A Killer Batman Who May Not Be Bruce Wayne? Holy Deja Vu…

The official DCU blog, The Source, is previewing characters from the upcoming Earth Two and Worlds’ Finest this week, starting with an oddly familiar Batman who’s described thusly:

“Who will Batman kill to save his own daughter?” asks EARTH 2 editor Pat McCallum. “Right out of the gate that should tell you we’re dealing with a different kind of Dark Knight here. More ruthless, dangerous…the costume is familiar and yeah, there is a Wayne under the mask, but we’re looking at a man desperate to save the only family he has left. EARTH 2 is about to become a very bad place to be a bad guy.”

Firstly: This isn’t the old Earth-2, obviously. Secondly: “There is a Wayne under the mask, but we’re looking at a man desperate to save the only family he has left.” Doesn’t this describe Flashpoint‘s Thomas Wayne Batman pretty well? Suddenly the preview cover looking not unlike Flashpoint‘s alternate Earth makes me wonder whether or not the new Earth-2 is going to have a lot more in common with the Flashpoint Earth of last summer than we’d first thought…

That’s too bad. There was speculation that Dick Grayson was the Earth 2 Batman, and that we’d see a world where the legacy characters take over, where time has actually moved on.

Perhaps that’s still the case, and we’re dealing with Bruce’s son (Damien?) as Batman, but I was hoping for something else.

    Actually, it probably is Damien.

    My reactions to this:

1)Oh good, another book starring Batman. Don’t have enough of those…..

2)Why is Jim Lee designing all of the new costumes, when none of them seem to make much sense?

3)Could be Thomas Wayne, but if they are doing the “Justice Society” in this book as well, could this be Damian all growed up? Dr. Hurt as an anti-hero? There are lots of possibilities here. However, if Earth 2 is the Flashpoint universe, it would be cool to see the SHAZAM kids again. Then again, it wouldn’t be “world building,” would it, as the Flashpoint Tie-ins did all that already?

Still trying to figure out if I will invest money in this title. If it’s just “Alternate JLA,” I might skip it.

  3. Paul Allen Says:

If it’s Damian and Helena is his daughter, then this has to be at least 24 years down the line from where the current DCU is (and that’s if Damain fathered her at 18, and she’s 18 now), in which case it would make no sense to for Jay and Alan to still be alive, unless they are supposed to be contemporaries of Bruce Wayne in this new continuity.

  4. Paul Allen Says:

All that said, Thomas Wayne probably makes more sense. Maybe Helena is his daughter instead of Bruce’s.

  5. ELIOT Says:

THIS COMES AS A BIG LET DOWN TO THOSE OF US WHO HAVE BEEN LONG TIME FANS OF EARTH 2 AND THE JSA. AS WELL SHAZAM. THEY COULD HAVE JUST AS WELL PLAYED UP ON THE IDEAL OF THE EARTH 2 IN THE JSA ANNUAL 1 AS GOOD AS THAT BOOK WAS IT WAS ONLY A TEASE . NOW DAYS IT SEEMS THERES NOTHING BUT DEATH AND DARKNESS IN COMICS. I THINK THE MAIN REASON WHY DC COMCIS WERE BEING SO TOP SECRET ABOUT THIS BOOK IS BECAUSE THEY KNOW ALL ALONG WHAT TYPE OF BOOK THERE WERE GOING TO BE PUTING OUT IN THE FIRST PLACE.
