Back From The Dead – Again!

February 9th, 2012
Author Graeme McMillan

Considering the accusations that Avengers Vs. X-Men has been facing since its announcement that it’s little more than a second attempt to do Marvel’s 2006 mega-hit event series Civil War, you’d have thought that the publisher would do as much as possible to play up the differences between the two series – Make a bigger deal about the fact that this story is about the survival of the human and mutant races instead of a political argument, say, or the round-robin creative teaming of some of their most popular writers – instead of release a preview cover that makes it look as if AvX will bring Captain Marvel back from the dead… just like Civil War did.

On the plus side, it’s unlikely that plans will change again so that this return of Mar-Vell – if it actually happens – will be retconned into being part of a secret invasion by alien shapechangers, but still, it’s such a weird coincidence that I can’t help but suspect it’s some kind of fake-out. After all, it’s not even been a couple of years since Mar-Vell last came back from the dead. Give the guy a break already.

Oh. Dear. These guys really just have no creative juice left in them at all, do they? I’m not even sure that Captain Marvel’s titles sold all that well back in the ’60s and ’70s. That’s pretty much why the powers that be let Starlin kill him off in the first place. What on earth makes Marvel editorial think he’ll sell any better now?

Guys! Quit breaking the old toys in the toy box and come up with some new characters. Geez.

  2. Super Mutant Says:

I don’t think it will be really original captain marvel. It will be another clone or skrull or something. I wish bring back one of his kids who have been needless killed off in recent years. I mean I felt son was killed off just to piss on Peter David’s run and the fact won bet over marvelle. They can something else but storyline made no sense. If it is captain marvel, leave him dead already and gave the name back to real Captain Marvel (Billy Batson). What next Uncle Ben and Gwen Stacey really coming back?

  3. CT Says:

It is precisely because of DC’s plans to reintroduce Captain Marvel/Shazam that the Captain Marvel name ( and character) keeps being banded about as Marvel feels the need. Marvel owns the name now only because DC sued Fawcett in the first place to prevent Billy Batson and crew from continuing to sell more comics than Clark Kent and crew. I’m a big DC fan but I’m also a bigger comics reading/collecting fan!

  4. Ultra8 Says:

The guy had one of the better deaths in comic history, just let him rest in peace and resurect one of his kids that have been offed in the most recent years.

  5. GT Says:

I’d vote a no on Mar-Vell and hope its Genis-Vell. They’ve been trying to replace him since his needless death in Thunderbolts, first with his sister, then with Marvel Boy. If I recall his essence was disbursed in time and space, maybe the Phoenix Force will collect those facets and bring him back.

  6. Matt Says:

    Remender tweeted:

“No worries, folks. We have huge fun plans for Mar-Vell. Lots of surprises on the way. Not a Skrull! Not an imaginary story!”

  7. Kevin Says:

Secret Invasion brought Captain Marvel back (Skrull shape-shifter) Not Civil War. The also brought him back in a limit 3 issues run dead avengers.

  8. Roman Says:

Avtuakly kevin Captain Marvel returned in Civil War: the return a one shot that came out during civil war and he was scene in the final battle of civil war on the pro reg side

  9. Roman Says:

    Actually*

  10. Matt Says:

Alt U. Marv was also seen in The Thanos Imperative as Lord Mar-Vell!

  11. SageShini Says:

@ Sean R-B: This has really got to stop. They create new characters all the time. Then those fail, so then they revive old ones to see if there’s any interest in those.

  12. Teri Says:

@Super Mutant: Gwen Stacy almost DID come back. JMS was going to retcon the “Sins Past” story in OMD. I suspect some writer or editor with an agenda will someday do it, no kidding.

  13. Mar-Vell fan Forever Says:

First let’s clarify: Civil War: THE RETURN was Mar-Vell being time warped from the past to the present. Timewarps do not count as resurrections in my opinion. Then Marvel pulled a bait and switch as far as I’m concerned by turning him into Captain Skrull_Vell.

Chaos War: I knew Marv’s return in that was temporary and that he’d miss out on being restored like Alpha Flight was.

So now comes Avengers vs X-men. Now they also say that Carol Danvers will take the name Captain Marvel and star in the new series.

Sounds like Mar-Vell’s return is going to either be:

    1. A fake, which would not surprise me since sometimes I think Marvel is just too chicken to bring Mar-Vell back.
    2. Temporary, either Phoenix briefly restores him or he dies again
    3. They mention a Minister Marvel that will draw the Phoenix to the Kree Homeworld. Perhaps Mar-Vell decides to take the name Minister Marvel and asks Carol to be the new Captain Marvel.
