I’ve been entirely remiss in not mentioning the passing yesterday of Spain Rodriguez, the underground cartoonist behind Trashman, Zodiac Mindwarp and more recent, autobio work like Cruisin’ With The Hound and My True Story. To be honest, I was scared of mentioning it because I really don’t know enough about his work to do him justice, but that’s no excuse; just listening to this interview with art spiegelman gives enough of a sense of what’s been lost with his death to know that, at least. After all, how many people could have claimed to have contributed to classic underground comic Zap Comix, Hustler and Mother Jones in their career…?
He died at home, in San Francisco, after a six-year battle with cancer, leaving behind a wife, daughter and sister.
