Director Matthew Vaughn is returning for an X-Men: First Class sequel, Deadline reported Monday.

The news was tucked into a post on Fox production president Emma Watts sticking with the studio through 2015, along with word that Bryan Singer is returning as producer, and that Simon Kinberg — a First Class producer and co-writer of X-Men: The Last Stand — will write the screenplay. Though no other details are yet available — like possible storylines, actors returning or an estimated start time for production — in the same article Deadline speculates that Chronicle director Josh Trank might be tapped for a Fantastic Four reboot, also at Fox.

X-Men: First Class, released last June, grossed $146.4 million domestically, for a worldwide total of $353.6 million.

As long as they get a significant part of the cast back, I’ll be happy. Most of the X-Men used were eclectic and interesting. There could be more interesting Brotherhood members, though… and the Emma Frost actress should be replaced. Hers was the only performance I found lacking.

  2. PhoenixRules Says:

Please, please Fox, please return the film right back to Marvel and just settle for a cut of the profit because you’re killing the X-Men franchise!

  3. Nickel-Eye Says:

So I guess the big question is will Vaughn continue to tie the series into “historic” events as he jumps forward decade by decade and if so what will they be? What event in the 70′s could serve as both a challenge and a metaphor as perfectly as the Cuban Missile Crisis in his first film? Although it will be fun to see the X-Men in the decade of excess . . . Disco mutants here we come!

  4. CS Barnahrt Says:

PhoenixRules are you sereious? Fox has done an excellent job with the franchise and have made millions of millions of dollars. There was only one film in the five I didnt like and that is to be expected with Brett Ratner directing a film.

I prefer the cinema X-Men over anything currently being made about the X-Men.

  5. Levi Says:

Remember PhoenixRules, they don’t kill the franchise until the third installment. Then it’ll rise from the ashes again like your namesake to restart the cycle of good, great, crap.

  6. Hadoken_Master Says:

So, the screenwriter from X3 is writing this? …Fuck.

  7. Nathan Daniels Says:

Hadn’t thought about the ’70s, but that would be a great way to bring in Dazzler in her original costume! LOL!

  8. Coming Curse Says:

Regardless of how anyone personally feels about the movies it doesn’t make any sense to say Fox is killing the franchise. Fox has put out five X-Men films and each one has been a financial success.
