How The Name Retcon Sausage Is Made

Wondering what was going on with the revelation that Tim Drake’s name isn’t actually Tim Drake, in this week’s Teen Titans #0? Scott Lobdell reveals how that came about, over at CBR:

After I finished the script and I believed it was sent off to the printers, I got a text from Editorial saying, “Loved the witness protection thing. We think it works better if we reveal Drake was never has last name. Took care of it.”

Now, some writers fly into a rage when their work is rewritten — and it only rarely ever happens to me! — but I thought, “Okay, I can see that. I can see all the potential for future storylines that can come from that, mysteries that ultimately need to be revealed.”

So in some ways, I was as surprised by the last page as everyone else who read it. I dig it.

But it is still a soft reboot…
Sad that the entire No Man’s Land storyline never happened.

Wow, that would piss me off. It’s one thing when people ask you to re-write something, but Editorial re-writing it for you, with your name on the cover alone. Wow.

Keep the talent happy, DC. Good on Lobdell for not “flying into a rage.” He’s a better man than I.

Stuff like this. Stuff that didn’t need to be change or fixed. Just to change for the sake change. I mean really we Tim last name not be Drake or him always Red Robin even though that makes no sense. Why fix something that wasn’t broken.

My main problem was not having Tim deduce who Batman is. I do enjoy his parents being alive though, having Barry Allen become a tragic figure is what annoyed me with his reboot even if it was before the new 52. I like that Tim is still someone doing good to do good. I still think a solo series of him would be better than anytime someone wants to do a bat book crossover having to use or ignore the titans, but seeing as their adventures haven’t been anything special I guess it’s alright.

Further confirmation that I am not missing anything with the New 52, these are not the characters I want to read about.

thankfully the DC Dark books seems to be ignored enough by DC micro-management that they’re still worth reading.
