The real answer is "give me a reason to get the second issue," but to be a tad more objective, it should establish the feel of the series while getting us to and at least a little bit past the premise documented in the pre-release press.

I have to get an idea of where the book appears to be going, and if it isn't delivered in the first issue then it'd better be delivered quickly. With the Marvel now stuff the first issue of Captain America didn't really do that, nor the first Fantastic Four, but it was enough to bring me back for the second issues of each. Conversely, the first issue of Iron Man was enough to tell me Greg Land is still awful.

Wow, did Stephenson run over Khosia's dog?

I think most publishers have tried the "great point to jump on" bit with their books. Do we have any proof that such things work?

Personally, I don't feel like the majority of comic book readers care. We understand the medium or genre well enough to know what we're getting into. Hell, a lot of us enjoy the fact that we don't know everything right away. Some of my fondest memories are of jumping into the Legion of Superheroes after they'd been around for 25 years and then going back and figuring things out.

The "new reader friendly" bit is, in my mind, for people who aren't as familiar with comics, but I don't think those people are even coming in the door.
