What Were Your Favorite Books of The Year?

December 30th, 2011
Author Graeme McMillan

2011 has, as I’ve said before, been a very odd year for comics – One that saw DC Comics change their game up with apparently successful results, the rise of digital comics (with all the nervousness and uncertainty that that entailed) and Marvel go through what feels more and more like a modern-day version of the DC Implosion of yore. But, most importantly, it’s been a year full of really, really good comics, no matter your tastes. I’ve written about some favorites elsewhere, but I’m curious: What comics have been your favorites of the year – and which ones do you think have been unfairly overlooked?

I’ll offer a suggestion for the latter: I’ve been loving IDW’s Dungeons and Dragons all year – I think it’s one of the most-well-written team books available, with John Rogers continually coming up with smart, funny dialogue and well-paced plots. I’m always kind of surprised that more people aren’t talking about it. But what do you think? What 2011 books should’ve been talked about more, and why?

The Green Lantern books were pretty darned good, but I always think that. I do miss Thor: The Mighty Avenger terribly, it was wonderful. And Journey into Mystery with little Loki has been uniformly excellent as well. Action Comics and Wonder Woman and the new Aquaman have also been fun.

    Daredevil
    Journey into mystery
    Uncanny X-force
    Scalped
    Punisher

  3. Cisco Kid Says:

Savage Dragon has been terrific this year. Atomic Robo: Ghost of Station X is my favorite book all year though.

  4. Simon DelMonte Says:

Xombi, with marvelous Frazier Irving art and a smart script by John Rozum, was a joy to read. And also doomed from the day it was launched, given how short a time it was till DC announced the reboot. It’s probably hoping for too much to ask that DC bring it back again, but if THUNDER Agents could return, why not Xombi?

And Batwing, with its focus on contemporary Africa, stands out as a very different sort of DC book, even if it’s got the Batman Seal of Approval. I don’t expect it to last more than a year, but I hope it does.

  5. Super Mutant Says:

    Power Girl
    Secret Six
    Both Batgirl series.
She-Hulks (even though only last two issues came out this year)
Green Lantern Corps (Before reboot and war of lanterns)
    Rachel Rising

  6. C. Christian Scott Says:

Batgirl (the Bryan Q. MIller one, although Gail’s is enjoyable so far)
    Atomic Robo
    Witch Doctor
    Chew
Dungeons and Dragons (totally with you on John Rogers)
    Skull-Kickers
    Secret Six
    X-Factor
And, I almost hate myself for saying this, but Wolverine and the X-Men. I mean, wow!

  7. Smax Says:

I agree that Dungeons and Dragons doesn’t get enough attention. I’d also mention Witch Doctor (Image), ’68 (Image), Screamland (Image), and The Cape (IDW) as great series that don’t get nearly enough buzz.

  8. Ultra8 Says:

    Skull-Kickers
    Mega-man
    Secret Six
The Black Terror(When new issues came out)
    Godzilla
    Tiny Titans
    Kirby: Genesis
    JLA(Post Reboot)
Batman the Brave & the Bold
    Sonic Universe
    Atomic Robo
    Red Hood and the Outlaws
    JLI
