Slott Reveals SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN Secrets at NYCC Retailer Breakfast

October 11th, 2012
Author Graeme McMillan

Dan Slott apparently spoiled his own Amazing Spider-Man story at today’s pre-NYCC retailer breakfast. Click through for the spoiler, because I’m not ruining it for everyone.According to Bleeding Cool,

He stated that Peter Parker would not be the Spider-Man in Superior Spider-Man that replaces Amazing Spider-Man.

This doesn’t mean that Parker is off the table, however; Slott also revealed that Peter would get back together with Mary Jane in the new series, so he’s clearly still part of the new status quo. So… Alpha is the Spider-Man, do you think…?

    UUMM. this just got interesting.

  2. Supermutant Says:

Why for the love of stan lee and Jack Kirby do you do idiot stuff like this Marvel? Why? Bleeding Cool is saying spider-man and mj would be together and not peter and mj. Which makes no sense. Of course replacing peter as spider-man MAKES NO SENSE! Yeah replacing him with the dumb side kick. That really going to get fans to reading spider-man and then side kick still his wife. That is going to get fans like me who stopped reading back after OMD. Yeah.

“This doesn’t mean that Parker is off the table, however; Slott also revealed that Peter would get back together with Mary Jane in the new series, so he’s clearly still part of the new status quo.”

The only thing is, the Bleeding Cool article words it like this:

“And Spider-Man will get back together with Mary Jane Watson. But it will not be Peter Parker Spider-Man.”

Which makes it sound like Mary Jane will be in a relationship with this new Spider-Man who is not Peter. Which, given how Slott has been ship-teasing her and Peter getting back together and her still being in love with Peter doesn’t make any sense–unless she only thinks she’s dating Peter and that he’s still Spider-Man. Which would play into the theory that’s been gaining traction that Doc Ock will take over Peter’s body which would just be…UGH!

Still, I’m thinking it could very well mean Peter and MJ do get back together but he’s not Spider-Man anymore, and the article just badly misinterpreted what Slott said. At least that would be somewhat better than the alternative.

  4. Sick2Move Says:

Alpha as the new Spider-Man? It’s going to be Miguel O’Hara, the 2099 Spider-Man. Those weird finger talons are a dead giveaway.

  5. Chris B Says:

Miles Morales in the 616. ‘Nuff said. (Just kidding, I have no idea)

  6. Mike McNulty, aka Stillanerd Says:

And now, the Newsarama staff is reporting “Marvel Comics has confirmed that Slott told retailers in attendance that the Spider-Man starring in the January-debuting series is indeed a character other than Peter Parker, and that Spider-Man and Mary Jane would be getting back together — which would mean that Peter and MJ will not be.”

So apparently, Slott WASN’T actually saying Peter and MJ would get together after all. UGH!

  7. Mike McNulty, aka Stillanerd Says:

Then again, what if the twist is the twist to this is that, technically, Spider-Man is STILL Peter Parker, only he’s been forced to give up his identity as Peter Parker for whatever reason. After all, the Daily Bugle has just outed Peter as Spider-Man’s “tech guy” which, as we saw in ASM #695, has now potentially put a huge target on his back and puts his secret identity in jeopardy. And Doc Ock figures out Peter is Spider-Man, which, of course REALLY puts him and his loved ones in danger. So maybe Peter has no choice but to make the world think he’s dead and thus is now Spider-Man all the time. That certainly would fit in with the notion that Slott will do something to Spidey “that has never been done before” in issue #700, because instead of Peter quitting as Spidey, he quits as Peter Parker. And, it fits in with the notion of the Superior Spider-Man being someone other than Peter because Peter is, technically, no longer Peter. And it fits with Mary Jane “getting back together with Spider-Man,” as well.

  8. Mike McNulty, aka Stillanerd Says:

And now the latest is that, according to Dan Slott, when he was asked about how Spider-Man and MJ would get back together if this is a new Spidey, he stated the following on his twitter:

“Cause people are getting the quote wrong. I said something VERY specific and people are paraphrasing and changing the meaning.”

  9. John Wriston Says:

Makes sense that the Scarlet Spider might take over. I don’t know if that title is selling well. Kaine is Spidey plus extra powers and aggression. His costume is red and black. Stegman is connected to him. Peter can remain a tech maker. Just spitballin’…

  10. CapCanuck Says:

Peter gives up being Spider-Man (again?) and have someone new and dark and more ruthless take over? Hmmmm, will Pete give up b/c he gets his back broken?

I have not read the whole Alpha thing yet, waiting to read from like #690 to #700 at once…

    Very nervous about this direction…

  11. Octavio Says:

thanks marvel just like i stop reading my favorite comic book when the “brand new (awful) day” started now after the skipping everything and reading the big time it get awful again

  12. curzon176 Says:

Alpha will most likely have nothing to do with the new Spider-Man. His power-set, such as it was, was nothing at all like spider-man’s own.
The theory that Spider-Man abandons his Peter Parker identity and just stays as Spider-Man, is also unlikely because Daredevil did the same thing in the late 90s. And Spider-Man himself attempted it briefly during the same period. I doubt Slott is going to rehash that and try to sell it as some grand new idea.
Scarlet Spider as the new Spider-Man has also been done! (Sensational Spider-Man anyone?) Granted it was Ben Reilly rather than Kaine, but a clone is a clone, so that’s another idea rehash.

The two suggestions i’ve read so far in these comments with any real likelihood are the Doc Ock taking over Peter’s body suggestion, (although that doesn’t explain the new Spider Powers), and the idea that Miguel O’Hara (2099 Spider-Man) becomes the new present day one. He certainly has the same finger/toe claws and that was the first thing i thought of. Maybe Peter gets time-lost or something. Who knows.

Personally, I don’t know what will happen and i don’t really have a theory that i’m most partial to. But i’m looking forward to finding out. I just hope that Peter doesn’t die. They probably won’t do that since they killed Ultimate Peter Parker recently so that would be a lame rehash too, but we shall see.

  13. Kyle Garret Says:

The current Spider-man sale on Comixology is 90% pre-Mephisto comics.

Makes me wonder if that’s connected somehow.

  14. smoked cheese Says:

Miles Morales of 616U is a white Peter Parker look-alike.

  15. Andrew M Says:

Or we could go with a more obvious idea.

People start to suspect Peter is Spidey. Peter needs to be seen in more places while Spidey is also doing his thing.
Peter calls Kaine, fresh from a cancelled book, back from Houston to fill in as Spidey in New York for a little while.
A meaner, less friendly Spidey, who seems to operate with Peter’s approval? Who else can it be?

  16. Lz8 Says:

Its true identity is Wolverine of the Michigan Wolerines

  17. jeffro Says:

    ok everyone take a breath…..

these guys know what they are doing and are having fun teasing us i think…lets see that happens in #700 before judging. I think they hare having fun with semantics.

Every time they say peter parker…put that in quotes. I think i have an idea where they are going with this but i dont want to spoil anything but just because ‘peter parker’ is no longer in the suit, it doesnt mean Peter Parker isn’t in there…catch my drift?

  18. Impulsiveboy3 Says:

I say it’s 616 Miles Morales, because at the end of Spider-Men peter googled Miles and was very surprised as what he saw, so Miles possibly stands in for him to cover up his identity since Joe Quesada screwed up the Spidey-Mythos with One More Day/Brand New Day/O.M.I.T. and his identity is no longer magically protected now that he “outed” himself during Spider-Island.

…Just a thought. but yeah Marvel seems to like screwing up Spidey sales.
