Yes, This Is Still 2012

July 25th, 2012

I love that this is actually a headline on a newspaper’s website:

It’s from here, a commentary blog by Geno Carter that immediately reassures non-comic readers that, hey, all those cliches you’ve heard about guys who read comics? Totally not true:

I’m 43 years old and I love comic books. I have a great job, I don’t have any bodies buried in my back yard, I have even gone on dates with actual women. I’m here to say that it’s cool to read comic books.

When will this segregation against comic-book loving murderers who go on dates with fake women end?!?

reading one, no. buying one, yes.

Lucky, that he made no mention of playing video games.

Yeah, not like… you know… those role gamers.

Wow. I didn’t know people still play those old tabletop games. I thought stuff like HeroClix had gone bankrupt or something. Do people still play D&D when you can just as easily login and play Neverwinter, or World of Warcrack, or any of the free-to-play games?

Sorry, I’ve been out of touch with that world of geekdom for a couple of decades.

I have been an off and on again comic fan for over 30 years. I hold a B.S. and an M.A. and work as a high school special education teacher. I am also the father of a special needs child. In the past few years I have used comics to get students who are not interested in reading to read. The combination of art and word seems to work wonders and students respond. My daughter has leapt 3 years in reading in one year since she started reading comics regularly. There are always comics to read in Mr.C’s room.
    Comics are not for losers.
