For those of you who read yesterday’s Avengers: X-Sanction #4 and saw something that seemed curiously at odds with the pre-release publicity for Avengers vs. X-Men, things may not be what they seem. Major spoilers for X-Sanction under the jump.
So, for those who didn’t read X-Sanction #4, this happened:
Yes, that’s Hope apparently Phoenix-ing out as she cures Cable of his Techno-Organic virus.
So, if Hope can do that, then that means she is the Phoenix, right? So all the “It’s Coming” stuff is… misdirection? Another Phoenix? The Phoenix coming through time to get to Hope? Actually, according to Tom Brevoort’s Formspring, none of the above:
We’ve seen Hope flare up as Phoenix multiple times, the most recent being a book released just yesterday. She used the Phoenix to heal…. Yet, she doesn’t have it?
Yes, that is correct.
So, if Hope doesn’t have the Phoenix… then what was going on in X-Sanction #4? Because it sure looks like she does in the comic itself, and most of the fan reaction I’ve seen online suggests I’m not alone in thinking that. AvX, you got a lot of ‘splaining to do. Maybe next week’s #0 will offer some answers.

Easy…Brevoort is lying or simply doesnt know the answer and talking out of his butt.

I haven’t read the X-books since Hope returned, but my guess is that they are going to use AvX to re-define the Phoenix force, kinda like when “The Flash doesn’t run fast because of chemicals and lightning, it’s because of something called the speed force”
I seriously doubt that Marvel is pulling a “Countdown to Final Crisis” here where nothing lines up with the main book.

I kinda like Mike’s idea too.

-We’re kinda making this up as we go. What’s it to you? Cyclops gonna fight Cap, what else do you people want?

She has a sliver of the Phoenix. Just like Rachel Grey had and the sword from that Shi’ar guy. It’s just a shard not the whole thing. Her using it is probably like a beacon to the full Phoenix Force.

Were you under the impression Marvel knew what their plot was and hammered it out into a product to be proud of on all levels?

Or maybe you guys should catch up on X-men books.
Different characters have manifested the Phoenix force.

It’s the Phoenix Effect.

Stop and think for a second. Hope is a mimic. She mimics the powers of mutants. If one of those mutants happens to be the son of Phoenix (by way of genetics, if not by birth), then it’s fairly easy to see she is mimicking its power.
