What Is “So Much More” Than The X-Men…?

February 27th, 2012
Author Graeme McMillan

What is Brian Michael Bendis doing once he leaves the Avengers books later this year? A rumor that he was about to take over the X-Men books has prompted this response from the man himself:

You can take that as me sitting back and laughing my ass off. What I am doing after avx is so much more than this…

Guesses – answered, of course – later in the same Bendis Board thread include Marvelman and taking on some kind of editorial position. One of the more interesting reactions, though, was the suggestion that he is taking over the X-Books, but the “so much more” refers to what he’s doing: Either a full-scale reboot, or a Disassembled-esque linewide relaunch, both of which could be considered “so much more” than just taking over the books as-is. But, considering the X-Men books have already been relaunched less than six months ago, would it be smart to relaunch the entire line again so soon…?

  1. Marc-Oliver Frisch Says:

In a dazzling change of pace, writer Brian Michael Bendis will be following up AVENGERS VS. X-MEN with WOLVERINE AND ALL THE OTHER X-MEN VERSUS THE AVENGING AVENGERS, another deeply inspired and resonant masterpiece from the mastermind that brought you such milestones of inventive storytelling as NEW AVENGERS, MIGHTY AVENGERS, DARK AVENGERS and PRETTY DARN RAD TOO AVENGERS.

    So much more than this.

  2. David Says:

I hope to God he stays away from the X-books. Things finally seem to be good again.

  3. Cisco Kid Says:

I predict he gets a CCO position like Geoff Johns at DC or replaces a surprise retiring Joe Q.

Either way, I see BMB overseeing a Marvel wide reboot.

  4. Mo Walker Says:

I agree with Cisco Kid, I can see Bendis overseeing a line-wide Marvel reboot. Bendis’ role could be like Warren Ellis’ during the Counter-X initiative in 2000. Ellis provided the plots/vision but it was executed by other writers.

  5. Abhay Says:

My favorite kind of hype is when someone (not just Bendis– other people say it too), but when someone say something like “We’ve never told this story at Marvel before” or “I’ve never even seen Marvel tell this story before.” That’s my favorite. I don’t disbelieve that they mean it when they’re saying it, not at all. It’s just nice getting a little window into that delusion, I guess. And I think the audience probably wants to hear that from people, so I think that’s kind of cute too. It’s cute.

My favorite kind of comment is when (not just Abhay- other people say it too), but when someone say something like “That’s my favorite. It’s cute.” Not only is it condescending (to both writers AND the audience — a twofer!!), but delightfully irrelevant since no one is saying anything like that anywhere near this blog post!

Smart-aleckness aside, my favorite kind of comment is when someone responds to a gentle ribbing with a sense of humor and not angerjerkface craziness.
