Whither DC Creators?

June 13th, 2012

A random thought about the temporary changes in creative teams for DC’s New 52 books during September’s “zero month”: I wonder how many “regular” creators of the affected series will return for October? After all, if there’s one thing we know by now about the New 52, it’s that creative churn is part of the process – Of the 42 titles that’ll make it past a year of publication, 14 have seen significant changes to their creative teams (ie, at least one of the originally announced regular creators being replaced on the book for whatever reason) – as DC tries to finetune its attempt to get each book “right.” While Judd Winick may not be the new writer of Green Arrow after writing #0, does that mean that Ann Nocenti will still be with the book on #13? Gregg Hurwitz may not be taking over the writing duties of Detective Comics aside from #0, but will Tony Daniel still be the sole writer come October…? I guess we have a month until the next round of solicits to speculate…

Here’s how things have changed for at least character and one writer…

Upon seeing that Judd Winick was writing GA 0, I was glad. Even though I soon remembered than his last run on GA was a mess. But right now, I am liking his work a lot and right GA is a worse mess than it was then. Funny how some things get better and some don’t.

In the still relatively-early days of the DC New 52, I also wonder what the “storylines end with issue #12 before ‘anniversary event month’” portends for the line ongoing. Has DC decided to take a “seasons” approach to their titles, where every title runs one or two stories over twelve issues and then takes a breather and offers a jumping-on point? No disagreement with that, but it would seem that’s the way it’s going and I’m curious if that turns out true once we have another year or two under our belts.
