The surprise ending of Avengers vs. X-Men #5 has proven one thing: The Phoenix Force apparently has no fashion sense whatsoever. Spoilers for those who haven’t read it and have, somehow, avoided spoilers until now.If you’ve clicked through, then chances are you already know that Cyclops, Colossus, Magik, Emma Frost and Namor all ended up with the Phoenix Force as the result of Tony Stark’s attempt to destroy it in the most recent issue of AvX; it’s like when the Worthy ended up with their hammers, in that (a) it creates alternate versions of the characters that ultimately bodes ill, and (b) said alternate versions have far, far uglier costumes. I mean, seriously – look at Cyclops’ new look here:
He’s now got a bright red thong. Somehow, that seems even worse than whatever the hell has happened to Emma’s outfit (Although you can’t help but feel as if she’s going to be the more embarrassed one afterwards. “I had ultimate power and you let me go out the house dressed like that, darling…?”).
We shouldn’t be too surprised, of course. After all, as well-designed as Jean Grey’s original Phoenix costume was – RIP, Dave Cockrum, who made costume design look far more graceful and easier than it is – the Phoenix is also historically responsible for this look:
But still… Cyclops has a bright red flame thong now. For that alone, I think we all have to agree that Avengers vs. X-Men is clearly the greatest Marvel event since Secret Wars II and the Beyonder’s Michael Jackson hair.

Graeme, you have stumbled upon an opportunity for Marvel AR. The stars from What Not to Wear or Tim Gunn could critique the various AvX costumes. If it is popular enough, it could be a regular feature like Newsarama’s Agent of S.T.Y.L.E. column.

Other than the thong, which is admittedly terrible; I kind of like Cyclops new threads. He looks like he’s in Gatchaman or something and the fanboy in me likes that.

I am just astonished that even with the phoenix power Cyclops still cannot control his eye beams without a visor. Really?!
Also what happens when Colossus uses the Juggernaut power while he has this phoenix power?

@Ben – Mmm…five Gatchaman, five Phoenix hosts. Will Marvel release an infinite comic called Cosmic Mutant Team Phoenix!
@justsaying – I wondered about the same thing after reading the issue.

That was the most groanworthy crap, literally makes no sense whatsoever considered outside the context of “WE GOTS TO SELL TOYS”

Well…Cyclops has never really been known for his fashion sense. But I agree, poor Emma is going to never live this down.

Emma’s would be so much better if instead of skin it was a white body suit, matches her more and offer’s a nice contrast to Cyclops’ black suit

I don’t know what you’re talking about. Those outfits are only FABLISS!!!
Red thongs over black leather are all the rage on the the catwalks!
If nothing else, be lucky that Scott didn’t end up with Emma’s costume. It would be like Borat all over again!
