Matt Fraction Donates HAWKEYE Royalties to Sandy Relief Efforts

Good on you, Matt Fraction:

Speaking of real-life regular people doing good, Fraction has decided to donate his royalties for scripting “Hawkeye” #7 to the American Red Cross. So the more copies that you buy, the more money Matt will donate. It’s an incredibly generous gesture, one that Fraction admits, is risky, but worth it, “…it occured to me that if this is too successful that this could be the most painful check that I ever write…but c’mon, make it hurt!”

Firstly, you should all be buying Hawkeye anyway, because it’s a good book and the best thing Fraction’s done in a long time. Secondly, this is just great. #7, which is now a story about a hurricane hitting New York with art by the wonderful Steve Lieber and Jesse Hamm, is released in January. It’ll have this (stunning) David Aja cover:

Good on Matt Fraction. I’m sure Marvel will be very happy to keep all the extra money they make by people bumping their orders for charity.

  2. Radley Says:

It would be great if Marvel would match his donation.

    Really cool.

Though I always find myself wondering just how having all those heroes would affect events like this. Surely a Reed Richards could have mitigated things a bit, even if no one can actually change the weather without huge repercussions. This isn’t to say that you don’t write a story about Sandy in a Marvel comic. Real world things happen in Marvel and always have. But I am still left wondering. Maybe just wishing.

I’m surprised that Marvel pays “incentives” for something that sells at the level HAWKEYE does. Last Marvel plan I saw, incentives for single issue comics started at 50,000 copies. Good on them if they lowered that threshold.

And good move by Fraction. Still, buying a $3 comic so the writer will donate less than 4¢ (unless Marvel has also increased their royalty percentages) to the Red Cross isn’t the most efficient way to help.

This book is amazing, and that’s a wonderful gesture on Fraction’s part. Guess I should order 2, huh?

  6. Josh Says:

If Marvel matches this, I’ll definitely buy it.

  7. Sallyp Says:

    What an incredibly selfless gesture!

  8. Nate Says:

Marvel incentives kick in at 50k in sales. Hawkeye seems to be selling around 35k copies.

This is just plain awesome. Nice way for Matt to try to do something with his blue-collar hero that we all know Hawkeye would want. Thanks Matt!

This is fun more people should be reading. It is great fraction helping people with it. As someone who was effected but not as bad some people I love the help to those who are in need. There are no with no power or no heat right now or living in shelters because homes are gone/destroyed. My mom works as real state agent and can tell you how bad keystone, nj was hit. Any bit can help right now.

  11. Supermutant Says:

Keensburgh (?), nj even. Sorry keep mixing up the name.

I hate to be cynical, but this feels like publicity or promotional stunt. If he’s such a great guy, he’d start one of those web-pool things in which he pledges to match so many pennies on every dollar until he reaches the limit he can afford.

The above wouldn’t make such a great headline for Marvel comics, though.

  13. Chris Says:

Disney, aka Marvel, has already donated $2,000,000
