Bendis Says He’s Leaving the AVENGERS in 2012

December 6th, 2011
Author Albert Ching

Whoa.

Tucked at the end of an interview on CBR with Brian Michael Bendis about the near future of the Avengers titles is the relatively stunning revelation that he’s leaving the franchise at some point in 2012. The news comes the same day as the announcement of Avengers vs. X-Men, a 12-part 2012 Marvel event co-written by Bendis. Here are words from the man himself:

“I’m going to wrap up ‘Avengers’ and ‘New Avengers.’ At the same time the first storyline of ‘Avengers Assemble’ will be done. It’s a good time to move on to other things. Before I go, though, I’m ending things big. I’m in countdown mode. You know when you’re watching a show like ‘Breaking Bad,’ and every episode feels like the second to last episode? That’s where I’m at. I’ve been on the Avengers longer than anybody in the history of the book. When you take everything into account, I’ve written over 200 issues. I’m very, very proud of that, and what we have coming up this summer gives me the opportunity to go out on a high note. I know enough about showbiz to know that’s a great time to go.”

Bendis first took over the book in 2004 with Avengers #500, the first part of “Avengers: Disassembled,” a status quo-shaking storyline that led to the demise of the original Avengers volume and the beginning of the New Avengers era. Since then, Bendis has also written Mighty Avengers, the 2010 relaunch of Avengers, plus the new title Avengers Assemble, set to launch in spring 2012 to coincide with the release of the Joss Whedon-directed film.

Of course, this brings up a ton of questions, none of which have readily available answers at this point — who’s taking over Avengers? What becomes of Avengers Assemble? Will New Avengers, clearly a book defined up to this point by Bendis’ signature writing style, continue? And does this mean Bendis will be taking on something new in the Marvel Universe (not that he doesn’t still have a ton of projects in a variety of media that he’s working on)?

Either way, there’s no doubt the impact that Bendis’ historic run on Avengers has had. Polarizing at times, he’s taken book to new heights and helped make it into one of Marvel’s most bustling franchises, one that’s depicted in a hit Disney XD cartoon and the focus of a hugely anticipated live-action feature film this coming May.

The full interview, in which Bendis also discusses matters including Norman Osborn “wielding a power that you’ve never seen him wield before,” is here.

Meh. BMB has had a pretty lackluster tenure on the books, so I personally won’t miss him. The dialogue gets old, the decompressed arcs are tiresome and the anticlimactic climaxes are…well…anticlimactic!

    >> Either way, there’s no doubt the impact that Bendis’ historic run on Avengers has had. Controversial and polarizing at times, he’s taken the once-struggling book and made it into one of Marvel’s most bustling franchises, one that’s depicted in a hit Disney XD cartoon and the focus of a hugely anticipated live-action feature film this coming May.>>

Busiek and Liefeld did the same thing.

  3. Mike Buzzelli Says:

I want to start a petition to get Kurt Busiek back to the title. Anyone have any ideas for who they would want on the book.

P.S. I hope he brings back the Wasp and the Scarlet Witch before he goes.

  4. brendan Says:

i loved Bendis’ run, but i understand the screaming it induced. regardless, the Avengers should always, always be the top Marvel book. and it wasn’t that way for a long time before Bendis came and took it there. and he held it there for a very long time. say what you want, but the best selling comic in the industry for it’s entire run starred Norman Osborn, Bullseye, and Victoria Hand. who else could have done that (all props to Deodato also)?

my one major complaint about his run was that his opening salvo tore the Vision in half, and for 8 years i’ve been thinking how great Vision would fit into his lineups. then he brings him back as a sidenote mid-comic, right as he’s leaving.

with the above character in mind, i would love to see either Jonathan Hickman, Mark Waid, or Zeb Wells take over avengers duties. just not Slott, Loeb, or Fraction.

  5. Jaymes Says:

Sorry to see him go, Bendis made the Avengers franchise great again I just hope that whoever takes over keeps the Avengers as interesting and entertaining as Brian Bendis did.

  6. Rod Lee Says:

Too many Avengers titles now. It is so watered down. Avengers Academy seems at times that it takes place in another universe. Too many titles going in too many directions. I mean really another new Avengers comic that features the characters that are going to be in the movie? Did comic fans really demand that?

  7. Darin Says:

I haven’t enjoyed anything he’s touched at Marvel, so for me he can’t leave quickly enough.

  8. Mike Says:

Even though Fear Itself was not the best, I’d be interested to see Matt Fraction take a crack at Avengers. Considering how good his run on Iron Man has been, and the short-lived greatness of the Order, I think he has a chance of doing pretty well.

