VAMPIRE DIARIES Actor Cast in Lead GREEN ARROW Role

January 31st, 2012

The CW’s Green Arrow TV pilot now has an actor for the DC superhero title role, 30-year-old Canadian actor Stephen Amell, Deadline reports.

Amell’s credits include stints on fellow CW dramas The Vampire Diaries and 90210, with his, ahem, largest part of late on HBO’s Hung, where he played male prostitute Jason.

The pilot — which is currently just called Arrow — was officially ordered earlier this month. Justin Hartley played Green Arrow in Smallville, which ended last year — no word at this point if this new series will have any palpable connection to what’s come before. David Nutter, who directed the Smallville, Supernatural and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles pilots, is helming this one, written by Andrew Kreisberg, Greg Berlanti and comic book veteran Marc Guggenheim — the latter two worked on 2011′s Green Lantern feature, and created the ABC series Eli Stone.

Hoping this one does not turn out to be a fiasco like the DCnU Green Arrow and the rest of the reboot..

I liked this guy on Hung.

But you lost me with Andrew Kreisberg attached as a writer.

His Green Arrow/Black Canary story completely sunk that book. It was awful. Everyone knew it. Sales proved it.

So yeah, lets put this guy on the TV show.

    He must work cheap.

I liked Justin Hartley as Green Arrow in Smallville; Justin is not lucky, this leading role escape him after Aquaman was not picked up.

    David nutter is a pro.

  5. Jomma Says:

If this show happens I only wish ONE thing. HAWKMAN and Green Arrow confrontation….pure EPIC!

  6. Jorell Says:

Well, at least he’s pretty. Everything I’ve read about this pilot makes it sound like a typical CW young adult drama, but it’s too early to to say whether it’ll really be good or bad. I’ll just be glad to see another superhero on the screen.

  7. needcomicmoney Says:

They should have used Justin Hartley and made it a Smallville spin-off. Existing fan-base equals guaranteed audience.

  8. Michael Huff Says:

Good job. He can do it.

  9. ArcherCharactersSuck! Says:

So glad they’re going with a different actor. The one in Smallville looks like a clean-shaven lesbian!

I guess WB is trying to capitalize on the potential of Hawkeye’s popularity from this Summer’s Avengers movie.

I would love to give this series a try but two of the writers shown here do not really give me confidence in the series… :(

  11. TheSalvatoreBros Says:

    Dear Green Arrow Creators,

Please watch the Secret Circle and do the opposite!

  12. Jaymes Says:

I think the series has a better chance of getting picked up with Justin Hartley.

  13. Mike C Says:

Why do I have the feeling that other than having “Arrow” in the name this will have little resemblance to the Green Arrow as we know him. Will the character even be Oliver Queen? Maybe they should have just gone with the Golden Age Centaur Comics hero The Arrow…heck, he’s probably even in the public domain.

  14. Mavrik Says:

It won’t work. The creators of Smallville were trying to develop a show based on Superboy and it just evolved (in a good way) into Smallville. Now it just seems like studios are intentionally trying to develop these super hero shows/movies. They all seem to lack the “concept” and are just developing for the sake of developing.

A Bruce Wayne type Smallville would EASILY have been a hit (yes, I know this horse has been beaten enough) but it’s the truth. Why the rights were never given is beyond me. You can’t tell me they’re worried about it interfering with Nolan’s movies.

Smallville, with more freedom, could have spun off a Bruce Wayne series and maybe even a Diana/Wonder Woman. Heck, I’d even take a Tim Drake/Red Robin high school series over a Green Arrow. But you know what? Creatively their hands are going to be too tied with anything Batman / Bat-Family related so never mind. My prediction? This will fail.

  15. Kooster Says:

Let’s see…the following pilots were turned down or fans screamed not to go forward with the series:

    1) Aquaman, which I personally liked. I’m would guess that some exec crunched the numbers, and decided the numbers didn’t look good enough.

    2) Grayson. Dick Grayson at a circus? Yeah, right! Wait a minute…isn’t the comic book? (sarcasm)

    3) The recent Woman Woman pilot, which had more bad concepts than good going forward for it. And I’m not talking about the costume.

    4) Blue Beetle (Jamie) is going to be part of the DC Nation.

And so, it seems, WBE is digging into the B-list characters since Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, the Flash, and Shazam are untouchable for live action TV shows.

If WBE and the WB aren’t going to commit at least $1 million per Arrow episode, like how Paramount did for ST:TNG, then what’s the point? (Yes, I realize that $1 million back then is not the same amount as today.) In other words, have enough money to produce a good show and not use “cheaper” resources like the company that did all the SPX for Smallville. Bleech!

And also, make Arrow a more mature, less soap opera show then Smallville? If this Green Arrow is going to be restricted to a normal bow and arrow–possibly due to budgets–then allow this Green Arrow to actually use his arrows to shoot people…like hit them in the legs or see his arrows slice through people’s hands.

Considering what DC Comics did with The New 52, why isn’t there a Cyborg TV series in the works?!?

  16. Rams Says:

They should have gone with Justin Hartley or someone who looks a bit like him. Green Arrow is not supposed to be this thick, he is slim built but muscular, what are they smoking.
