Jim Lee’s FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2012 T-Shirt Design

December 13th, 2011
Author Albert Ching

Jim Lee has designed a t-shirt for Free Comic Book Day 2012 — and, well here’s what it’ll look like (except picture it with sleeves and stuff):

The image comes courtesy of The Source, and as you can see, it’s the main seven members of The New 52′s Justice League, in all of their revamped splendor. The shirt will be solicited in January 2012′s Previews catalog, with proceeds supporting the Free Comic Book Day effort. This time around, Free Comic Book Day hits on May 5, 2012 — the day after Avengers debuts in theaters.

As noted by DC, the piece is an homage to José Luis García-López — check the original work after the jump.

Neat. But I would prefer the Garcia-Lopez pic. Maybe I am just old…

  2. benwahbob Says:

It’s better drawn than the Jim Lee one.

  3. Jadeb Says:

The comparison does Lee’s costume redesigns no favors. Thought the revised Supersuit might grow on me, that maybe I was stuck in the past, but no, the new one’s just bad.

  4. Acro Says:

Lump me in with the rest of the old folks, I too prefer the José Luis García-López version of the JLA. There is a warmth to it that is lacking in the Jim Lee version.

  5. The Zug Says:

I’m with the rest of you. Garcia-Lopez all the way.

  6. Clover904 Says:

    I love Lee’s redesigns!

  7. mk Says:

Old timers go take a nap.Love the new design!

  8. Emiliano Alvarez Says:

I like the redesings but Lee should redraw this

  9. smooth_operator Says:

    Awake from my nap!
I must add…I do like how Jim Lee turned the whole group shot into a logo, though. It’s pretty cool for a FCBD promo shirt.

  10. Dave Says:

I think I’ll just wear my Sergio Aragones again this year…

  11. Dave Says:

    Er, NEXT year!

  12. Mike Gilbert Says:

personally find most of the re-designs “okay” but not really improvements. The only one I actually dislike is Cyborg – he’s too bulky and tank-ish. But that trend started a long time ago – he’s lost too much of his human appearance in the time sense his debut.
Yeah, I’m old too – but after sticking with these characters for over 30 years I think my opinion should count for something.

  13. ben Says:

I have that older shirt (drunken ebay purchase!)

The Lee shirt’s ok, but I don’t like Wonder Woman’s face and it looks to me like they took GL’s upper torso (head, shoulders, folded arms0 and shrunk them just a bit – maybe to not have him overlap Aquaman, but Hal’s pose looks unnatural as a result.

  14. comic_dude Says:

Can’t stand Wonder Woman’s new outfit but the rest of the picture looks okay, I suppose.

  15. Fremgen Says:

Well not Garcia’s best work, but his stuff always looks great. Jim’s update is nice too, but what happened to wonder Woman’s hair!? And yeah they should call him Chunk instead of Cyborg.

  16. Paul Says:

    Stinks

  17. NakedOni Says:

Superman and Batman’s new redesign had to happen, and it’s overdue. The underwear on the outside look is dated and looks goofy. It looks like they are wearing diapers. Also, WW’s outfit is essentially the same, so I don’t see what’s to complain about. And the armor segmenting on the outfit makes sense too. Superman flys through outerspace and smashes comets and stuff …do you think a dinky little spandex outfit would hold up during all of that? I know fanboys miss their super-diapers, but quit knocking Lee’s redesigns because he introduced a slight bit of practicality to the outfits.

  18. Louis Says:

Maybe the redesigns had to happen, but do we really need collars on Batman & Superman ?

  19. comic_dude Says:

Also Cyborg looks over the top (like something out of an X-Men comic from the nineties) and Aquaman doesn’t need a collar either…

  20. Deep+shock Says:

Does Jim Lee actually think there will still be people interested in the New 52 by May 2012? JL has lost 100K(!!!) since September, SUERMAN and ACTION 60k, THE FLASH 58K, WW#3 did last year’s #600 numbers, GREEN ARROW#3 and BOP#3 did less than 2010′s GA&BOP#3, MR.TERRRIFIC, DEATHSTROKE, FIRESTORM plummeting below 30k already and so on! This reboot does not have any legs and is proving out to be a terrible idea since old fans are abandoning DC and new ones do not stick!

Well not Garcia’s best work, but his stuff always looks great. Jim’s update is nice too, but what happened to wonder Woman’s hair!? And yeah they should call him Chunk instead of Cyborg.

  22. Little My Says:

Love the older version as some people mentioned it looks warmer and more genuinely heroic. Moreover it has Black Canary!

  23. sam Says:

ha! it seems as if Batman pushed the Flash aside so he could pose

  24. benwahbob Says:

Deep+Shock: Didn’t you just get booted from the CBR Forums for Trolling. This isn’t the DCMB’s Ignatios/JLeague/Owlwoman whatever the hell your calling yourself today. Keep the trolling there.

  25. Matt Halteman Says:

I’m sorry to add my voice to the chorus of naysayers, but it was indeed a really bad idea for Lee to try to homage Garcia-Lopez. JLGL is, quite simply, a master of comics art. While I like Jim Lee’s artwork alright on its own, it definitely suffers by comparison.

Simply put: I want to read a comic about the characters in the JLGL illustration, while I have already lost most of my interest in the people in Lee’s version. Of course, Geoff Johns is partly to blame for that, as well.

And, yes, the new designs are terrible, but they’ll go away soon. I have no doubt about that.

  26. Michael Huff Says:

I really dig the new costumes. But do they have any idea how hard they’re making it on the cosplayers?

  27. MrVinegar Says:

I applaud and understand the need for diversity in the DCU but Cyborg always has and always will be lame.

  28. kentonindy Says:

I hate that the Garcia Lopez team has all the original members except Hawkwoman. It’s one thing to have a pic with 10 or so members and to not include everyone, but if Zatanna and Firestorm are there, then Hawkwoman better be included as well.

The most glaring thing to me is that Wonder Woman’s outfit doesn’t look as nearly out of place back then as it does now. With Hawkman and J’Onn included in the past, her showing of skin doesn’t seem quite so out of place. Also, Jim Lee draws her upper body as if a boob is going to pop out at any moment, which just makes her look silly. Add to that the fact that all of the men in the new group are uniformly covered from collar to toe, and it truly becomes insulting how she is presented.

  29. Rick Says:

I like the DCnu thing, but the Garcia pic has more heart. It’s a drawing, as opposed to calculated art that doesn’t really work, like a lot of Jim Lee (copycat John Byrne) art and a lot of the new stuff. Superman is really bad design, all blue is bland. They need to do something about that. It’s more modern with all the fancy effects, but it’s pretty boring.

  30. shell Says:

prefers the old designs … jim lee’s characters look like plastic toys … and to my opinion, george pérez is the definitive jla artist !!!