Other than Fraction, I’d like to see maybe Van Lente, Dan Slott, or Nick Spencer give it a shot. I would say Mark Millar, but I’m betting he’s still going to be busy with his creator owned stuff at that time.

  9. Tory Says:

Hopefully this means I won’t have to endure anymore of Luke Cage and Jessica Jones’ relationship quarrels. It was painful to read a times.

  10. PhoenixRules Says:

Yeah, Bendis did help make the Avengers, Marvel’s #1 franchise, but at what cost? Most other franchises suffered, esp., the X-Men.

I hope to God, that his next project won’t be the X-Men, whom he raped and pillared for the sake of the Avengers!

  11. Aaron Poehler Says:

Too bad he didn’t leave when he ran out of ideas two years ago.

  12. Josh Says:

I never read Avengers until Bendis took over. I am sad he is leaving but excited for someone else to take the wheel.

  13. Spade Says:

At last. I might return to collecting the Avengers again and comic books.

  14. Bruce Wayne Says:

Obviously he’ll be following Grant Morrison on Batman (probably writing all Batman titles!) and i for one welcome our new overlord!

  15. AJ Says:

I don’t begrudge people long runs, but his was such a monopoly that it was stifling. I couldn’t believe when they launched alternate Avengers titles… and then had him write them as well. I love the Avengers characters, but never enjoyed his work. I’m thrilled at the prospect of a new perspective coming with a new writer.

  16. Meh Says:

Even those that still dislike him , can’t argue against the fact that he put them on the higher pedestal they deserved and were sorely missing for eons .

Bare some obvious golden eras and legendary runs , the Avengers were mostly that “extra thing taking half the pages of our fantastic four , spider-man and xmen books ” (before the 00s marvel books were collected in monthly and bimonthly big magazines such as “strange” and “Nova” in my country) sometimes cool , but mostly meh (remember uber lame arcs such as Tetrarchs of Entropy , Proctor and his Cersi obession or the Crossing ?) .

Bendis arrived and put it on top again , and by the time he will be done , he’d have fixed most (i dare not say all) characters he might have wronged in the Process .

Heck i feel that Hawkeye (movie based fame boost aside) came back stronger than ever .

His run will be remembered , and could easily serve as a strong fundation for even better , maybe by someone not antagonizing some of the older fans

  17. JW Says:

Just like the nightmare that he made out of Daredevil, resulting in Daredevil’s best era in ages under Mark Waid, we can only hope that the end of the horrible Bendis Avengers era will single the same return to greatness. These current Avengers books are about as bad as the book could have possibly ever gotten; characters that back stab each other and function as idiots. I’m looking for a heroic team, not the JERSEY SHORE of comics. Good riddance.

  18. ihaveyourshit Says:

cant believe were 17comments in and yet no ones bashing Bendis yet. Dear Bendis, thank you for saving the Avengers franchise and making it a top of the stack read. thanks for all those wonderful moments and many laughs. you made these titles the comics that gave back. Thank you sir. now onto the next big RUMOR…Hickman would rock the hell outve Avengers, he’s damn good with legacy (see FF and Shield). and id so love to spend money on some Jeff Parker NEW AVENGERS.

  19. Shadowpdf Says:

    Best news EVER!

  20. Cable Says:

I was never interested in the Avengers until he started on the book. He mixes things up and actually makes the stories interesting. Can’t wait to see what he has in store for his end.

  21. HannibalKing Says:

Now Marvel need to drop the price to $2.99 an issue and I will read the book for sure!

  22. Tim Says:

He’s one of the reasons I don’t pick up Marvel nearly at all anymore. See ya pal.

  23. Azel Says:

Im sad to see him go. I enjoyed his writing and stories… Everyone seems to not enjoy it as much as I did and thats ok. But I find it funny how ppl can say it was horrible, terrible and the worse thing they read. Yet get the books every month, and you been getting them or it wouldnt have been ontop for so long..
    Haters will hate I guess…

  24. burntredwaffle Says:

“He’s one of the reasons I don’t pick up Marvel nearly at all anymore. See ya pal.”

I’ll second that. When Bendis first started making it big I liked his style. But after about 2 years of Daredevil that same style turned into a repeating one note. I can’t even read a whole issue of anything he writes now. Just won’t hold my attention. I guess most Marvel fans enjoy him enough for the higher ups to put him in charge of everything.

And yes he did take Avengers to the top of the sales charts for Marvel. It helped he had 100% promotional backing from Marvel along with every event over the past decade tied into it. Meanwhile the former king franchise X-Men went into a steep decline which opened the door for Avengers. Something tells me his predecessor on the title, Geoff Johns, would have been able to do the same thing under those same circumstances.

