While I’m sure that plays a part in it, it’s worth mentioning that the quality of 2012′s new comics by Image, Dark Horse and IDW has been astonishingly high and they’ve deservedly got the word of mouth/internet buzz in their favour.

For people like me who were always buying indie comics as well as mainstream titles 2012 has left us spoilt for choice and I can’t say Image have stopped me from buying self published or small press comics. There’s also the kickstarter/indiegogo model to factor in – they don’t even get counted by the conventional stats.

But yes, you’re right – Image, IDW and Dark Horse are categorically relatively large publishers.

I think Image, IDW, and Dark Horse are probably better described as the largest, mainly creator owned companies, as opposed to mid-sized publishers. I think that’s why they’re growing. People who are just now looking to creator owned comics aren’t sure where to go, so they go to publishers they’ve heard of.

Seems like skewed data to me if you’re not gonna point out Walking Dead #100 selling about 320,000 units more than it normally does.
