AvX #1 Could Be Bigger Than You Thought

February 24th, 2012
Author Graeme McMillan

If this report is to be believed, Marvel’s big Avengers vs. X-Men push will pay off in a big way:

It looks like Justice League is about to lose its streak of number one sales. Not only is Jim Lee away from the book for a few issues, but Avengers Vs X-Men #1 is coming through, and I hear from reliable industry sources that its orders are expected to top 200,000 this weekend. I can’t see any way that it won’t be a number one best selling issue, can you?

That is a great, great number for the book, giving Marvel its biggest hit since… Civil War, I think? If this keeps up for all twelve issues – and the interest is spread across the tie-in books – then it’s definitely the boost Marvel fans have been hoping for for awhile, in terms of sales, and a sign that the horse race for market supremacy is fully back on after a couple of slow months – not to mention a strong start to something that the publisher is saying will lead to “the most seismic shift at Marvel in a decade”…

    That’s fantastic for Marvel then.

Just goes to show that the direct market is controlled by gimmicks more than quality these days.

  2. Duh! Says:

    This looks like steaming crap.

  3. Obhli Says:

Of course its going to be big. 2 big franchises with several movies in a few years plus more Marvel movies vs. 1 DC’s one and Dark Knight even as the number 1 movie of all time couldn’t even give DC the crown in 2008.

And it sucks all the same

  4. RF Says:

    You guys seem fun.

  5. davesnothereman Says:

the only thing that would really qualify as a “seismic shift” at marvel would be to take the creative reins out of the hands of bendis and stop the trend of event leads to event leads to event, ad nauseum.

personally i had enough after the end of secret invasion. and how many events ago was that?

  6. RF Says:

    That was two events ago.

  7. davesnothereman Says:

I guess it’s because they all feel endless.

  8. Daniel Worthington Says:

My guess is “seismic shift” indicates the reactivation of the x-gene (which, depending on how it plays out, could result in the death of millions, or the “salvation” of millions.)

As for Bendis, isn’t this his last hurrah with the Avengers? So he IS handing the creative reigns over to someone else. Personally, I’m curious to see what he plans to write in place of the Avengers books…

Oh, and as for event leads to event leads to event – all that’s required is for people to lose interest enough that the events don’t sell. That’s not happening, so as much as you may be sick of it, most people apparently are not. (I mean, that’s pretty much the crux of the article!)

  9. Simon's cat Says:

DC rebooted for nothing, they lost thousands of old fans and sales sink again, probably will be much less than pre-reboot soon. All they needed was good marketing to sell comics ala Marvel. DC does not have anything left in their arsenal anymore, who would buy a DCnU event now?

  10. Leandro Says:

Ok, this reads at a not so subtle Marvel ad…

  11. Jeff Says:

The Pheonix destroys and puts something new in it’s place
This is your sesmic shift, Marvels answer to DC’s reboot.
Personally I’m on event burnout and may wait for the collected TPB.
The relaunch, reboot for DC has been great for them and now Marvel neeeds to try and get the top 10 sales again.
    So welcome to Marvels Flashpoint

  12. Lemurion Says:

The seismic shift I want to see at Marvel is toward stories about heroes fighting villains in affordable comic books. Not thinking it’s likely to happen.

@Simon’s cat: Don’t hold your breath, when Aquaman outsells every Marvel book it’s a sign that DC is doing something right.

  13. xrayspecs21 Says:

    I couldn’t care less about this…I don’t give a rodent’s derriere if this book sells 10,000 or 1,000,000.

  14. shameonshamus Says:

Simon’s cat sales on certain Dc titles are climbing post reboot… over all the reboot has paid off in recognition press and sales….. you are deluluded if you are trying to convince anyone else other wise….. i suspect Marvel Zombie -ism and you will make out that Dc is doing bad no matter what they are doing

  15. Michael Says:

Marvel needs gimmicks and stunts because that’s all they’ve got. Their “brain trust” would starve anything but a Marvel zombie.

  16. wah Says:

they should do an event about prepubescent fanboys stuck in the close-minded Marvel vs. DC mindset who whine and whine and whine yet still come read up on every bit of news about the companies they claim to hate so much and in fact most likely still secretly read most of what that company puts out via shelf browsing or scans or whatever.

nah. it’d never work. way too unrealistic.

  17. Jared Says:

I was re-reading part of Civil War and realized how short it was. I didn’t like it then, but some of it looks a little better. It just needed to be longer and forget that Spider-man stuff. Something like should either not be done at all or done when Spider-man wasn’t so unrecognizable. Actually, he’s still pretty unreconizable now. He’s got no personality. I’m getting off course. They it was so big that it should of been longer and perhaps that would of helped it be better with 12 issues instead of 7 (constanlty delayed ones).

In fact I don’t want to read another Spider-man story ever. Who cares about a guy who only cares about himself and undying aunt?:)

  18. Jared Says:

What I was saying is, this looks better put together than Civil War.
