Yes, I'm sure that's why Graeme is going after the big 2 on the issue of variant covers. He only wants to help the industry. It's a public service really. It's not like he's some hack who likes to attack Marvel and DC to drive hits to his posts.

Don't believe me? Look no further than this very article: Graeme here is also doing his part to help the industry by hunting down quotes in interviews with DC representatives where they don't mention any other companies, linking to them, and speculating that they may be some kind of "backhanded slap" towards Marvel. Can there still be any question that this man has the health of industry as his sole driving concern?

Ziggy - I agree 100%. Not a fan of variants, so I don't buy em. I don't get people who tear their clothes and weep every time a variant is announced. Don't buy it. That goes for retailers too. Variant covers are not mandatory - if you can't move a certain number of books, don't buy them just for the variant. Sends a message to publishers and doesn't tie up your capital in books you can't sell. No whining required!

I disagree with Kyle's assertion. I think some bloggers are more concerned about having the APPEARANCE of having concern for the health of the industry.

Style being more important than substance and all that.

I think Cunningham comes across as a jerk in that interview, but I also think Vaneta dropped the ball. The question about relaunched comics and event comics could have led to a great discussion, particularly with Cunningham reacting the way he did, but Vaneta didn't have any information to support the theory, and I can't imagine it would be that hard to find.

@Ziggy I think Graeme and others have a problem with variants exactly because it's a problem for retailers. The concern is for the health of the industry. Retailers are in the trenches, so anything that's harder for them has the potential to damage the industry.

Wow. LOL. That other interview that is linked to this article is seriously facinating; I'm somewhat uncomfortable for both the interviewer and the 2 dudes... Cunningham seems to really come across has harsh and dismissive, which I'm sure isn't the case- I hope- in person. If anything, I would have put in some effort of rounding things up at the end with a more positive spin if I was DC- good grief, if it wasn't for sites like Newsarama, we wouldn't have a clear clue of what you're even doing. And you know what? Speculation is fun- don't diss the gossip that keeps chatter going on your products, dummies :). Sometimes, it's the only interesting "news" out there.

Ziggy I think you have to understand the history of variant covers and other gimmicks that almost destroyed the comic community. Anyone who has been reading comics for awhile (Which is the majority of people which is another problem lol) can see things creepily cycling again.

I know the problems they cause for retailers. I get why retailers don't like them. I mentioned right up there that they're annoying from a retailer's perspective. But Graeme isn't a retailer and 90% of the people who proclaim them the devil of the comic industry in blog comments are not retailers. My question is why THOSE people care so much.

"Yes, please, any publisher that wants to pull back on variant covers, that’d be great, thank you very much."

Can someone please explain to me why people (not just Graeme. Anyone) who don't like variants care so strongly about whether or not publishers make variants?

I don't like variants. At all. I think they're stupid, pointless, and very annoying from a retailer's perspective. But I find myself constantly defending them because they have ZERO effect on my buying or reading experience. I simply don't buy them.

Whether a book has 1 variant or 52. Whether it's on 1 title or 100. My experience is exactly the same as I just grab a book off the shelf and pay for it. So why isn't that everyone's experience who doesn't like variants? Where is the motivation to be like "please stop thank god!"?
