DC Has “Legal Issues” With Milestone Characters?

October 1st, 2012

This is one of those things that you see and go “…Huh.” in response:

When asked whether there was a chance of seeing Static Shock in “Teen Titans,” Lobdell replied, “Nothing would make me happier.” However, he said “legal issues” prevent the characters from joining the title.

“Legal issues”? Has the 2008 license for DC to use the characters lapsed, perhaps? Or is something else going on? Unless I’m misremembering, Milestone characters had been in DC Comics fairly continuously in various books (Justice League of America, The Brave and The Bold, Teen Titans, Xombi and Static Shock) from the announcement until Static Shock was cancelled; was there some kind of continuous use clause in there that allowed for the characters to appear in DC books?

I’ve gotten the impression since the DC relaunch that Lobdell doesn’t always know what he’s talking about.

……. sort reminds me of the author of this blog but then that has been going on since well before the relaunch

Milestone characters will carry extra royalty payments, which may put a publisher off, but that’s all. I think Scott is talking about that, “contractual” issues rather than legal ones. As in DC, doesn’t want to pay more than they have to.

Personally I think Milestone’s basically giving a response to the whole Rozum/McDaniel situation that happened when Static Shock came out and they’re making sure to stand by Rozum and in some way “punish” DC for McDaniel, the editor, and the fact that they were not only unaware of the situation but when they found out about, didn’t do anything about it (as far as we know).

I hope that Static Shock get his own title again along with his own animated series again. I am surprised that Milestone and DC Comics didn’t made a live action movie. I just hope whatever the problem that stop DC using Static Shock will clear up real soon. Static Shock and Superboy would be the perfect teamup in the near future.
