Are These Really The Worst Comics Of The Year?

December 21st, 2012
Author Graeme McMillan

Congratulations, Complex Magazine. By running an article that claims to announce the 10 Worst Comic Books of 2012, you’ve guaranteed yourself attention and almost inevitable outcry from those who enjoyed said comics – especially when the list includes something like Avengers Vs. X-Men:

Though it’s always entertaining to see the heroes go at it, this book was 12 issues of overblown story decisions, terrible characterizations, and shallow shocks to boost sales. Cyclops and Captain America were written so inconsistently from their personalities over the years that they felt like strangers in this series. It’s as if they only acted a certain way to fit the plot around them. Cyclops’ sudden change, in particular, threw away years of characterization so the story had a villain to root against.

Pretty much agreed on The Savage Hawkman, mind you.

I kind of liked Suicide Squad. And Superman hasn’t been bad as much as it has bland to the extreme.

But surely some publishers besides Marvel and DC did bad comics. I read the first issue of the Peter Cannon comic and I would call that a bad comic.

  2. VichusSmith Says:

It’s such a mainstream list. No comics outside of the Big 2 were stinkers?

  3. JohnByrneSaysOnTwitter Says:

Link bait article at Complex so of course it’s only mainstream comics.

  4. Brian Says:

Wait, what? A Top 10 List NOT published by Newsarama?

Maybe the world does end today after all…

    :-P

Saying thanks will not just be enough, for the extraordinary lucidity in your writing. I will immediately grab your rss feed to stay privy of any updates.

I love how he kept saying that Lobdell need to fix this or that on his titles. You need talent to do that.

  7. Hutchimus Says:

Could someone release a best/worst list that relied on more than snark and unsubstantiated opinion?

  8. Jay W Says:

Yeah, this is a little too full of personal issues and not representative of the worst stuff. There are issues out there that were obvious fill-ins, tie-in media comics that were ill-conceived and published just to make a buck, etc. I’m getting to the point where I don’t even read these things any more.

  9. ThePlainTruth Says:

can we get real journalist to report on the comics industry again?

    Graeme Cracker need not apply

although he could easily score the top few places in worst blog of 2012

  10. Trang Oconner Says:

I’m sorry for this intrusion, I see from your site that we are very much into the same things.

  11. Michael Payton Says:

I’m not sure what people are whining about. There isn’t a single good comic on that list. Not one. Anyone that enjoys any of these books has no taste.

  12. Leonora Kowalski Says:

Where did you got this much info on your blog from?? Also can i take the initiative to take the feeds from your blog for my own website??

  13. reveerb Says:

Its like listing the top 10 smartphones of the year, you know about these already if you somehow missed them then you probably were living under a rock.

  14. tralfaz Says:

that list should be topped with Scott Lobdell books with Teen Titans being #1

  15. Denyse Caddel Says:

These footwear are likely to be well-defined, they’re going with lots of varieties and they also just look great in your feet. Your added is if you intend to participate in baseball, these individuals master baseball also. Can’t wipe out the purchase price.
