In the latest DC New 52 creative shakeup, Paul Jenkins, currently the writer of Batman: The Dark Knight and DCU Presents‘ first six issues, will be taking over Stormwatch in March 2012 – but only for two issues.
Writing issues 7 and 8, as announced on DC’s The Source blog, Jenkins will be telling the story of inter-dimensional raiders coming to steal Earth’s gravity. Sounds like a “heavy” tale (I’m so sorry). On the blog, editor Pat McCallum said of the story:
“The Stormwatch crew can’t ever catch a break — no simple threats like bloodthirsty monsters or world-dominating supervillains to stop, it’s always some mind-cracking knot that Apollo, Midnighter and the rest of the crew have to untie,” says editor Pat McCallum. “This time out, Stormwatch have to solve the puzzle of dimension-stepping gravity miners, creatures so alien they’re not even technically alive. The last stand of humanity or, as Stormwatch calls it, ‘Monday.’”
No word on who will be writing the series with issue #9. Current series writer Paul Cornell announced he is off the book after issue #6 and won’t be returning on his Twitter account. He is staying on his other DC New 52 title, Demon Knights, however.

Disappointing news. I wasn’t blown away by Cornell’s first issue of Stormwatch but the series got better with each issue and I’m really enjoying it now. And I’m not enjoying the two books Jenkins is currently writing at DC at all. Unless DC announces a truly impressive new writer soon, issue 6 will probably be my final issue of Stormwatch.
The amount of creative changes on the New 52 books gets really worrying.

Noooooooo!

This is why I was skeptical of the “new 52″ from its inception. DC doesn’t know what it wants judging from the writing changes it is already making considering the “new 52″ is only months old! Cornell should be allowed to have stayed but apparently no one at DC believes in the concept of “patience”.

Here’s an idea for DC,Give Cornell a whole year. As for Jenkins story of interdimensional raiders stealing gravity? How about something more interesting. Also, why doesn’t DC give Mr. Terrific the axe and start a new Power Girl series instead of making her a SUPER HERO BOOTIE CALL!!!!!!!!!!!

The book is hideous, that’s the real problem.

Cornell’s run so far looks very promising, it’s a Men In Tights book with a difference.. There’s enough of the spirit from the Ellis to Millar era around: the threats are mind bending, the concepts other dimensional.. Sad to see this book isn’t even getting a year to prove itself.. Now we’re starting to see the bean-counting-execs cry for a New 52 Reboot..

Demon Knights is the only new 52 book that I am reading at the moment. Cornell is doing some good here. Fingers crossed sales stay up for at least 12 issues in the short term. Who knows how long DC will truly support this initiative before resetting the reset?

Power Girl is now a booty call? Really?

Sadly Chris, yes. Really. At least as of issue #1. I couldn’t continue after that.

I’m sorry, I just can’t get into a book where the two most popular characters are two guys all kissy-kissy and a guy wearing a suit doesn’t wear shoes. It’s just too weird.

@Michael Huff- really? In a world of radioactive spiders & space cops with thought powered rings, its two men being ‘kissy kissy’ and a bloke with no shoes that you find too weird? Interesting.

As for Cornell leaving the book, he won’t be the only one. I’ll be stopping reading it after #6 then. Based on one utterly terrible issue of Batman: The Dark Knight. Christ DC, have some patience.
