Don’t Pay Attention To The Alien Behind The Curtain (Oh, Go On Then…)

Those aliens in the Avengers movie? They’re not important, according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige:

Truthfully, they are Loki’s army and what is most important about them is that they are Loki’s army… The notion of Skrulls and Kree and the amount of speculation — the great thing about the fans just want to know everything they don’t know. They wanted to fill in the blank, and that blank wasn’t particularly important of who the aliens were; we revealed Loki a long time ago, he was the main bad guy.

Well, until they’re important, of course:

There’s a reveal at the end — the notion that Loki has made an arrangement with somebody, that somebody has provided these extremely deadly and creepy and cool aliens to fight alongside him and then to reveal who that somebody was, that’s all Joss and that was sort of the big payoff.

Yes, those two quotes really do come right after one another in the interview, amusingly enough (“What’s really important about them is this – well, really, it’s this”). Also, does this mean that we now know what the mysterious new scene shot last week is, or is that a different new scene…?

How do these two statements seem at odds with each other at all?

In the first, Feige is stating that the identity of Loki’s army in relation to their comic book counterparts (context is crucial here, Mr. McMillan) isn’t whats really important. What’s important is that they are Loki’s army. They work for the bad guy. Call em skrulls, kree, whatever. They work for Loki.

Then he states that the reveal of WHO PROVIDED said (still unimportant identity-wise) army was Joss’ idea and provides big payoff for the film.

Is this why you started blogging? To have readers point things out to you that anybody with a high school diploma can understand? Seriously, Newsarama, you can do so much better than this guy.

    What Tyler essentially said.

Feige says that in the end, the identity of the alien race is not important. What is important is the identity of the individual Loki had dealings with which is done in an after credits scene and could possibly suggest the direction of the franchise.

I saw it at one of the screenings on Saturday morning and they aren’t that important. But, the end reveal made me jump out of my seat. And there was no after credit scene so I’m sure that was what was filmed the Thursday before.

I gotta say i hate the way big movies like this (that i actually want to see; i couldn’t care less about ones i don’t, natch) are promoted these days. i mean, i’ve gone out of my way to avoid as much as possible, but it seems like they’ve released practically an hour of the movie. ok, i exaggerate, but when you think of how much of a movie is “filler” and that the stuff they released isn’t filler…

so it’s Thanos. OK, got it.