  25. Jim Says:

hmm Hickman is doing a great job on FF I would love his Avengers I bet

    Mark Waid

Loved his Capt America and a lot of those had a nice Avengers tone!

    Alan Davis writer and artist!!

  26. The Chud Says:

Don’t let the door hit you on the way out, you freaking hack! Best news I’ve heard all day!

  27. Michael C. Says:

After buying the Avengers without a break (okay, a little one during Liefeld’s run) since the late 60′s I ceased buying about 6 issues into Bendis’ run. I wonder if it’s too late to go back? Will I even be interested anymore? It used to be my favorite title too. Guess it depends on who picks up the writing reigns.

  28. Mark D Says:

Bring Back Busiek and Perez! Bye Bye Bendis you really ruined alot of the good that was the Avengers. I may start to read it again!

  29. Neil64 Says:

The best news the title has had for many years (come to think of it, since about 2004). You never know, the Avengers may become readable again.

  30. Muttonman Says:

Pretty much the only thing that would get me to buy Avengers is if Ed Brubaker gets the book. Well Hickman or Remender I would buy, but neither of those seem terribly likely with their current workloads.

  31. Bloodmage Says:

Sad news unless it’s followed by a big announcement of someone else of equal talent. For me, I would drop the book if they gave it to Fraction. The last thing he wrote that I really enjoyed was The Order, and that’s been a while. Brubaker might be interesting, I’d give it a look. Same goes for Slott, Hickman, and Spencer. Remender’s been killing it on X-Force, really making every arc tense and making me want to come back every issue. If he could do that with the Avengers, I’d probably keep the book on my list.

But honestly I’d like to see someone from outside the current inner circle take a shot at it. Maybe someone like….Mike Carey? He’s been doing great work on X-Men and The Unwritten. He can do character based stories like Bendis, but he’s also got the chops to do “big screen” events as well. I’d like to see his take on The Avengers.

  32. Shawn Kane Says:

I gave him a fair shot for a few years. The fact that the Avengers became Any Character Bendis Thinks Is Cool is what turned me off to the title. They tended to be written in the same voice. When a major plot point of an issue was who would babysit Luke Cage’s child, I knew I made the right decision to drop it.

I’m not necessarily bashing Bendis, the profile of the title was definitely raised during his tenure but to me it wasn’t an Avengers title once Civil War started. It was an exercise to tell a line wide story for a few years using whatever characters Bendis wanted. It worked for Marvel, just not for me.

  33. jidasfire Says:

Thank the gods. I may actually be able to read the Avengers again. Honestly, I would rather have one of the actual storytellers at Marvel write the book instead of one of the rock stars. Give me Jeff Parker, Christos Gage, the Pak and Van Lente team, or hey, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning would also be great on Avengers. Those guys would actually focus on telling stories where the Avengers were heroic, in character, and fought serious threats instead of being vehicles for their favorite characters or some attempt at leaving an Alan Moore-esque “mark” on the book.

  34. jpbl1976 Says:

I may be in the minority but I’m not ecstatic that Bendis is leaving the Avengers.

Sure, his Avengers run was underwhelming but New Avengers was generally a good read.

Also, more than anything, I’m worried that Marvel will give this title over to Fraction. I hope not; most Thor readers will tell you to avoid the guy like the plague and his X-Men run didn’t win him many X-Men fans either.

If it were up to me, I’d love for Hickman to take over but maybe Marvel will get someone from outside their current crop to do Avengers, since it’s guaranteed to draw a lot of interest post-movie. I’m secretly hoping Marvel has some deal with Grant Morrison in the works but Waid works too; I’ve been very impressed with his Daredevil.

Meanwhile, Brubaker might be good on New Avengers.

  35. BibbinsMcgrgor Says:

    Holy SHIT….
    Is this April 1st????
    Or has Christmas come early???????
I CAN FINALLY START READING AVENGERS AGAIN? YESSSSSSSSSS.

  36. sniperboy4 Says:

Glad to see him go. Hopefully, he will go across the street and work at DC.

  37. Marc Says:

Good, I hope they stop with this Spidey and Wolverine in the Avengers nonsense.

  38. BibbinsMcgrgor Says:

Oh and I think Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning would fit the book nicely!!! But it will never happen….

  39. BibbinsMcgrgor Says:

AND NO MORE WOLVERINE OR LUKE CAGE OR SPIDER-MAN OR STORM IN MY AVENGERS PLEASE. THANK YOU.

  40. daru Says:

i have to wonder if this just isnt another stunt. instead of faking character deaths its announce a writer is leaving and then lets magically bring him back 11 months later. see he was gone for a long time! in “comic time”.

