When you’ve got a co-star of the third highest-grossing film of all time hosting your show, you might as well take advantage of it. Thus, the Jeremy Renner-hosted Saturday Night Live last night unsurprisingly featured an Avengers sketch, complete with Jason Sudeikis as a quip-tastic Iron Man, Taran Killam as Captain America, Bill Hader as Thor, Bobby Moynihan as the Hulk, Kate McKinnon as Black Widow, Jay Pharoah as Nick Fury, Vanessa Bayer as Maria Hill, and, yup, Renner reprising, sort of, his role as Hawkeye, justifying his place on the team. Perhaps the most superhero-heavy SNL skit since Superman’s funeral back in 1992 (“Hulk not good with words”).
So, yes, Maria Hill was depicted on Saturday Night live. Not quite “bus stop ads prominently featuring Tomar Re” surreal, but still kinda crazy. Here’s the clip:

Jeremy Renner is one of my favorite actors, and I think he did a great job on SNL the other night. I would have to say that the Avengers spoof was my favorite skit. Kate McKinnon was really good at playing Black Widow. It was a hilariously over-exaggerated way of showing how they act. I was working late the other night at DISH, so I wasn’t able to see the show live on TV. I pulled it up on DISH Online yesterday morning though, so it was nice having it available that soon. I am definitely looking forward to seeing Jeremy Renner in his new movies this and next year.

Not only was Maria Hill depicted on SNL, it was in a sketch featuring Cobie Smulders’ real life husband as Captain America. So that’s sort of an extra layer of meta.

Man, I remember Renner from that reality show about actors, “IT Factor.” Even then, it was clear he had the most going on (he had already filmed “Dahmer”) and that he was really serious about pursuing his career.

I wonder how Joss Whedon and Scarlett Johansson felt about Black Widow’s portrayal on SNL. I realize it’s just a comedy skit, but it kind of sets the push for strong female characters back a bit to suggest that the character of Black Widow was little more than a pretty face who threw a punch once in a while. Some people are no doubt going to say I need to loosen up, but I’m just saying…
That said, I loved the bit with Hill and Fury. I’ve always wondered how Hawkeye and Green Arrow felt about being “the bow guy” on a team of demi-gods and meta-humans, and this skit played to that pretty well.
