Speculation: Bendis’ Post-Avengers Plans Partially Revealed?

May 10th, 2012
Author Graeme McMillan

Well, thanks to the end of Avengers Assemble #3 (as released yesterday), looks like we have a better idea of what Bendis’ post-Avengers project is going to be. Spoilers for the comic and the movie, everyone (copious white space left to protect those avoiding such things).

In time to coincide with the movie, AA #3 resurrected this guy:

Thanos was last seen in the Thanos Imperative mini-series that ended Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s rein as Marvel’s Comic Czars, being trapped in the Cancerverse with Nova and Star-Lord. We’ve already seen a Nova in Avengers vs. X-Men, with Tom Brevoort being particularly cagey about whether or not said Nova was the Ultimate Spider-Man character Sam Alexander or the original, Richard Rider; given the reappearance of Thanos, it’s looking very likely that the post-Avengers project that Bendis has mentioned would be hinted at in AA is going to be a Guardians of the Galaxy reboot… which, possibly, signals that mention of a GotG movie heralds that project’s official announcement soon (The team also showed up on Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes this past weekend. Holy synergy!). All that’s left is to wait for Star-Lord’s reappearance, I guess…

UPDATE: Tom Brevoort talked Thanos on Marvel.com: “More than simply bringing him back, this storyline will be setting him up for bigger things that are just off on the horizon—it’s the first step towards something we’ve been working on behind the scenes for a while now.”

  1. Sal fan Says:

Cannot wait for anything to do with GotG or Nova!

  2. Sean R-B Says:

Gosh, that is some crappy dialog for Thanos. Bendis is great at street level, common man stuff. Just look at his writing in ALIAS and about the first two thirds of POWERS. But, man, he just doesn’t have a knack for majestic, cosmic, quasi-melodramatic dialog that is required for characters like Thanos or the various Asgardians.

  3. Brian Says:

I’m now starting a pool on the odds of #4 opening with Thanos and the Zodiac crowd sitting around a, no listen to me, let me finish*, sitting around a table, talking about things and stuff. And how hot Dt Strange’s ex is.

*Yes, I’m aware no one actually interrupted me, but if it’s good enough for my namesake, it’s good enough for me :)

  4. Mechagamera Says:

    Brian,

That is a sucker bet. The real question is how many issues it will take them to stop talking, get away from the Zodiac table (from Ikea), and actually do some evil. I am guessing it won’t happen until issue 6, so there is something to put in the trade.

  5. Rod Lee Says:

You guys having me laughing at work darn it. Bendis is the king of padding comics.

  6. durkadurka Says:

Guardians of the Galaxy. Bring it back. Make it a movie. Make the movie good. That is all.

  7. Frank Says:

I would LOVE to see more Guardians of the Galaxy. With DnA writing it.

  8. turkish101 Says:

I’m a little confused how anyone could draw the conclusion that Bendis is doing GotG just because he’s using Thanos as a villain… Thanos, who also appeared in the movie whose fans AA seems to be catering to… not that it’s impossible or even improbable, it just seems like sort of a stretch at this point.

If he’s leaving Avengers, it seems like Bendis would go to another big property, like (616) Spider-man or some X-book or something… then again, he wouldn’t be on Spider-man while still doing Ultimate, most likely…

  9. Hypestyle Says:

who are the people in the background?

if there is a new cosmic GOG team, then Pulsar/Monica Marvel should be a part of it, for sure..

  10. Scruffy Says:

A new GoTG series? I’m all for it. I loved that book and Nova and thought they got cancelled unfairly.

  11. genesis Says:

Love Bendis, but if he wrote the movie script we’d have to wAit until the 3rd movie in the trilogy for them to move from the table. And at least a 3rd to halfway through that movie at that

  12. BrendanSilent Says:

huge bendis fan and even i have to admit that the dialog in this page is cringe-worthy. sounds like it was written 30 years ago.

  13. Hutchimus Says:

At least no one on THAT page is saying, “No, duh.”

  14. Ivan Says:

Can’t wait for Luke Cage and Jessica Jones to join the GotG

  15. Paul Allen Says:

Only in Bendis’ mind would Guardians of the Galaxy be “so much more” than taking over the X-Men.