  41. lala Says:

No Bendis no me I bought it for Luke and Jessica

  42. Philip Says:

Thank God. I can finally add Avengers to my pull-list.

  43. Tom Says:

I would like to thank BMB for his years of entertaining stories. They may not be everyone’s favorite, but I have enjoyed them and he brought consistency to one of my favorite franchises. Look at DC-nu… how many titles have new writers within the first 7 issues… 7 YEARS of multiple titles and events… INCREDIBLE ACCOMPLISHMENT.

  44. Steve Maser Says:

No Fraction, please! If “Fear Itself” was a trial run for Avengers, we’d all be better off if it was cancelled.

My real problem with BMB’s run on Avengers is that — looking back at it from memory — it seems like the books just existed to fill the backstory for the “event” books. And that’s not a good memory. His Ultron story in Mighty Avengers is the only thing (off the top of my head) that didn’t seem to be tied to an event that was actually memorable.

BMB — please return to Powers. We miss that!

  45. P0 Says:

Rick Remender will write Avengers now and make the team Uncanny Frankenvengers.

  46. Martin Wherever Says:

All the above comments may or may not have relevance to this announcement, and for the vocal public, good on you. Speaking as a Bendis fan until of late, I’m not sure I even care about his “status update”, except for one area, and one only(excluding the positive elements that have been inserted into the storyline). I sure would like to read an Avengers storyline I CARED about and wasn’t guilty about owning for years after. For example, I’m not comfortable with explaining to my future generations how Norman Osborn became more than “the nutball, lawnmowed-head dad of Peter Parker’s buddy who did stuff and helped kill Gwen Stacy, whatever, et cetera-boorring” villian. *cough, 66.6% of Spider-Man’s villians, not including Kingpin would’ve been a better adversary; *2nd cough, Chameleon*
For example. (And no, its a point I have no interest in vesting towards any major shift in cultural opinion. Its a point, plain and simple.)

  47. j dinkhouse Says:

I love how, if you read these posts, it seems like the whole world has been not reading Avengers since he took over. The sales over the past 7 years paint a very different picture. More proof that the loudest people on these boards are the ones that fall into the minority.

That said, Fraction would kill (and anyone still hating on Fear Itself should read his wrap-up interview here on newsarama, puts the whole thing in a new perspective), Hickman would elevate the whole thing, but I have to say that I would love to see it fall into Remender’s hands. Uncanny X-Force is the best superhero team book published by the big two, and he could bring magic to the Avengers.

  48. P0 Says:

Writer who is a year older. The hint can’t be taken literally. But if so, guessing they probably release the news at San Diego Comic On in July, Rick Remender or Dan Slott.

  49. BibbinsMcgrgor Says:

I would absolutely love to see Remender on Avengers but he’s already writing two team books and Slott’s last avengers run was pretty shit. I just want to know when EXACTLY bendis is leaving. I hope its not too late in 2012 I can’t wait to start reading Avengers again!!!!

  50. nomorebendisonavengers Says:

Best news since 2004… Will try to make it a national holiday when he leaves…. What a relief. Will start with Avengers again as soon as he leaves.

  51. AvengersfreeofBendis Says:

Best news from Marvel in years. Bendis doesn’t know how to write a comic even if a good story bit him. Let’s hope he moves to DC or some other publisher. The first few new Avengers weren’t bad but with the introduction of the Sentry it went downhill real fast. Boring stories, Endless babble (lets give them the same speach patern the easist way) The most disappointing X-overs like Civil War, Secret Invasion were the Avengers did literaly did notihing than talk etc etc. The Limited series that flowed out of the main events were all better. Sorry to say but it was 8 years of cheap crap and all the crtics that hailed Bendis into heaven and people that gave him prices must have been blind or bought by Marvel there is no other explanation here.

Maybe the sales were great but that is all there is. Probably longstanding fans who wanted a complete collection who still bought the series, Spider-man and Wolverine fans obviously joined the club. Some new readers who didn’t care at all for the rich history of the Avengers and some Bendis fans who knew him from Daredevil and Spider-Man ultimate. Can’t imagine that, with the exception of Bendis fans, there were people actualy enjoying these books for the last 8 years.

  52. Dale Says:

Whoop! Best news ever. Bendis’ run has been the worst I’ve ever read on Avengers. Just the other day I was thinking about dropping all the Avengers titles after 25 years of collecting.

His dialogue is terrible, he doesn’t have a fresh idea in his head. he keeps using the same villain and don’t get me started on the “too many crossovers”

    So long Bendis
