Wally was a mechanic around #200 of the Waid/Johns run of Flash with no memory of his time as Flash. Very similar to what you described. I enjoyed that story and art.

I love your “FLASHBACK” name for a continuity resetting story. Very clever.

I am going to defend COIE. That was the story that started me reading comic books. I saw all these Charecters all together and I fell for all of them. I wanted to read about them in back issues.

Now, this “soft” reboot is not soft. Dido is horrible at PR but this whole thing was done to build sales. It makes sense from a financial standpoint. It hurt long time readers like myself who lost their Charecters histories but it gave us new stories. Are they all good stories….absolutely not. Can I complain, sure I can, the problem is complaining won’t help. In order to show DC that you are not satisfied stop reading what they publish. That will hit them in their wallet which force them to listen. I will read comics probably till the day I die but I will not spend money or time on stuff I don’t enjoy. If they write a good story I will read it, if they screw it up I won’t. Times are changing and either we can accept the change or stop giving them the money to do so.

@ Deviknyte, I totally agree! I said exactly the same thing at the time. I also said that if they tried to incorporate some elements of continuity, they wouldn’t have a clue what had or had not happened and it would be a total mess and so it proves.They are making it up as they go along. The real tragedy is, as a DC fan of 25 years, as distraught as I was with the reboot, I would have given it all a go, if it had been a fresh start. As it is, I will not touch this bastard abortion!

Why couldn’t they have just RESTARTED!? If they wanted to relaunch, then we shouldn’t be worrying about what stories count. NONE OF THEM SHOULD. How is it more expressible to new readers if “all” of Green Lantern and Batman still count, but none of Superman? Didio says that the past will come up when it needs to, but that still doesn’t remove that need to know what counts still. And he can’t pretend like the past just won’t come up.

It’s just a matter of time before DC reboots AGAIN in order to

* make Dick Grayson the one and only Robin
* make Young Justice and Teen Titans more like their cartoon versions (and maybe movie versions eventually)
* get rid of retro sci-fi elements like Martian Manhunter
* undo whatever 52 reboots turn out to be unpopular

This reboot seems to have been inspired by the latest Star Trek movie, BTW.

Actually. I’m wondering if anyone else has given this any thought. There is a reason Wally West hasn’t appeared in the new 52. Once the titles start to lose steam and one by one they are canceled ( my money is on Batwing or Hawk and Dove to fall first) Wally West will appear. He will be bewildered. He knows at one point, there was something about him that made him different. That somehow, he was important rather than just a short order cook in a central city diner. Somehow, the life he’s living isn’t right and he’s the only one who realizes it.
Gotham City will have fallen under a tyrannical rule of Wayne Enterprises. Metropolis has turned to it’s leading citizen Lex Luthor to finally bring in the Superman and Aquaman has become Earth’s champion! When sales of the new 52 finally level off and begin to slump, Wally West will step forward…or more accurately, step back. DC will bring back the status quo with a new mini series titled…wait for it…FLASHBACK!

There actually might be a “new” Crisis coming as some fans say. After all, I heard that in Flashpoint the DC, Vertigo, and Wildstorm worlds were separated to prevent them from fighting some great evil. I wonder what this evil could be though… Is it gonna be a villain DC has already created? Or is DC gonna create a new villain? It’s still too early to tell.

I quit comics a year becuase the direction in DC was not what I wanted. Came back with The NEW 52. I love it! Never heard of the word “canon”. Someone at a comic shop explained it to me. I have been collecting for 20 years never heard of it before, guess I am out of the loop. I bought COIE collectd slipcase for $100, dont care if its not part of DC anymore. Just give us some good story and art and I will be happy. Bruce Wayne is BATMAN not Dick. So stop trying to kill him. The New 52 is needed and I cant wait to see what happens. LONG LIVE HAL JORDEN. Stop being haters and enjoy it for what it is.