Unless, of course, he’s doing both…

  16. erik Says:

why would writing Ultimate Spider-Man make it unlikely that bendis would write normal spider-man??? Brian Wood is doing that exact same thing right now (or will be) with Ultimate X-Men and X-Men

  17. Joe Murfle Says:

“Because of that I will end your world”. I think Thanos is going to obliterate the 616 Universe and cause a New 52-stle reboot, which will be Bendis’s next big project. How much bigger can you get than re-shaping the entire Marvel U?

  18. Dan Says:

Dear God, please don’t let Bendis head up a GotG or ANY Cosmic books. Bring back DnA. Let Remender do it. But not Bendis. He has no concept of what it means for a comic to be “cosmic”.

  19. fain Says:

Did Brevoort say they’re setting Thanos up for “Bigger things on the horizon”?

What’s bigger than the Infinity Gauntlet? I mean…he *killed* the *entire* UNIVERSE. How can he go bigger?

  20. Michael Says:

Darkseid was so awesome, he has to fit in two universes ;)

  21. Sigh Says:

I can’t believe how bad the dialog was in this issue, especially for Thor and Thanos.

  22. sniperboy Says:

I wish they would bring Ron Lim back on some this cosmic stuff. I saw him doing some Thanos and Silver Surfer sketches at WonderCon that were amazing. I didn’t think the artwork on the last couple Guardians of the Galaxy story arcs hasn’t been up to snuff.

Darkseid?? No way. Check out this awesome sketch of Thanos vs. Darkseid.

  23. Reth Sogen Says:

So not only is Bendis banking on Whedon’s post-credits scene for his next story, but he’s also doing so by implementing the most cheesy dialogue he can conjure. Good job, Bendis… you’re a brilliant writer.

  24. Joshua Says:

I don’t know how you infer anything of Bendis’ future from this series… seriously, what universe is it even in? They claimed 616, yet that’s clearly not the 616 Hulk. They should make Bendis write a damned Power Man and Iron Fist book, and keep him away from the larger scale titles for a while.

  25. David M Says:

If you want to see how he worked best this decade look back at how he was written in Annihilation.
Also Death rejected him so why is he the warrior of someone who rejected him. It seems they are ignoring everything that has been done with him in the last few years.

  26. Kyle Says:

I like Bendis just fine, but I agree with most of the people on here that he needs to stay away from the Cosmic side of things. I really thought they would let DnA come back to it if they ever wanted to continue GotG, but barring that I’d settle for Hickman — his handling of Galactus and The Inhumans in F4 and FF prove he’s got the chops for stories on that scale.

  27. Bryant Says:

Bit of a stretch on the whole lead up to a new GotG, but I wouldn’t say no to a movie.
Also gotta agree with everyone here, Bendis shouldn’t be in charge of Cosmic anything.

  28. BitBiteOuch Says:

I figure since Hickman is leaving his F4/FF duties, Bendis would go there. Or did news pop that someone else was taking over?

  29. Beezow Doo-Doo Zopittybop-Bop-Bop Says:

You have made a post. And you have posted an image, a picture, of Thanos. For this- this- th– Listen. For these sins and all of your arrogance and crazy– for these and this world’s sins, I, THANOS, will kill all of you.
    DIALOGUE!

  30. Beezow Doo-Doo Zopittybop-Bop-Bop Says:

SPLASH PAGE (this is your action scene)

  31. Leocomix Says:

That’s a Thanos robot or clone, he doesn’t sound like the real one.
As for the GotG I love Yondu, Vance, Nikki, Charlie, Martinex, etc. Let’s see some Steve Gerber love.

  32. A3 Says:

i thought the last time we saw Thanos was when The Hood found all the infinity gems which lead him straight to Thanos.

So shouldn’t Thanos be wearing the full infinity gauntlet next time we see him?

  33. bryceharper Says:

Please leave DnA out of this. They whole cancerverse thing made very little sense and they had plenty of time to play with the cosmic entities after multiple comsic events. Rather have Starlin come back but then the world would be perfect and I’d be a millionaire.

  34. sniperboy Says:

A3, the Thanos from that Avengers story was an illusion created by Dr. Strange to delay the Hood for the Avengers’ arrival. It should be noted that recently Dr. Doom has recovered an Infinity Gauntlet from the corpse of a Reed Richards from another reality. (See recent issues of the Fantastic Four) Whether this Infinity Gauntlet functions in our reality awaits to be seen.

  35. chris Says:

I love GoTG but if bendis’ writting then I am not reading

  36. Audry Says:

Spoilers for the comic and the movie, everyone (copious white space left to protect those avoiding such things).
