MorrisonCon Coming Fall 2012, Details Sketchy Beyond That

January 5th, 2012
Author Albert Ching

MorrisonCon is coming in fall 2012, apparently. What exactly that means, where it’s happening, and when, well, that remains to be revealed.

In a production from “the people behind Isotope Comics and iFanboy,” a new convention — clearly headlined by Grant Morrison — is scheduled for some point in fall 2012, billed as an “innovative new approach to comic conventions.” Confirmed guest so far? Well, Morrison, natch, along with “9 hand picked comic creator superstars.” As far as venue goes, San Francisco (or somewhere in the Bay Area) would be a reasonable guess, given the involvement of Isotope, but that would indeed just be a guess. There’s a Twitter account, too, but it has yet to tweet, in keeping with the somewhat mysterious vibe. Folks looking for more information can add themselves to the mailing list right here, and we’ll keep an eye on things and pass along more information as it comes.

another sign of why comics decline.. the egos and beliefs of comic “superstars” who think the medium is secondary to their pretentious, david bowie-wannabe personas. morrisoncon? its ridiculous. used to be about COMICS.

  2. kal el Says:

I agree with the above. This is another joke where the people in comics think they are above the people that buy their products.

What happened to comics for comics and not comics for egos?

  3. Simon DelMonte Says:

    It’s clearly time to:

    a) Shave our heads and prepare for the Grant Morrison Cosplay Parade. (No point in entering the contest, though. BKV wins.)

    b) Write Grant Morrison filk songs.

    c) Lay the groundwork for MillarCon and EllisCon.

  4. John Doe Says:

I’m looking forward to the Geoff Johnscon. Now there’s a real example of a superstar ego.

  5. Zeitgeist Says:

Huh. You know, I think I’d attend an EllisCon.

  6. Lierson Says:

There was a MillarCon already, it was called Kapow!

A Straczynskicon would not be finished, I believe.

  7. James Says:

Some might say fans that would take the time to post a purely negative comment on a thread describing what they believe is wrong with comics… is what’s wrong with comics. I’m just saying, some might say.

  8. Joe Kach Says:

I agree with James. Some people suck.

I was at Isotope’s Morrison event in August last year & it was awesome, shaved heads, ego, & all. Grant was a truly genuine & humble gentlemen & I feel fortunate to have spent the time I did speaking to him.

    So, screw you guys.

  9. ThatFartingLover Says:

No, don’t even split it down the middle gents. You can’t crap on someone just bc they have a different opinion. Those 2 top posts aren’t by trolls or peeps being automatically negative. A lot of ppl have spent years in this hobby and have years and time invested in the medium, surely if they disagree with something it don’t automatically make them a hater

  10. Joe Kach Says:

They weren’t exactly expressing a difference of opinion, dude.

  11. Jay Says:

It’s gonna be a weekend full of Peyote, Demonic Invocations and Tantric Sex. Oh…and comics.

  12. Dartfin Says:

Oh my! He has his name in the title, that means he’s PRETENTIOUS! I’m absolutely CERTAIN HE picked it, not iFanboy or any other sponsors, I know this because I was at every creative meeting! It’s all about ego, it has nothing to do with creators seeing the need for cons that put the focus squarely back on comics. I for one am fine going to the NY Comic Con and the SDCC and not making it into panels I want to see because people who have no interest in it are holding seats for a MOVIE or SHOW panel the comes next. It doesn’t matter that Millar SAYS he started Kapow! because the demand for a UK based comic con wasn’t being met, I say it’s all because of his ego. All of them, just ego maniacs thinking they’re better by putting on shows for people who love comics to attend, I can’t believe it. How arrogant! I hate everything they do, and I won’t buy their comics anymore, unless the art’s good, or the story’s awesome, or the reviews or cool, or I’m bored and have nothing to read, or…well, I just won’t.

  13. bob Says:

    Ah, irony. I recognise that.

  14. jsutsaying Says:

@bob. The real irony is hating on haters.

  15. bob Says:

    @jsutsaying: Touche!

  16. Dartfin Says:

I’m not hating on haters, it’s the internet, I’d tire myself out in 5 minutes. I’m pointing out the ridiculousness in what they themselves said based on the scant amount of information in the release.

  17. PinoyPower1986 Says:

you’re right Dartfin, because it’s just hatred, surely there wasn’t a foundation that was built, and this was just one more layer on it. it’s completely from this news release alone that i’d feel this way about Morrison. because surely nothing else he has done or said has ever made him seem pretentious and thinking hes above comics, right?

  18. JT Says:

    So you go to MorrisonCon:

    - The dialogue you have with people is awkward and unnatural.
    - You can’t find anything because the timeframe is screwed up.
    - New guests pop up out of nowhere with no explanation.

And when you leave? Everyone else that attended tells you it’s “genius”, a “really neat take on the concept” and “you just don’t get it”.

Sounds like this year’s Breakfast of Champions :)

And yes, it was both equal parts “genius” and “I didn’t get it”…. probably because I’m still picking out the shrapnel from my mind exploding ….

  20. Mr_K Says:

    I wonder if this’ll end a la Waco?…

  21. Isabel Gonzalez Says:

this is so sad…comic conventions celebrated comics in general. Now we’re celebrating EGOs? Dont take me wrong, Mr. Morrison has written some good stuff, but other writers have too. I think we are losing perspective here, Keep your superinflated egos at home and just celebrate comic art and writing at regular comic book conventions. They are much more fun. I will not support any type of convention like the proposed MORRISONCON. The concept is just…ludricuous.

  22. Mike Says:

Wow, definitely a lot of hatred and judgment for a convention that has almost nothing written about it, not even a press release or description of events. From the reactions you’d think it was called “Hitler Comes Back From The Dead, Runs Over My Dog, And Rapes My Mom Con.” Relax people. Take a deep breath, and just wait till there’s a real description or press release, then feel free to unload your hate. Really, it’s not like your mom has got zombie AIDS or anything. It’s not that bad.

  23. 香港漫畫 Says:

Terrific work! That is the kind of information that should be shared around the web. Shame on the seek engines for no longer positioning this put up higher! Come on over and consult with my web site . Thank you =)

  24. David A Says:

I hope that this thing might clarify what is going on for me, and it isn’t simply about comics. It is all very muddled and confusing.
