Bleeding Cool has a very unexpected name being attached to Warner Bros’ Justice League movie, thanks to what sounds like a very awkward undercover comic store incursion by some WB marketing people:
The biggest give away for the [comic store] staff was when they asked what impact films had on comics sales. The staff replied that it was very little, unless it was an unknown character. Their immediate response was “Oh, like Jonah Hex” which didn’t fit with the rest of their limited knowledge – and they didn’t seem aware that the Green Lantern and Jonah Hex movies were not well regarded.
The staff explained how Marvel could make a movie out of any character but because it would tie into the bigger picture, it stood a greater chance of success. The interlopers were really interested in what obscure characters there were realated to the league… and then they asked the big one.
“What would fan reaction be to a Justice League movie with Frank Miller’s name attached?”
Oh, wow.
On the one hand, you can definitely understand Warners’ excitement about getting the guy who did The Dark Knight Returns and Sin City to do their big superhero movie. On the other, that’s also the guy behind Holy Terror and The Spirit movie. Potential for complete and utter disaster: Vast. Then again, they also put the guy who did Watchmen and Sucker Punch in charge of Man of Steel…

They weren’t WB researchers; they were Men In Black (original, not Will Smith variety), trying to understand this crazy concept of “super hero movies.”

Yes, the greatest way to seal with the stigmas against comic books would be to put Frank Miller, a writer renowned for racism, misogyny and homophobia, to the flagship title.
I understand DC wants there superhero movies to be distinct from the Marvel movies, but going from Joss Whedon, who can at least write in non-purple prose and not from a place where he seems to condemn everyone non-Straight Christian White Male to being evil or meaningless, to Frank Miller, who has all of those excesses in his current writing style, would be simply ugly. Frank Miller has always been a worse writer than people give him credit for.
Here’s what we can expect from a Miller-driver JL: BatMAN will SOLVE evERything. With bizARRE EMphasis and fascISM. Wonder Woman will only exist to make sexy poses and be a fetish object. Superman will be a milquetoast and ineffectual figure of non-existence. Green Lantern will be an unbelievable idiot. Cyborg will turn evil (’cause he’s black) (alternatively, they’ll use Martian Manhunter who will be played as black and turn evil, ’cause he’s played as black). The Flash will just kind of, sort of, be there.
Frank Miller is about as good of a writer as Rob Liefeld, but with even less respect for non-Straight White Christian Males.

Sin City and 300 were great so I’m ok on that.
God forbid we have some wishy washy liberal crap were every character not white has to be a paragon of virtue because otherwise that would be racist. But I guess it’s well known all the evil in the world is perpetrated soey by single white males.
Heaven help us that a film/comic might actually reflect real life events and actually for once have a muslim be a terroist.

You guys, this story is 100% fake. I PROMISE.

Maybe it is a diversion, so when they announce the Michael Bay JLA, it won’t seem so bad.
September 25th, 2012 at 11:40 am
Considering the last JLA rumor had the brothers from the matrix movies and speed racer on board, this is a step up.

@Michael
Are you trolling, or just an idiot? How is someone who’s only directorial experience is the critical and box office bomb “The Spirit” a step up from the visionary directors of the Matrix Trilogy and Cloud Atlas?

“You guys, this story is 100% fake. I PROMISE.”
I promise you it is not.

Ooh, a promise from Rich Johnston. That’s worth its weight in…well, something that doesn’t weigh very much.
September 26th, 2012 at 12:43 am
Really? When have I ever promised something and not delivered?

Hold on, Rich, let me finish watching the latest adventure of Patterson Joseph as the 11th Doctor and reading these Bulldog Comics.
