So, Brian Smith, the DC editor that suddenly rocketed to attention when he apparently drove Rob Liefeld to leave the publisher, is himself leaving DC this week:
Last day at DC this Friday! Good times, learned a LOT (good and bad). Back to freelance and creator owned comics for me.

He later clarified that he was “not fired, didn’t quit [and] not being escorted out of the building. Standard two weeks notice, no drama of any kind,” for those wondering if this was related to Liefeld’s attempts to name and shame him last month. Perhaps it’s because he was robbed of such a “victory” that led to this classy response to the news. Oh, Rob.

I get what he’s putting across, that the departure was amicable, but if you don’t get fired, you’re quitting. How long was he part of the company, even?

It’s like david st. hubbins; she’s not his girlfriend and she’s not his wife.
i’m no liefeld fan to be sure, but i hate when things go down like this. i can just see the corporate thinking involved. “well, we have to defend our editor, can’t let the talent run wild. so rob’s gotta go. but as soon as we we can, we’ll s-can smith”

Not to argue semantics, but because he legally “quit” his job, doesn’t mean he threw up his hands and “quit” working at DC. There is a degree of implied difference. He voluntarily left in order to work in other areas of the field.

Rob Liefeld is a giant baby.

The whole issue is the timing of it.

Brian has been getting a lot of attention for his indie work on books like the NY Times bestselling Stuff of Legend and his self-drawn comic Intrepid Escapegoat. This departure from DC could be a by-product of just having too much to do as a freelancer.

And Rob Liefeld is STILL a giant baby.

Thank you, Vaneta.

I think it is pretty clear that what is “happening” at DC isn’t only Rob’s ability or inability to work with editors. There have been many other creators leaving their respective books complaining about the same issues Rob brought up; it just so happens Rob is the only person brave enough to bring it to light. I am a Liefeld fan for the record.

@ Frankie… I would have gone with ‘douche’ but ‘baby’ works too.
@Justhowitis… name 3. And by 3, I mean creators who weren’t working on books that were universally considered sub-par.