I am a little confused, what about Batman, Nightwing, Batman and Robin books. They may not have anything to do with Crisis, but these books all reference past events pre-52; Nightwing as Batman, Tim Drake as Red Robin, and Damian as Robin.

I thought the “New” 52 were going to be reboots, a retelling of each characters story, but instead a lot of the characters are continuing where they left off.

What this means is the DCnU is just that, new. It doesn’t mean anything was undone, it all is gone. Old fanboys vs. new is pointless. This is 1956 again people, it all starts new. To all who are too clever and jaded to enjoy it, step aside and complain amongst yourselves. I plan on enjoying some good comics while I can. I guess some people would even feel the need to critique a blow job. Honestly, if you can read Aquaman #1 and not be smiling maybe you need a new hobby?

I don’t care about what’s canon from 20, 30 years ago. Keep some, lose all of it…whatever. DC’s basic strategy here is correct: Telling good stories NOW, and the past continuity is largely irrelevant.

If they reference some semblance of the old stuff, fine. So bye bye Crises Infinite, Zero, Infinite Redux and Final. I don’t need to see those stories referenced ever again anyway – so no biggie.

Some advice to longtimers (such as myself, by the way): Let go of the OCD-ish requirement to expect the new stories to reference AND adhere to a “strict” continuity dating back decades. Not that that model ever really worked or made for better stories, but either way – it’s clearly over now.

Simply expect the new stories to make sense in the new paradigm. If the stories aren’t good, move on to something else. How hard is that?

So this is a modernized pre-Crisis universe/multiverse? But there’s still the 52 universes that came via Infinite Crisis?

As an old fanboy, I’d like to state for the record that I wasn’t even rooting for this.

I wonder if there’s a DCnU Secret Files and Origins in the future with a timeline like they used to do?

So if there’s no COIE, that gives further weight to the thought that the Mysterious Hooded Woman is a new Harbinger.

I wanna say that I hate DC too … ehmmm … no, actually I don’t, people take comics wayyyyyy to seriously, these are just stories, it’s not like they’re killing your mom and dad in front of your eyes ffs. This whole “I hate DiDio! I whish he would burn in hell!” and Johns or Morrison or Lee, is just too much, one dude saying: “what a way to piss off fans who bought the original COIE and toys”, I’m pretty goddamn sure that some dude in the 80′s wrote the exact same thing about DC pissing off the fans who bought their comicbooks and toys during the pre-COIE time, hopefully one day comic book fans will grow up so that way comics can go forward … because if you think that comics don’t go forward because of creators, you’re wrong, it’s because fans have been moaning about everything: “we hate Kyle! I grew up with Hal, bring back Hal!”, “You killed Superman, you will burn in hell!”, etc etc etc. it’s been you guys all-along.

I picked up Stormwatch. Some of the openning scenes, where it looks like they are tunneling through the “bleed”, i’m not a Storm Watch afficienado, precludes that this universe and its heroes can go pan-dimensional. With that, the possibility of running into another copy of the heroes or some negative universe is there.
Also, with the way some of these heroes are acting, you don;t need an “identity crisis”, since they have rougher edges already and would most likely take a villain out behind the barn and beat the snot out of them, period!!!

I was a long time Marvel Comics follower and stopped collecting a while back, except for Silver Surfer. I have always liked DC characters, but could not find a good jump on point and knew nothing about the continuity…too much. Now I am a DC fan and will be as long as they stay true to this reboot.

And this is why after 40 years of reading and collecting comics I punched out. I’m done. The very last book I will every buy is Flashpoint #5. Neither of the big companies really care any more. It’s just what can we do to have the next big thing and sell some books.

DC is excited about some of their books selling (to dealers) 100,000 copies. I remember when normal print runs printed in the indica where significantly higher then this. And the big deal comics like X-men #1 or Spider-man #1? Not even close to those.

Thanks for the memories DC and Marvel. I really enjoyed it while it lasted. Hopefully you will get your feet under you and figure out what you are really doing. Respect the fans. The new folks will be gone soon but the fans will be around for a long time.
