Don't think it will fail initially as in everyone that New 52 would fail and it took off and then slowed down considerably. Expect the same thing to happen to Before Watchmen since we're talking mini-series and not a group of monthlies that could carry greater weight.

Wow! The op/ed that just went up touches on everything I feel- bravo, Newsarama!

With respect, Molnek, your feelings about not being alright with the prequels, but pretty much still willing to give them a shot/read them just proves that it's not really a big deal. It's actually the prefect example of why DC is doing this: they know fans will check it out and very likely enjoy it. And that is OK.

Why does everyone focus on the characters? It's the story that matters. Watchmen is a complete story it shouldn't need anything added on to it. In fact because they're all based on charlston characters then just use those if you like. You don't see Alan Moore yelling about him owning Rorshach you see him yelling about them using his ideas and possibly rival magicians.

I'm not alright with these prequels I understand why they're being made and I will definately give them a shot. But I just hate the logic of "Well he's used other writer's characters so he can't say shit." Especially because he takes those characters out of their world and into a different one, he doesn't just start it off with 20 years earlier.

I think it's a good idea.

Many fans (witch ultimately, people need to focus on) WANT to read these stories. Serve the fans. No one wants to really admit that they'd like to read new stories with these characters. I think we should respect that many fans are connected to these characters and want to read new stories with them.

Hate the idea? Insults your feelings? That is totally fair. We're all entitled to our opinions.

And really, most of the characters were based on other characters, but in a "real world" look-how-dark-they-really-are kinda way. Alan Moore took what existed and made it cool. So now it's time for other creators to do the same.

Yes. It sucks that newer concepts aren't being published. But honestly, the current climate of fans doesn't seem to WANT anything incredibly new. And given the success of many of the new 52 (Wonder Woman, people) old concepts can still have fresh new stories.

And let's be fair, people. How many CREATORS in the industry are coming up with fresh new ideas that would compete with this? Not really many, or I suspect DC would have happily taken advantage of those ideas.

And I want the comic book industry to thrive and grow, not die based on some "principles" the common person can't really be bothered with.

You want new concepts? New ideas? It's not going to happen if DC doesn't make money for their parent company. So let this sacrifical cow burn in the fire and everyone will stay warm a bit longer.

"If you dont want a sequel or somebody else touching your stuff, keep your stuff as creator owned or keep to more indie venues." - I love and totally agree with this sentiment. I wonder what would've happened if Moore had decided to go the creator-owned route, only to have DC sue him for using derivatives of Charlton Comics characters? For that matter, the only reason they're derivative characters and not the Charlton heroes themselves is because DC was hesitant (to say the least) about Moore putting the characters to such dark (for lack of a better word) uses.

Moore wants to complain about DC following up on a work he created for DC that uses derivatives of Charlton Comics characters (to which DC had then recently acquired the rights)--a work that, had Moore gotten his wishes right off the bat, would have used the actual Charlton heroes themselves.

While I like Alan Moore's writing, he really needs to get over this idea he seems to have that his work is sacrosanct. I heard he had histrionics over the changes in V for Vendetta and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen as well. This is just more of the same--whining because his overinflated ego's been bruised. I put him in the same category as Harlan Ellison: writers whose work I like, but whose antics and personalities leave me absolutely cold.

“Leaving aside the fact that the Watchmen characters were variations on pre-existing characters created for the Charleton Comics universe, Straczynski continued, “it should be pointed out that Alan has spent most of the last decade writing very good stories about characters created by other writers, including Alice (from Alice in Wonderland), Dorothy (from Wizard of Oz), Wendy (from Peter Pan), as well as Captain Nemo, the Invisible Man, Jekyll and Hyde, and Professor Moriarty (used in the successful League of Extraordinary Gentlemen). I think one loses a little of the moral high ground to say, ‘I can write characters created by Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Conan Doyle and Frank Baum, but it’s wrong for anyone else to write my characters.’”

Say what you will , but the man got some logic there .

And i can only agree , it's mainstream serialized comics . If you dont want a sequel or somebody else touching your stuff , keep your stuff as creator owned or keep to more indie venues .

Not sure about this.

Yet, the line-up of creators is so good that I'd probably kick myself for not getting them, but I can't afford it what with my current pull list and a number of video games and Blu-rays I'll be wanting this year.

I have too many hobbies.

A money grab? Yeah. Cynical? Yeah. What else is new?

Better talent than DC has lined up for the New 52? Yup. Worth my attention? Yup. Worth my money? Yup.

And I am also just glad that Darwyn Cooke is on good terms with DC again. His departure from The Spirit left me thinking that he would never do anything high-profile for them again. Happily, I was wrong.
