Whoop! Best news ever. Bendis' run has been the worst I've ever read on Avengers. Just the other day I was thinking about dropping all the Avengers titles after 25 years of collecting.

His dialogue is terrible, he doesn't have a fresh idea in his head. he keeps using the same villain and don't get me started on the "too many crossovers"

So long Bendis

Best news from Marvel in years. Bendis doesn't know how to write a comic even if a good story bit him. Let's hope he moves to DC or some other publisher. The first few new Avengers weren't bad but with the introduction of the Sentry it went downhill real fast. Boring stories, Endless babble (lets give them the same speach patern the easist way) The most disappointing X-overs like Civil War, Secret Invasion were the Avengers did literaly did notihing than talk etc etc. The Limited series that flowed out of the main events were all better. Sorry to say but it was 8 years of cheap crap and all the crtics that hailed Bendis into heaven and people that gave him prices must have been blind or bought by Marvel there is no other explanation here.

Maybe the sales were great but that is all there is. Probably longstanding fans who wanted a complete collection who still bought the series, Spider-man and Wolverine fans obviously joined the club. Some new readers who didn't care at all for the rich history of the Avengers and some Bendis fans who knew him from Daredevil and Spider-Man ultimate. Can't imagine that, with the exception of Bendis fans, there were people actualy enjoying these books for the last 8 years.

Writer who is a year older. The hint can't be taken literally. But if so, guessing they probably release the news at San Diego Comic On in July, Rick Remender or Dan Slott.

I love how, if you read these posts, it seems like the whole world has been not reading Avengers since he took over. The sales over the past 7 years paint a very different picture. More proof that the loudest people on these boards are the ones that fall into the minority.

That said, Fraction would kill (and anyone still hating on Fear Itself should read his wrap-up interview here on newsarama, puts the whole thing in a new perspective), Hickman would elevate the whole thing, but I have to say that I would love to see it fall into Remender's hands. Uncanny X-Force is the best superhero team book published by the big two, and he could bring magic to the Avengers.

All the above comments may or may not have relevance to this announcement, and for the vocal public, good on you. Speaking as a Bendis fan until of late, I'm not sure I even care about his "status update", except for one area, and one only(excluding the positive elements that have been inserted into the storyline). I sure would like to read an Avengers storyline I CARED about and wasn't guilty about owning for years after. For example, I'm not comfortable with explaining to my future generations how Norman Osborn became more than "the nutball, lawnmowed-head dad of Peter Parker's buddy who did stuff and helped kill Gwen Stacy, whatever, et cetera-boorring" villian. *cough, 66.6% of Spider-Man's villians, not including Kingpin would've been a better adversary; *2nd cough, Chameleon*
For example. (And no, its a point I have no interest in vesting towards any major shift in cultural opinion. Its a point, plain and simple.)

No Fraction, please! If "Fear Itself" was a trial run for Avengers, we'd all be better off if it was cancelled.

My real problem with BMB's run on Avengers is that -- looking back at it from memory -- it seems like the books just existed to fill the backstory for the "event" books. And that's not a good memory. His Ultron story in Mighty Avengers is the only thing (off the top of my head) that didn't seem to be tied to an event that was actually memorable.

BMB -- please return to Powers. We miss that!

I would like to thank BMB for his years of entertaining stories. They may not be everyone's favorite, but I have enjoyed them and he brought consistency to one of my favorite franchises. Look at DC-nu... how many titles have new writers within the first 7 issues... 7 YEARS of multiple titles and events... INCREDIBLE ACCOMPLISHMENT.

i have to wonder if this just isnt another stunt. instead of faking character deaths its announce a writer is leaving and then lets magically bring him back 11 months later. see he was gone for a long time! in "comic time".

I may be in the minority but I'm not ecstatic that Bendis is leaving the Avengers.

Sure, his Avengers run was underwhelming but New Avengers was generally a good read.

Also, more than anything, I'm worried that Marvel will give this title over to Fraction. I hope not; most Thor readers will tell you to avoid the guy like the plague and his X-Men run didn't win him many X-Men fans either.

If it were up to me, I'd love for Hickman to take over but maybe Marvel will get someone from outside their current crop to do Avengers, since it's guaranteed to draw a lot of interest post-movie. I'm secretly hoping Marvel has some deal with Grant Morrison in the works but Waid works too; I've been very impressed with his Daredevil.

Meanwhile, Brubaker might be good on New Avengers.

Thank the gods. I may actually be able to read the Avengers again. Honestly, I would rather have one of the actual storytellers at Marvel write the book instead of one of the rock stars. Give me Jeff Parker, Christos Gage, the Pak and Van Lente team, or hey, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning would also be great on Avengers. Those guys would actually focus on telling stories where the Avengers were heroic, in character, and fought serious threats instead of being vehicles for their favorite characters or some attempt at leaving an Alan Moore-esque "mark" on the book.

I gave him a fair shot for a few years. The fact that the Avengers became Any Character Bendis Thinks Is Cool is what turned me off to the title. They tended to be written in the same voice. When a major plot point of an issue was who would babysit Luke Cage's child, I knew I made the right decision to drop it.

I'm not necessarily bashing Bendis, the profile of the title was definitely raised during his tenure but to me it wasn't an Avengers title once Civil War started. It was an exercise to tell a line wide story for a few years using whatever characters Bendis wanted. It worked for Marvel, just not for me.

Sad news unless it's followed by a big announcement of someone else of equal talent. For me, I would drop the book if they gave it to Fraction. The last thing he wrote that I really enjoyed was The Order, and that's been a while. Brubaker might be interesting, I'd give it a look. Same goes for Slott, Hickman, and Spencer. Remender's been killing it on X-Force, really making every arc tense and making me want to come back every issue. If he could do that with the Avengers, I'd probably keep the book on my list.

But honestly I'd like to see someone from outside the current inner circle take a shot at it. Maybe someone like....Mike Carey? He's been doing great work on X-Men and The Unwritten. He can do character based stories like Bendis, but he's also got the chops to do "big screen" events as well. I'd like to see his take on The Avengers.

Pretty much the only thing that would get me to buy Avengers is if Ed Brubaker gets the book. Well Hickman or Remender I would buy, but neither of those seem terribly likely with their current workloads.

The best news the title has had for many years (come to think of it, since about 2004). You never know, the Avengers may become readable again.

After buying the Avengers without a break (okay, a little one during Liefeld's run) since the late 60's I ceased buying about 6 issues into Bendis' run. I wonder if it's too late to go back? Will I even be interested anymore? It used to be my favorite title too. Guess it depends on who picks up the writing reigns.

"He’s one of the reasons I don’t pick up Marvel nearly at all anymore. See ya pal."

I'll second that. When Bendis first started making it big I liked his style. But after about 2 years of Daredevil that same style turned into a repeating one note. I can't even read a whole issue of anything he writes now. Just won't hold my attention. I guess most Marvel fans enjoy him enough for the higher ups to put him in charge of everything.

And yes he did take Avengers to the top of the sales charts for Marvel. It helped he had 100% promotional backing from Marvel along with every event over the past decade tied into it. Meanwhile the former king franchise X-Men went into a steep decline which opened the door for Avengers. Something tells me his predecessor on the title, Geoff Johns, would have been able to do the same thing under those same circumstances.

Im sad to see him go. I enjoyed his writing and stories... Everyone seems to not enjoy it as much as I did and thats ok. But I find it funny how ppl can say it was horrible, terrible and the worse thing they read. Yet get the books every month, and you been getting them or it wouldnt have been ontop for so long..
Haters will hate I guess...
