Is it just me seeing things or not but on the cover of New Avengers#2 at the tips of the fingers I see six (yellow-Reality,purple-space,Gold-time,Blue-mind,Green-soul,Red-Power)Infinity Gems. Does anyone else see them? or am I seeing things?

I disagree. Cap is there because he is the “top cop” of the U.S and commander of SHIELD. Period. Ironman is there because he was one of the original members. Reed’s Space trip is all by 5 mins, that’s how long they are gone. Sure, Black Panther should lead the NEW AVENGERS–BUT he’s the central character on a non-traditional team.

About the AVENGERS book, It’s simple math guys. First, there was ZERO chance that the movie characters were not going to be on the team. ZERO CHANCE. Marketing would not allow that even if Hickman wanted to…

…So right there you have Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Hulk, Ironman, Thor and other movie characters like Spiderman and Wolverine. That’s 8 characters out of the original size spoken of (18), now expanded to 24 roster.

That’s 8 characters right off the bat that’s shoe horned into the roster. So from there you now have non-movie rosters to look at with 12 possible female/minority characters out 16 over all characters. That’s not bad.

You have to look at it like that. It’s really 12 out of 16 characters. Because the Movie characters that are a part of multi-million dollar franchises and a billion dollar movie were not going to be left off the roster. No matter how much some folks might have wanted. That’s just reality.

If you include Manifold (minority), Sunfire (minority), Shang Chi (minority, Falcon (minority), Captain Marvel (female). I think this is a step in the right direction.

I have to agree with Kenny on this one. It’s easy to say people are reading too much into the “12 out of 22″ statement when you aren’t a female or minority, but when you do fit into that category, you’re left feeling like these guys are now resorting to picking through scraps. Honestly Hickman could have picked any character he wanted and I would have been fine, but making a public announcement that a new line up meant to look like “the real world” (but not really though) feels more separatist rather than inclusive.

Well I don’t like the concept that much. Why does it need Cap and Iron Man? Cap is on Uncanny Avengers and Avengers. Let Black Panther led this team. How is Reed here when he’s in space in Fantastic Four? I don’t care who’s white, black or female. But when you do it for that reason it seems wrong. Too many people are on too many teams and solo books a month. Know who else would be a good team leader and a step up for him? Spiderman. He did pretty good with his little team in Ends of the Earth.

Also, in terms of arguing over quotas and percentages, who cares? I think some folks are taking that “looks like the world” thing a little too literally. It’s about creative choices too. If Hickman wants to have an Avengers roster that’s 50/50 in that department, let him. This isn’t an exact science and I highly doubt Hickman meant those words to be translated into an equation of exact ratios and proportions.

I think it’s important to put a focus on diversity, as long as it’s made to seem like it’s a corporately mandated thing. Frankly there’s tons of characters that are just awesome and (happen to be a minority) that would make great Avengers. Black Panther and Storm to me are no brainers as Avengers. Between T’challa’s intelligence and fighting skills and Storm’s power set why wouldn’t you want them on a team? Sabra has potential too. Believe it or not, as a teenager, I always wasted to see Blade and Cable on the Avengers (Cable isn’t a minority per say, but I like the idea of him and Blade together). Of course these ideas are predicated on the notion that this is done for altruistic and creative reasons not corporate money mongering reasons.

Yes, Ash Talon, really. As I said, I think it’s too bad that they’ve had to specifically address the make up of the team. And I think it’s great that they’ll have some diversity on the team. But saying the team is going to “look like the world” is a very bold statement. My point isn’t that the team should change to fit a quota system based on race or gender but that there should be some self-awareness and thought about what a phrase like that really entails. I don’t think a writer has a moral imperative to make sure that the characters proportionately represent different groups of people, but I also don’t think a writer should be necessarily proud of inclusiveness or equal representation when 45% of the team members are white males.

I agree Kenny. If characters are cool and fit in to a plot then all is well. If they are tossed in because the vocal majority calls for it well then go jump off a cliff.

Sorry, but I find it refreshing that they’re trying to make the Avengers have a membership that is more diverse (of the entire Marvel Universe including sex, race, and mini-verses) than previous line-ups. I’m not going to play the nitpicking number game and accuse them of getting their percentages wrong.

I’m on board with Now!, except for their new angle on covers. Would love to see covers go back to using a clearly identifiable logo and layout.
I’m one that likes to pick thru boxes at comic shows, these new covers are going to make that a nightmare a couple years from now.

I like Hickman, and I’m interested in the final lineup, but 12 out of 22 characters being “female or a minority” does not look like the world — that would imply that over half of the world is made up of white males. I think it’s a shame that so much of the relaunch has become a number’s game about inclusivity, but Marvel should have seen that coming with their promo materials. And since it did become an issue and Marvel has felt the need to address it in the media, they should at least be honest about it. If it actually looked like the world, half of the team would be female and only 3 or 4 of the characters would be white.

What is the Omega effect? No one asked that question. Is it the return of Omega Man? If New Avengers are clandestine, maybe that should include a representative from all areas of Marvel. Eternals, Deviants, Asgardia, Olympus group, street level. I say Athena, Kro, Sif, Amedous Cho and Daredevil and or Iron Fist.

I wonder what will become of Daredevil, Iron Fist, Thing, Captain Britain, Valkyrie, Quicksilver, Jocasta and Tigra, Mockingbird and if Venom will still be part of the team.
Would like to see Defenders become the Secret Avengers.
I also see Sabra, Union Jack, Spitfire, Toro, Namora and Gorilla Man join.
Also return of Black Knight.
