time is more difficult.

Awesome. They should print it as a fold-out page or something, shouldn’t they? They did it with Blackest Night and FCBD, why couldn’t they do it with this?
