Hey D-Man..

Kinda missed my point, yo.

I, me, in my personal opinion, feel as though an opportunity to update/improve/tweek a character was missed here. I don't need to read older comics to see where a current one could use some improvement. Again, whats the point of a reboot if you leave most everything the same and don't take any risk?

And I dig Scott McDaniel, btw. He made that out of sight DD costume that almost everyone at my comic book shop hated, but I loved.

You make my point with Gambit, as he is a GREAT example of a character who could use some modernization. Notice that the movie Gambit and comic book Gambit shared very little in the way of costume?

Regarding dreads .. dunno, man. They seem more like a phase people go through. One they dont generally look back on with fondness. :)

I don't know Scott McDaniel from Adam, but his art got me into comics when I was a kid, and I love it to this day as an artist myself. He has great craftsmanship, style and storytelling skills.

What I've seen of Static Shock looks great, some of his best stuff in a while. Some of the scans I saw from Trinity looked like he was faking a few things--but that book didn't deserve his best anyway.

I'd be reading Static Shock if I weren't priced out.

Folks

Let's not put the hate on Scott. I've known Scott for almost 20 years now, and have watched his style grow during this time. You do have a right to opinions about his work, like it or not, but let's not be spiteful about it.

Scott has A very cool style, which sets him apart from all the other Jim Lee clones. That's the best thing that I love about comics and comic artists, is the difference in style. Static Shock has received many good reviews, and frankly for Scott's first go at co-writing, not bad overall.

Just give it a chance, I think Scott's is doing one hell of a job.

I think of all the Milestone characters, Static was the most MARKETABLE, but not one that would add where the DCnU is lacking. That would be Blood Syndicate. Still, I hope we see much more of Milestone to see some of the similar characters hang together (Xombi and Resurrection Man comparing nanite induced immortality; Icon and Superman sit down with Apollo and figure out who is the copy of who in the DCnU; Hardware and Steel working together with the Technocrat to make their suits able to joint together to make a giant African American Robot warrior,...good times, man, good times...)

Oh, I don't normally write in to complain about grammar mistakes and the like. But when the author is fundamentally changing what happened by poor word choice, it's worth noting.

Matt G Says:

"He probably left due to that costume. He is in a full bodysuit and needs a jacket?"

He had a jacket and a full body suit before. Read the original Milestone run. And so does Gambit of the X-Men.

"Also, maybe this is personal preference, but I think the dreads could go. They add to Static’s clunky and dated look."

Clunky and Dated? Dreads are still in style. It's not like he as an Afro or Jeri Curl.

I mean, this is a relaunch, right? Mix it up!

And Mike, don't drive yourself too crazy with the grammactical errors, verb confusion, etc. I read a review on this site where a guy wrote "To be honest" three times in one review. Was he being dishonest before?

This blog post needs a copy editor.

>First DC relaunch writer leaves title
Implies he was the first writer of the DC relaunch, either in hiring or publication. Should read:
"Rozum Becomes First DC Relaunch Writer to Leave" or somesuch

>DC announced he’d be getting a solo series with writer Felicia Henderson and McDaniel on art which instead turned into a one-shot in honor of McDuffie following his passing.

Implies the ongoing becoming a one-shot was related to McDuffie's death. Should read "DC announced he’d be getting a solo series with writer Felicia Henderson and McDaniel on art which instead turned into a one-shot that also honored McDuffie following his passing."

Ken,

Sigh. Well, we've lost the writer. So maybe you'll get your wish and the artist will go. I'm going to hang in there and see where this comic goes (for now).

Something similar happened, when George Perez relaunched Wonder Woman where Greg Potter left after the first issue. Gentleman George, I think, handled the title quite well and brought Wonder Woman back as a major character.

As usual, please put your money where you mouth is. If you like Static Shock, then buy the issues. If not, then why the sprock are you even commenting on this series?

@D-Man...

I gave up on McDaniel years ago. His art is terrible now. Like I said the last 5 years he's been a mess. I didn't buy this book because I knew McDaniel was on it. Same with the last 5 or 6 DC projects he's done. The only thing good about his art is that he can meet a deadline.

Okay, first off (Eric), Static Shock wasn't great, but it wasn't the worst book. I'm guessing more will be explained in issue #2. Give it a chance. Damn.

Second (Ken), I agree that maybe there was friction between McDaniels and John Rozum, but I wouldn't say McDaniel's art is that bad. Once again, give him a chance (on the art). Damn.
It's only the first issue people.

Yeah, my money is on McDaniel being the root of the problem. When you go from working with a class act like Frazier Irving to a full on hack like McDaniel, that has to affect you. Seriously, McDaniel's "art" in the last 5 years looks worse than vomit on a page.

I'll be the one to say it: I thought Static Shock No. 1 was one of the worst books of Week 1 of the New 52. It read like a physics textbook in parts. There was barely any introduction to the lead character. Villains everywhere, none of them memorable. To me it was the biggest example of why artists should not be given writing jobs unless they have the chops to do it. No idea how much of the blame falls on Rozum's shoulders, or how much falls on McDaniel's, but I really think that book crashed on landing.

I'd love to see XOMBI back. I loved the most recent series. I don't understand why they just didn't wait for the New 52 to re-launch XOMBI anyway. they delayed BATWOMAN and STATIC for it....

He never mentions McDaniel, so I'd say that's the likely source of tension.

I think it was just a mismatch. The first issue was just OK, and lacked the grace that a typical Rozum script has. He and McDaniel just might on different pages.

Here's hoping DC wises up and finds a way to bring back Xombi as a better vehicle for Rozum.
