New Man of Steel Set Pics Reveal Jor-El, Redheaded Lois

October 6th, 2011
Author Graeme McMillan

Pictures have leaked online of Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Superman’s father in Man of Steel, 2013′s movie revival of DC’s original superhero, and judging by the look of him, Krypton has become much more forgiving of shaggy hair since Richard Donner’s original movie:

Also interesting: Doesn’t it look as if he’s wearing Henry Cavill’s Superman outfit underneath that robe? Perhaps the new movie is hewing closely to the New 52 idea that the Superman costume is actually Kryptonian ceremonial armor…

And as if that wasn’t enough, other pictures from the set reveal another shocking change the movie is making from its comic roots: Amy Adams’ Lois Lane has red hair.

Backlash expected in 3… 2… 1…

  1. Lan Pitts Says:

    Don’t care.

Just as long as it’s a good movie.

  2. GT Says:

I think they meant to cast Rachel McAdams (with her hair done dark) but the offer went out and was agreed to by Amy Adams before they could do anything about it lol

That or maybe Snyder confused Lois Lane with Lana Lang, I hear Clark has done that a few times lol

  3. protomelvin Says:

I don’t mind that Lois is a red-head. Lana became half asian in Smallville so…not a big deal.

  4. Rod Lee Says:

Please just be a good movie. Watchmen was not a good movie.

  5. Jon B. Knutson Says:

Clearly, Warner Brothers decided to make a Superman movie that I would never want to see.

  6. Billy Lone Says:

Regardless of the hair color, Amy Adams looks more like Lana Lang than Lois Lane. I would have gone with Rachel McAdams.

  7. Dangersmith Says:

If fans have a fit over the change in Lois’s hair color, let me be the first to say they really need to get a friggin’ life (as well as update themselves on the fact that women color their hair all the damn time). Plus, Amy Adams is a solid actress, waaaay better than that boring Bosworth lady in ‘Superman Returns’.
There are a lot of interesting deviations developing with this project, and I’m actually more curious than anything else… expecting to be surprised.

  8. vetinari Says:

I gave up on DC producing “true to the source” movies quite some time ago and go into each thinking that they will be garbage unless they prove me wrong… so far, only Nolan’s Batman franchise has done just that in the last 20 – 30 years (let’s see, I’ve had to endure during that time: Catwoman, Jonah Hex, Green Lantern; Watchman; Superman Returns; Swamp Thing; Constantine; Batman Forever; Batman & Robin; am I missing anything else?)…

  9. mateo107 Says:

hmm so making a movie about internationally recognized icons that are hardly recognizable. a couple decent bad movies can’t make up for DC’s horrible track record, and this looks like more of the same.

    vetinari, you forgot Steel.

  10. Matthew Petersen Says:

    @verinari

I thought Green Lantern was pretty dang close to the source material (with the exception of Parallax, which did not bother me in the least). Watchmen was also pretty close, with scenes taken right out of the book (unless your one of those people who complain about the “space squid ending” being left out).
I’ll agree with the others listed.

Superman has me excited. Red hair does not bother me one dang bit.

  11. Johnny Says:

Red hair doesn’t bother me at all. Lois had blondish hair for 4 seasons on Smallville before they turned her brunette, it wasn’t a problem at all. Amy Adams is gorgeous and talented, she’s gonna do well. Hope the film delivers.

  12. monkey Says:

Lane’s hair and look has changed all the time. She has been everything but blond…wait wasn’t Durance sporting some light hair in Smallville for a while? Then some times comics actually rip off Wonder Woman’s looks , tall ebony haired and curvy for her. Seriously there is not one look for Lois. She can be stick thin and angular like Kidder, or glam like Hatcher.

She does not have an iconic look really.

  13. The Pit Says:

    Looks good so far.

  14. Fan-of-story-over-looks Says:

    OMG!!!!

How dare the folks who own the rights to a film their making create something that isn’t exactly like I want it to be!

How dare that Mr. Snyder fella not use his psychic abilities to read my mind to make everything look exactly like I want it to!

How dare they do something like slightly change a costume or hair colour without first consulting millions of fans for each and every one of their oppinions and a proper vote!

How dare they not follow everything that’s come before and decide to do something original (even though that is ironically what us complaining cry-babies, cried about when the last Superman film was released)!

How dare everybody for not thinking exactly like I do!!! For shame.

  15. inthemesh Says:

    who cares about the hair!

Jor El needs to lay off the taco’s

  16. Poly Says:

Dude! What’s the problem with the watchmen movie? it’s that Snyder left out the giant Vagina with tentacles?

Or Green lantern! If you read geoff Johns i don’t think you can complain about anything in that movie also!

Oh and V for vendetta it’s a great Movie.

And don’t come with “marvel respect the source material”

Kirsten Dunst as Mary jane “Fail”

    X-men 3? “Double fail”

    Spiderman 3? “Christ”

Al i’m sayng is, if you want the things as close as the original, read comics and don’t go tio the movies!

  17. fate Says:

quit comparing this to Smallville! that wasn’t comic accurate either. If Lois does’t have red hair then neither should the person playing them on the screen. Why make the movie if it will only be based loosely on the source. I want to see a Superman movie not a kinda like Superman movie.

  18. Dan Says:

I love Snyder. Watchmen was AWESOME, and anyone who says otherwise, never read the book. Sucker Punch was only okay.

