In an interview with VH1, current Dr. Who, Matt Smith revealed he will be leaving the show after the 2012/2013 season. He mentions he wants to take a stab at Hollywood and give American cinemas a try.
Interestingly enough this would place the regeneration of the next Doctor right in the 50th anniversary season of 2013.
At the age of 26, Smith was the youngest Doctor to be casted, only 3 years shy of Peter Davidson when he was cast in 1981. When Smith began the role at of the previous season, he received a mixed reaction from fans, mostly because the previous actor, David Tennant was so well loved by audiences. However, with the BBC’s expansion to American television providers and not having to deal with an airing delay, Smith has gained quite a following and in some eyes, surpasses Tennant’s popularity.
While this is hardly set in stone, it does seem like Smith has already decided that he’ll be done playing Doctor after next season.
So Whovians, are you ready to see Matt off yet and to bigger things, or are you still wanting more?

Lan, this is some real rumor mongering. All he said was that he was committed to do that third season and he has an interest in doing some other acting. He hasn’t said that’ll be his last season, nor that he wouldn’t do some specials-as-a-season, a la Tennant. Real shitty journalism, bro.

I’ve read this quote elsewhere already, and I agree with Zach: this is really shitty rumor-mongering.
Will be done after 3 years? Perhaps; that’s actually the norm rather than the exception for many of those who have played the role.
But it seems like people want to interpret the world from what he said when nothing is guaranteed either way at this point.

He has a large amount of time between series. He needs to do something between the two. A lot of British actors do this. Hell the guy who plays Watson in Sherlock has time to do the Hobbit.

Smith is my first Doctor, meaning I haven’t had to go through “losing him” before. I hope this is just rumors, because I’m not looking forward to seeing him replaced.

We’re not going to know when Smith’s leaving before the BBC wants us to. This is simply the actor playing hypotheticals in an interview.
