This exchange over at Tom Brevoort’s Formspring catches my eye:
“Everyone involved [in Avengers vs. X-Men] seems to have forgotten that it wasn’t ACTUALLY Jean Grey who sacrificed herself in the original Dark Phoenix Saga. Has that been re-retconned?” – You: “Yes, many years ago.” When did that happened? Can you give me issue or something?
I’m sure one of the folks online here can point to the specific issues, but it was revealed in CLASSIC X-MEN and Grant’s NEW X-MEN run, among other places.
As an old-school X-fan who dropped off the franchise somewhere around #250 of Uncanny way back when (And then came back for Morrison’s NewXMen), I’m curious about this: The Dark Phoenix Saga was Jean again? I have a vague memory of it being a Jean-and-Phoenix-created clone for all intents and purposes because the real Jean was too burned up from radiation damage, but hardcore X-fans! What’s the story here? And if the DPS happened with the real Jean, how was her X-Factor-era return retconned to make sense? Fill me in, please?
(While I’m asking for story help from the hardcore X-fans, I’ll throw in another one that’s bothering me about AvX: Has there ever been a story that makes sense of Scott’s belief that the Phoenix is the mutant messiah? His intense belief that its arrival can only be good seems at odds with a man whose experience of it includes his wife dying twice because of it…)

Gee Tyler, in your rush to try and be a snarky twit you gave a search whose first result includes this: “The X-Men survived but Jean seemed changed, her powers amplified to a huge degree, and she became known as PHOENIX, a powerful entaty that was sworn to protect the gallaxy.Over the next few months, Xavier became concerned with her boosted powers, and Eventually the
DARK PHOENIX surfaced and went on a rampage.” Well done! And not at all helpful!

Uh oh. My response seems to be awaiting moderation while Newsarama decides if my use of the f word is appropriate. I’ll provide the edited version, substituting the word Lollipops instead:
“Gee Aaron, in your rush to be a holier-than-thou comic book guy you’ve forgotten that i am completely out of LOLLIPOPS to give.”
Enjoy being a humorless bore with a crappy website!!!

I remember that Jean got all the memories from the Dark Phoenix Saga time, so you remembered her and scott being all in lurve. But that’s all i know!

Do us a favor Aaron, be a little MORE serious.

Was it Jean or wasn’t it Jean: that’s one of my (many) problems with the book.
Another one: When did Tony Stark decide to start monitoring for Phoenix Force manifestations? Is there an issue of a series where this monitoring started?
The whole mishigas smacks of typical Bendis bending characters to fit his plot.
