Astonishing Musical Chairs

December 12th, 2011

The news that Marjorie Liu and Mike Perkins are taking over Astonishing X-Men with #48 raises the obvious question: What happened to Greg Pak and Mike McKone? The Liu/Perkins run is being described as “open-ended,” so this isn’t some kind of revolving creative team situation. It continues a bad run of luck for Pak fans, what with his Alpha Flight and Herc titles with Fred Van Lente being canceled, and his Incredible Hulk run having just ended.

There are two more Marvel Next Big Thing calls set for tomorrow and Wednesday, so there’s every possibility that we’ll find out what Pak is doing next sooner rather than later, but nonetheless: I thought it was DC who was supposed to be having making all the changes to writers on series with little notice these days?

Interesting that the angle here is NOT that a woman writer is given a fairly high profile gig at Marvel (criticized often here for their lack of woman creators), but that another (non-woman) writer isn’t.

I’m not suggesting that blog@ doesn’t like women (or Ms Liu), but that blog@ doesn’t know how to report any news but BAD NEWS.

It’s kind of his style. If there is a way to write about something that Marvel does that make them look bad, he will find it.

  3. Hutchimus Says:

Exactly. I’m curious about Pak’s run too but the negativity and snarkiness has been running rampant lately.

  4. Kyle Says:

Yes, the negativity and snarkiness, much like is found in the comments of this blog.

The news is that Pak is gone because he was supposed to be on the book longer than this. If Liu was taking over the title after Pak finished a previously announced number of issues, then, yes, that would be the focus of the story.

But she isn’t, he didn’t, and it isn’t.