I think Man of Steel looks like it’s going to be awful. I hope I’m wrong. Lois with red hair is dumb. Crowe is terrible casting. If you expect me to buy him as a scientist that thinks the world is going to end while no one else believes him, then you’re on crack.

Ironically, bringing back Brandon Routh would have been okay with me. He was great in Scotty Pilgrim.

  19. the 4th survivor Says:

I don’t care if she is bald as long as it’s a good movie

  20. turifa Says:

0 NOEZ SHE LOOKS LIKEZ STARFIREZ128!

  21. Julie Says:

Kool! Can’t wait to see it.

  22. Julie Says:

I love anything dealing with Superman

  23. Sanford S. Willams Says:

Amy Adams is a sweetheart…but she will SUCK as Lois Lane. Personally, Evangiline Lilly would have been a better choice as Lois.

  24. LOLing Says:

    @Poly

That’s the thing. Most people don’t read comics. So saying “Green Lantern is a much better movie if you read the source material” doesn’t help. Movies are aimed at broad audiences, not the small group of fans who read the comics.

  25. Hi Says:

I just hope that amy adams can play a strong willed Lois Lane Erica Durence from Smallville was perfect!

  26. Jarrod R. Gilbert Says:

All I can say is don’t knock it before you have seen it , I think it will be good, by the way Watchmen was great….

  27. Titans Tower Says:

Lois Lane red hair, so Lana lang in the next movie will be brunnett and Lex Luthor will have a full set of long hippie hair. So who care about the old fan…DC can get new fan just like the new DC 52 Universe.

  28. Poly Says:

    @LOLing

You’re right i expressed myself the wrong way.

What i mean is, i don’t understand Green Lantern Fans complaining about the movie, but giving High praises for the geoff Johns run (saying for a long time GL fan)

I think the movie is all right for most People (At least it’s what they say at my office)

  29. Ninjak Says:

I don’t care about Lois’ hair color so much, but it’s just another thing that has been changed from the comics for no apparent reason. For example, from what I’ve seen of the Superman suit, it looks weird. I can maybe understand them losing the red trunks, but it has no belt either. A full blue body suit with wrist gauntlets, no trunks and no belt is just straying too far from the source material IMO.

The major suit changes coupled with Lois being a red head and Perry White being a black guy makes it seem like the movie makers are purposely going out of their way to change things just for the sake of changing them. It seems that none of those decisions really make the movie better, it just makes it different from the comics and the other movies.

That makes me nervous. It tells me that they don’t really give a crap about Superman or the Superman fans. They just want to make the movie that they want to make, and they are going to cram Superman into it, and to hell with the character and his traditions.

I could be wrong, but as Han Solo said… “I’ve got a really bad feeling about this.”

  30. Nate H Says:

As long as Lois isn’t blond, it doesn’t really matter. Actually, Lois’ personality is more suited to a redhead anyway – firey, independent, outgoing, etc, etc. Sounds like a redhead to me. Besides, Amy Adams is a good actress. It will be a stretch for her, but I have faith (for now).

As for Russell Crowe…if you can’t buy him being a scientist, then watch A Beautiful Mind (one of the biggest Oscar snubs in recent history) and then get back to me.

None of the changes by themselves bother me at all. When you put them all together, though…it starts to get a little alarming. None of us reasonable, sane fans expect everything to be the same – we just want to recognize the material. All is not lost yet, though.

PS – If you were defending the Green Lantern movie, you need to do two things. Kick yourself in the face, and then check out this review of the film: http://www.toplessrobot.com/2011/06/topless_robot_presents_the_best_scenes_from_the_gr.php

  31. jr Says:

Is Russell Crowe in Superman or Lord of the Rings? I think he went to the wrong prop department.

  32. Zach Says:

I’m really hoping that the stuff that looks stupid (Jor-El as a fat bearded medieval wizard, ginger Lois) now will end up working as part of a good movie. Fingers crossed here, chums.

  33. Ian Says:

This seems like a really weird, arbitrary change. Not sure what the benefit here is. Hopefully there is a good reason for it (personality of the character, the actress felt better with her natural color) instead of someone along the chain of command (or an agent) thinking it would be better for her to keep her read hair.

  34. John Says:

Typical criticism from people who should watch the movie and not pre-judge. And didn’t of of “The Adventures of Superman” TV actress Noell Neill have red hair?

  35. Roy Says:

I’m with John. The complainers have to STFU and wait for the final product.

  36. Andre Says:

Huh, you know both Lois and Jor-El don’t look too bad.

  37. Stephen Bergstrom Says:

I’m bummed because they didn’t include the picture of Russell Crowe smoking. ‘Cause, you know, if I knew that my planet was about to blow up, I’d be chain smoking too.

  38. PJ DeCicco Says:

I have no problem with Lois being a red head…..for a pretty long time Lois WAS red head! You can check your mid 90s to early 2000s Superman comics. She only went back to black after the General died in Our Worlds At War.

And I think Jor-El looks pretty cool too!

  39. photonex68 Says:

Oh, look, more whining that a movie’s going to be a disaster because it doesn’t look just like the comics.

I did that when I was 10, and then I realized that comics are full of different takes on characters, some of which work (and stick), some of which don’t. It’s called “growing up.”
