Marvel and ComiXology Go Exclusive

May 8th, 2012

Marvel goes digital exclusive (for single issues) with ComiXology:

Marvel fans will enjoy continued access to single-issue digital comics via the Marvel apps available for Apple iOS and Android, as well as the new web-based Marvel Comics Shop, all powered by comiXology. Marvel comics can also be found on the comiXology platform available on Apple iOS, Android, Kindle Fire and comixology.com.

I’ll admit, I thought that Marvel already was digital-singles exclusive with ComiXology, but this is the change that’ll interest most people:

In addition, starting today, Marvel’s digital comics will be available through comiXology’s Digital Storefronts for brick-and-mortar retailers.

Me, I’ve got fingers crossed that this might mean that Marvel will finally adopt a “$1 price drop after four weeks of release” policy for day-and-date books.

Marvel has a different tactic. They drop the price of selected price-parity books to $1.99, regardless of original price, but I’m not sure if there’s a pattern yet. So far we’ve seen Fear Itself, the first arc of the latest Cap series, the Death of Spider-Man issues of Ult Spider-Man, the DNA Iron Man/Thor mini, X-Men Schism, and others drop back.

I’m not sure that all of those were same-day releases, but they definitely the same price as print copies when originally released.

I’ll cross my fingers, too. This is why I buy more DC and Image books on comiXology than I do Marvel. Their books are more expensive and take forever to drop in price. I LOVE their Monday and Friday sales, though. It’s not often that I miss one without buying anything.

Marvel price drops seem to (loosely) coincide with the release of trades. It’s not same-day as the trade’s release, but all the price drops I’ve seen are books already collected, at least in hardcover, and only up to the issues collected within.

The price drop is what I am waiting for. I refuse to spend $3.99 on a Marvel comic when I can get DC and others for 2.99 or 1.99. I’m hoping for the price drop because I enjoy Marvel more that DC overall.

Digital comics should never have been priced the same , so i can’t praise for still not doing their job properly for the sake of a dying dinosaur retail system .

Thank you Ziggy B for pointing that out about the price drop coming about the time the trades come out. I had never noticed that before.

I like DC’s 2$ price point on books. At that point I am willing to take a chance and see if I like a book. If I do I tend to buy the entire run.

3$ for back issues unless they are supersized is too much to try a book. Especially when you can wait and get the paperback trades for cheaper to catch up.

3$ for a new issue isn’t bad. I think everyone but Marvel figured out what people are willing to pay. Its no wonder he got fired for misreading his customers habits.
